Recently, I found myself having trouble blending. Ironically, I realized something was wrong when I started having trouble with my Pat shades. I've always loved her formulas, so I knew something was off. I've had the same brushes for years, so I knew that wasn't the problem. Eventually, I went back to basics - grabbed my OG primer and remembered to use a transition shade or translucent powder for transition. That solved the problem and it made me think about how trends in beauty affect my technique. For example, I got excited about color - especially using those Anastasia pigment palettes. Applying a really colorful rainbow eye or cut crease calls for different techniques. I also realized I started using all these different bases and primers just because I wanted to try them, not really thinking about how each base/primer might affect the look I was trying to achieve. I like the Anastasia base also, but it has a lot of grip. It's designed for shadows to stick to it, not necessarily glide across it. Going back to basics really helped me. Here's hoping sharing this experience may be of use to someone else!

Today, for the very first time I used my Zoeva 227 brush to blend PMG and I tried to replicate the look that Mel did - and wow, oh, wow.. for the very first time I understood what PMG matte is really about and how beautiful it can look. RIP, Queen.

I’m a painter and I always say you can make mediocre paint work with good brushes, but it’s difficult to make top quality paint work with mediocre brushes. It also helps to know which brush works best for a particular technique and type of paint. Same applies to makeup.

When it comes to shimmers like Pat McGrath’s and Natasha Denona, I either just use my finger or one of those silicone applicators in harder times reach areas. This is so helpful - I’ve really been struggling to get my Divine Rose palette to pop. Everything comes out so muted. Hopefully these ideas will help.

THANK YOU for this tutorial!!! I’ve often struggled with PMG shadows looking patchy but this really helps me realize the tools and technique are key to a properly blended application! I’ve done a re-vamp of my brush collection as I realized a too-soft brush was doing me no favors. I have hooded eyes and definitely found that a smaller denser brush was the way for me to go.

AND right now if you choose to wait 10-12 weeks for brushes you buy with the gift card, they're doing BOGO. So I ended up with $300 in free brushes just by buying the bespoke set and then choosing to wait. It's an amazing deal!

Patricia Rodriguez I get where you are coming from but I don’t agree. It’s like saying ‘I paid lots for premium steak so I should be able to eat it with any knife’ as you try and make pieces with a butter knife. Well no, you do need the right tools to get things done properly. Also, with Pat you need slightly stiffer brushes (as demo-d fantastically above), so you can actually buy cheaper synthetic brushes and it works well. Like with a zoeva set you can get all of this done. And there comes a point where all makeup looks better with good brushes. After I bought a Natasha Denona set of brushes, I used them on my ABH powders and saw a difference immediately.

Mel this was one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen you or anybody else do for this subject. THIS is almost certainly WHY I don't think her shadows are that great. I rarely use dense brushes because they are not as kind to my more mature eyes and I could definitely see that the shadows performed very differently depending on which brushes you were using. I've not really had a problem with "patchiness" and her shadows so much as I just don't get the big ta do because they don't perform any better for me than say Sydney Grace shadows and they cost so much. IN FACT I just said this in a video I'm editing LOL Bravo! Love you Buttercup! xoxo

It's only the past 3 years that I've got back into make up. I'm 59 and used to use my fingers for EVERYTHING but I'm really enjoying the brush techniques now. I had no idea just how important it was to choose the correct brushes for the varied textures in palettes. I, obviously, need more brushes (I'm waiting for my Rephr set to arrive). This vid is extremely helpful to me Mel, thank you so much. Happy Thanksgiving ❣💞❣💞❣💞❣

Thank you so much for making this video. I just got my first PMG palette and I was wondering if anyone made a video like this. So glad I found your video. I’m saving this video and making notes. 😀. I am not a make up artist but just an enthusiast. I cannot wait to follow your topics and create looks with my Midnight Sun palette soon. 🙏

Mel, you’re a freaking psychic!!! I was on the Zoeva site buying brushes and I came to KZfaq looking for brush info. Then I decided to come looking directly in your channel, and this was the freshest video 😳 👌 Thank you!

What a very informative video! I actually wore a PMG palette on Thanksgiving and I was very unhappy with the way my eyeshadow look turned out. I was definitely using the wrong brush. I just ordered Sonia G brushes! Now I’m really excited about trying the look again! 😊 Thank you!

I'm glad you made this video. I bought Bronze Seduction off Mercari & was starting to think I got a fake. I actually found this video searching for fakes. I'll definitely try different brushes.

This was such a helpful video - I never realized just how big a difference brushes can make!! The side by side comparison was astounding to see. I was excited that Rephr was offering a buy one, get one sale this weekend on their brushes so hopefully this will help with some of my shadow application.
