I really love natural brushes, I began with Wayne Goss and now I have replaced almost all of my syntethic brushes. My favorite are Sonia G, Chikuhodo, Hakuhodo and Wayne Goss brushes because it's not just the hair, the uncut bristles of these brushes are so so soft that I don't find with cut bristles of other brushes.

Thanks for this video, Mel! It was so helpful! My husband bought me a set of Zoeva eye brushes for Christmas and I'm in love! I couldn't believe the difference between the BH Cosmetics and Morphe brushes I was using. I guess I just didn't realize how much the right brushes could perfect the look. (And I'm pretty sure Mother Pat was shivering everytime I dipped a Morphe brush into her palette 🤣) Plus they are so soft and don't feel scratchy on my eyelids. I'm adding all of these to my notes and will buy them up a little at a time. Side note, you're eye look today gives me life! I need a tutorial of that. 😊😘

Hi Mel & family, thank you for this video...I swear I could’ve bought the most expensive brush sets several times over & I still wouldn’t have spent as much money as I’ve wasted on the 100’s of junk brushes I’ve accumulated over the past few years!!! I’ll just pause & rewind so I can grab a pen & paper! Your makeup looks gorgeous as usual but I’m really loving your eye look & I’m so surprised to see it’s Linda Hallberg’s new dark matter palette...now I’m much more interested in it!

Thank you so much for doing this, Mel! So helpful and informative! I recently got me some Hakuhodo brushes and they are amazing! But I have the Wayne Goss eye set and several others in my wish list, as well as some Sonia Gs. I used to use mostly MAC when they were natural, but thanks to them ruining their line, I am discovering so many good brush brands! I was definetly missing out. I am also very intrigued about Royal and langnickel, they look very affordable! I could wash brush videos every day, so if you feel like doing part 2, that would be great. Love you!

Veronica, a lot of folks are pretty sure that Hakuhodo makes the WG brushes! If you compare the shapes and some of the specific marketing terms they're pretty near identical. But if you want to support Wayne too and fill out your collection of shapes/functions, go for it!

I use my Wayne Goss 06 squirrel hair brush for colour lay down, especially great for shimmer and glitter shades, love if for my Pat McGrath and Viseart shimmers and glitters. I wiggle and zigzag it into the shadow (like Sonia G said to do to use her builder brushes) to pick-up a lot of product, you have to do that otherwise it won’t pick up much product.

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Mel from the very first time I watched one of your videos is when you are applying your eyeshadows, you always, without fail, mention each brush you use. This video was very helpful in separating the different categories of brushes up to better understand which to get and why. I’ve gotten pretty indulgent this year in brushes and some of these beautiful handmade ones are truly collector items. The craftsmanship is beautiful .. I wash mine the same way and lay them on their sides as well, to dry. I really appreciate what I’ve learned from you❤️ You are a really great teacher.. this from someone who can have a real short attention span unless someone is presenting something in a very interesting way.

Great video, you can't say enough about the Makeup brushes and getting the best use out of them. In one video, You have given the most informative info and awesome tips for using various brushes and densities then anyone on you tube in my opinion. Its obvious you know your brushes and how to use them, plus I love that you touched on many brands and price ranges. PLEASE IT WOULD BE A DISSERVICE TO US TO BE THIS KNOWLEDGEABLE AND NOT SHARE THIS WEALTH OF INFORMATION. Goodness knows we want a 2nd video. This is SUCH an informative video! I knew there were differences between brushes but you did a great job breaking it down. This makes me wonder how many influencers know this about types of brushes working differently depending on the formula of an eyeshadow, which correlates to how they judge a shadow. i.e. subculture is a prime example. I know there was a big fuss made about people saying “you have to use a different technique” but maybe they were just using the wrong brush and didn’t even know it. There is a difference between knowing how to do makeup (on themselves and other people) and being a trained MUA.

