How I BUILT a DIY Subkick Mic Used by Foo Fighters and other 90's bands!

If you've ever wondered how to get the kick drum sound used on famous records from bands like foo fighters, nirvana, smashing pumpkins or any other famous rock bands especially from the 1990's, they're probably using a Subkick. In this video I show you how to build your own for very cheap. It will help you get the best kick drum sound in your own home recording studios, especially if you're chasing that drum sound of the 90's.

you should solder your ground lead from the XLR to the speaker basket. it would prevent unwanted hum and noise.

I actually couldn’t do this as the speaker basket has some kind of powder coating. Thinking about it now, maybe if I sand it back or something? What do you reckon?

Reversing polarity doesn't make speaker working like a microphone. It just changing phase of output signal. That what's making speaker working like a speaker it's because you giving electric energy to a speaker to transform it to air movement. In this case You making microphone from speaker because you giving acoustic energy to the membrane ... then speaker coil is generating electric energy like in dynamic microphones. But hey ... very interesting project!!! Keep it up

he was talking about phase but he just didn't phrase it right, if you apply positive voltage the speaker should move foward, but if youre using it as a microfone positive pressure would make the speaker go inward and thus starting the senoid negative first, inverting the polarity of the speaker would make positive pressure = positive voltage first. thats what he is talking about. it does make it "work like a microphone".

I wired up a speaker as a sub with a switch to reverse the polarity. I'm thinking of adding a ground lift switch with a 100ohm resistor

thats a great idea, you can also add a resister for a bad, or if you now how, add a cap in there too for a roll off. I'm thinking of doing that next.

I thought I would use a drum from a kids drum set to do this. Was looking at thrift stores.

This is an excellent idea. I was looking at the same but it was hard to find one cheap enough with the right dimensions that was usable.

It hurt me to see you putting your fingers so close to the chop saw, use a stick! Also, would a metal bucket work for a bit sturdier of a speaker cabinet? Would you need to seal the speaker with some silicone caulk or leave it open around the edges?

Haha, Yeah the camera makes it look way closer than it is but I’ll definitely take your advice. I’m definitely going to try sealing it off. I’m not sure about metal. It could work but may have some funny frequency issues. Worth a try though. Maybe you could try it and show the results. I have some more ideas to add to this prototype for sure.
