In this episode, I show you step by step how I backup my images on a shoot and how I archive my image library. For my camera angle let me know if you prefer Option A or B?

I was nodding along thinking "cool, his system is a lot like mine" until you went downstairs to the whole different floor of employees and special storage lockers! LOL. I love your "pair and a spare" approach. I thought I had a pretty good system, but there are definitely things to improve. Thanks!

Great to see you’re not just some schmuck with a Leica and a funny hat. Your vids have been a pleasure to watch during the pandemic. Great to see the work flow, gear and insight of a professional. Very helpful in growing my own photography business. Cheers! 🍻

Option B! As a visual artist, a painter, I thought your studio, interior, set, etc rather special. Personally, I think it was because your set up is displayed in a clear range of values. I am not a ‘you-tuber’ or super savvy tech person. Thus, I found myself engaging on a purely visual level. While I listened intently, I drifted off to the window, the plants imagining the varied textures, etc…. I did not realize this until after I watched your entire video on “is the Leica worth it?” Next, I watched another video, on a similar topic, by another interesting person. I soon cut out of their discussion and returned to your video on archiving and back up. You posed the question and I thought ‘B’! It is rare to see a photographer with such a keen eye for tonal relationships. Bad color Blinds me! Although, your videos are not purely black and white….I am interested. The discussions are amazing for many reasons. Thank you!

I really appreciate that Tina, sometimes it gets discouraging doing so many videos not sure if anyone is listening but when people like you comment it gives me that extra motivation to create more and to improve my videos. Thanks for taking the time to stop and comment , Means a lot to me.

Hi there love the camera movement in your intro! Option B much more natural eye-line and maybe you could shift the white balance a bit to the warmer side or throw some back 3/4 light onto you from camera left at 4300K to add some warmer tones as it currently looks very cold? Just my 2 cents!

Hi Justin, Thank you - very thorough. I saved videos and photos on a hard drive. Less than two years later I was unable to access anything from the drive. The drive was not Sandisk. I have since learned that one has to regularly spin it (use it) regularly. Do you/your assistant regularly check on old hard drives to ensure they are still functional. I have since heard and read many stories of external hard drives failing. I'm considering the G drive SSD from Sandisk you recommended. I just want to hear your feedback. I am currently using Sandisk 124 GB cards. Thank you!

Drinking game: one shot (of whatever you want, can be juice) every time you hear the words « file » or « drive ». Hardcore version: Add « copy », « back-up », and « location ». Enjoy your day/evening 😉! (Thanks for the very informative video by the way!)

It looks like a lot of work but well worth the security and piece of mind. What “format” are you keeping your archive in? I’ve been struggling between deciding on mountable image backups vs. direct files and folders for archives.

One more question: you mentioned "formatting." Ddoes one have to do that. I normally just buy the card and stick it in my laptop and transfer files to it. Is there an advantage to formatting the card? Thank you.

Option B What capacity size are your external SSD's for field work? I'm currently using a pair of Sandisk 1TB SSD's with an M1 iPad Pro for field editing.

I'm intrigued by the new iPad Cliff, I kind of wish I didn't buy this 5K Macbook Pro a few years ago and just invested in a maxed-out iPad M1 and did all my main editing on my desktop iMac. I use two 2TB USB C G-Drive SSD on the road with me, happy w the size and speed.

Would you recommend shooting in RAW all the time as well? I was doing it for a while but storage got rather big and camera produces much better JPEG files than I can achieve myself so i stopped doing that.

I always shoot RAW Anthony, especially for all professional jobs. I just like having those files just in case.

@@AskMOTT Thank you for reply. Considering that after job is "done" you have no need for old photos anymore - is there a reason to keep all those hard drives comparing to having a NAS? Especially considering the ability to browse and search for particular photos. It's probably not all the time that you get 3Tb of data after a shoot (or maybe you do). Say if you have just 1TB of data - do you still dump it on 3TB drive and then put it in the "fridge" or do you wait for it to fill up? Or do you have something like "1 drive = 1 job" policy? Do you shoot only photos or do you do video work as well? How your workflow differs then? Video files (even from GoPro) can get huge rather fast.
@AskMOTT Жыл бұрын
@@pilkjaer We do video and photographer for our production business and yes the hard drives add up cost-wise, but that is all calculated into the cost of our jobs. We keep physical copies of all jobs in two locations for our own personal archive and while it's not part of our contract to keep a record for our clients we find they appreciate what we do when we bail them out. Lastly, we keep the deliverables for each jobs organized in the cloud.

Do you use any form of raid or nas also or do you just rely on paired drives one on site abs one offsite
@AskMOTT3 жыл бұрын
I have used RAIDS in the past but now we just have a few different businesses so we keep drives on site and off and then another copy of selects in the cloud.

@@AskMOTT thanks man that’s cool - I have like 15 years of files on so many hard drives - I have a drobo but I always feel it’s just as vulnerable as having paired copy of drives in different locations as I write this the drobo is flashing red - I’m just trying to get all my shiz together in our new home editing suite as well as at our studio space - how do you keep track of all the drives ?
@AskMOTT3 жыл бұрын
@@edbrownpersonal I'm lucky to have an office admin that does that all for me :). What we do is reference all the drives with job numbers. Each shoot has a job reference number and then we have a database of all the drives and what job numbers are on those specific drives, make sense?

I have been told to always go with sandisk cards. Sony just had a recall on some of their cards too, if I’m remembering correctly.
@AskMOTT3 жыл бұрын
TheSH1N1GAM1 bummer , I have a few Sony cards but I typically use Sandisk. I was considering trying out those prograde cards as their readers looks nice.
@TheSH1N1GAM13 жыл бұрын
Justin Mott I read good things about prograde cards. I got a set of their uhs-ii cards for my xpro-3 for about half the cost of equivalent sandisk cards (they were on sale on B&H at the time). I haven’t had any trouble with them. If I remember correctly prograde is made up of former sandisk and lexar engineers. It was after I got those cards I heard the advice about always using sandisk, but that was in direct comparison to Sony, and I’m not sure if prograde was taken into account, given the fact they’re a much smaller company.