Yes! Destroyed their entire line is correct (MAC 242). The new line looks like it’s just made by a different company (again heard at the Reddit rumor mill) and quite frankly made by a clown. The brushes are rubbing. I bought a 242s but haven’t even reached for it because the bristles aren’t cut evenly so it would not pack the product on precisely nor cut a crease to save its life. Ugh I’m just so pissed. Thanks for the info and would love a part two

That video is dated March 5, 2018, if anyone would like to hear more about that specific brand. You've worked magic on your eyes with that LH Deep palette, just beautiful! The Neutrogena orange original facial bar is what I use to clean my brushes and sponges and it works amazingly while also ensuring it gets out anything that would cause acne or breakouts. So for me personally the Neutrogena facial bar is the absolute best brush and sponge cleaner. It's on the more affordable side and it works great. Always hang brushes up bristles down until they completely dry to avoid mold getting into the barrel.

I love Japanese brushes, for me they are the best, I have so many and my love for them began reading the blog of Sonia G some years ago. I agree that is very difficult to choose between one brand or another as all are special for me and different. I seem to be brush obsessed, Mel! Another packing brush option is the Chikuhodo GSN 9. It’s at the same price point as Esum 21 but so much softer. I find Esum brushes work great, but they are a little too scratchy for me. Great video as always.

I bought some Royal and Langnickel omnia gold brushes after your recommendation. Cannot wait to try them out! I used to buy lots of squirrel eye brushes because people rave how soft they are but they don’t blend shadows as well as goat brushes. Now I only buy squirrel brushes for face. Thank you for this amazing video Mel 🥰. Also I know people already posted about it but just a reminder Hakuhodo is increasing their brushes price (mainly squirrels one) this February and I believe Chikuhodo is going to do it in June. So buy those brushes now!! 🤣🤣

Thank you so much Mel. Education is your forte for sure. I found this helpful. I had not realized until you showed on camera the eye brush differences with WG and SG. That is such a difference. I am always moving towards smaller eye brushes because I have smaller hooded eyes. Very very very helpful video. Because it seems like everyone wants a comparison maybe demo all WG brushes on one eye and on the other eye Sonja G doing the same look. IDK butmaybe that will help. Those brushes are always in your comments. Smooch Mel! ❤️

I am so glad you also are concerned about the Color Switch damaging the brushes in the long run. I will not dare use it on my natural brushes or high end brushes. I have tried it on a couple of inexpensive synthetics brushes but I still cringe...so safe to say I won't use it on any of my brushes. I just can't see why it wouldn't damage them, misshapen them with the hair breakage. It seems equal to using a cheap quality hair brush, or roughly brushing you head of hair, you see how easily that can damage your hair, so with that said it stands to reason a Color Switch will damage the hair on your Makeup brushes too.

I wash my brushes just like you. Dry them on my tub the same way also, but one trick I've learned is to roll a towel up (looks like a long, thin snake) and I prop the handles slightly so that the brushes are hanging over the lip of the tub to get air on both sides, BUT the brushes are pointed slightly downwards so any water droplets that remain will not run back downwards into the handle. :) ~Angie~

What types of brushes (in the case of synthetic v. Natural) should you use for what? Like for foundation, which type would give you the most flawless, yet natural (in know, contradiction we all strive for) finish? If I wanted a very pigmented eye look, what type of brush? And finally, if I wanted a very soft, diffused eye look, which type of brush? I started wondering all this because when I was hearing about the ND safari palette, a girl I watch said that the formula works better on synthetic brushes, that you won’t have a problem with blending if you use that type. It made me start to wonder if certain formulas work better with certain bristles? BTW! Your eyeshadow is stunning! It’s the balance we are all looking for (natural (well my version of natural because I’m a colorful shadow girl🤪) yet flawless) but that wing! Girrrllll that wing! It gives you such a sultry look but the shadow itself makes you look innocent! I’m living for it! It’s like your a mystery people need to figure out!......I just read way too much in to an eyeshadow look😂😂😂

Like I showed in the video, softer brushes are going to be more diffused while stiffer will be more color saturation. I love the artis brushes for foundation but i don’t like anything more than a damp sponge ❤️

Monolid/hoodie eye girl here ✋🏼 I live for Wayne Goss 6,18,20 :) partly because they are the perfect small size with still the right shape for overall blending; but also because of the softness! If you blend with scratchy brushes on eyelids that are already ‘squished up’ it can cause even the slightest irritation=swelling=worse eyeshadow look. Wayne Goss for the win! But I just have to try Sonia g so her pro set is on its way to me now 😂
