I don't know if there's a great solution there without additional gear. Typically, if you are compressing on the way in you'll be using the TRS inputs as you said. You're effectively bypassing the preamp in your interface in that setup, meaning you would plug your mic into an external preamp first to bring it up to line level, then into the compressor, then into the interface. If you didn't want to use the compressor, you could just use the external preamp and then right into the interface. I have another video explaining how patchbays work that actually uses that exact setup as an example that may be worth checking out.

The friend I share space with gona bring his clarret octopre soon that has dedicated insert ports so that will probably be the solution to my problem. But thanks for the answer. If I understand you correctly, you're looking to use the patchbay as your inputs to the mixer. I.E. plugging a microphone into channel 1 shows up on channel 1 of the mixer and so on. If that is the case, then yes it will work. That's how I have mine configured so I can plug in at the front of the rack rather than around back directly into the interface. The connections between the patchbay and mixer are essentially just extensions.
