Can you build a subkick for cheap? Is it better than the Yamaha SKRM-100 Subkick? If you've ever wondered how to get the kick drum sound used on famous records from bands like foo fighters, nirvana, smashing pumpkins or any other famous rock bands especially from the 1990's, they're probably using a Subkick. In this video I show you how to build your own for very cheap. It will help you get the best kick drum sound in your own home recording studios, especially if you're chasing that drum sound of the 90's.

Definitely prefer the Yamaha tightness, I think the main difference is the mesh heads on the subkick. It Would be interesting to see how yours compares without the bucket or with a hole in the back

Yeah it’s definitely something I’m going to play around with. I was going to open it up on the back first build. But yeah I want to show the progress over a couple more vids.

I’m hearing more low end extension with the Yamaha subkick, but then again I’m using crappy Bluetooth headphones right now and they likely aren’t accurately reproducing below 80hz :) The DIY doesn’t sound bad either, and depending on the track it may work better for what the track needs. Solid recording for both regardless!

Yeah I think your headphones may not be letting you hear it accurately maybe. The diy has more mids too so without hearing the 50hz it has more of, it would appear that the Yamaha has more lows. Good picking it man. As long as you know 👍

Yeah man all the above. Anything you need extra weight and oomph in a kick. Eq and normal mics don’t do what a sub kick does. I wish I’d made one years ago 😂

Wouldn’t sone muffling help that boomy sound? That seems to me the only issue with the diy subkick. It sounds good tho for a fraction of the price.

I think its boominess is just that it's response is much lower. I am thinking of opening the back and baffling the side though to see if that makes a difference. I do actually prefer its main frequency being at 50Hz though for most of the work i do, as it suits that 90's kinda vibe.
