How I Built My Rotational Golf Swing As A Disabled Golfer (And How You Can Too)

There's a lot of misconceptions about what it takes to build a rotational golf swing, and the most prevalent is that you have to be very athletic and mobile to be able to build a rotational golf swing like the top pros. In this video i discuss how i have personally managed to build a rotational golf swing, whist having a mobility reducing disability. In most cases, the quality of certain variables in your golf swing has far more of a say into whether you can rotate rather than your mobilty/athletic ability.

Well done for sharing the fact that you have CP, it will open people's eyes to the condition and hopefully inspire others to try their very best despite the various obstacles that life throws at us all. With regard to your videos, It's clear that you have really thought about how the golf swing works - you don't need to be flexible to hit good shots, the problem is that most of us don't really know what we've done right (or wrong) when we hit a good (or bad) shot because we never see ourselves swing. Perhaps video is the answer???

I've just came across this vid. I can relate to your disability because I to have slight Cerebral Palsy down the left side of my body. My rotation is very poor. I over swing a lot of my clubs. I do try and stop myself from swinging past my shoulder but I always do. Thanks for your inspiration....

I can relate to this. I was off 9 at age 65 but I noticed tightness in my left hip and knee which got worse and worse until I stopped all rotation. Limping very badly and bombarding myself with painkillers I kept playing with no rotation and a flippy swing and my handicap went to 15. It turned out my left hip was arthritic and so bad it was bone on bone. Luckily I got a total hip replacement on 5th March 2021. I got back playing comp golf after 10 weeks (I documented my recover on KZfaq) and now I am working on building my rotation back. Got back to 11.5 hcap. Studying your videos in great detail👍

From one disabled pro to another, hi! Congratulations for what you have achieved and the improvements you have made. I comment on any KZfaq channels as "Old Pro Golf". I am now 70, retired and currently unable to play golf. 67 years ago I had polio which weakened my right leg. After some surgery I was able to forget about polio, took up golf at 17 and had a largely unsuccessful career as a club pro and later building golf courses. I played badly and fought a slice all this time until I stopped playing at about 40, retiring from the PGA at 50. 2 years ago I started studying the golf swing and its development over the years. Modern videos, including all the old guys, enabled this and I also started playing a bit and analysing my own pathetic efforts to understand why I had always swung over the top in my youth. I found 27 reasons, set about changing my swing and was starting to play better, probably about an 8 handicap despite my worsening legs and little separation, shoulders to hips, like you. My last 9 holes (my limit, even with a buggy) was 34 on a short par 36 course. Then Covid came and a new illness, post polio syndrome, I may not play again. *!&!. My new swing, before I had to stop, was similar to yours though shorter as I have to brace the right leg. Flat, right arm close to the side, rotate the left forearm quickly on the bs (this was the key for me) to get the club laid off, rotate and release. I can not rotate fully on the follow through though I was hoping to work on it. Max carry was about 185 yards though I think I could get to 200 if I could work on it now. Another golfer who struggles and would benefit from a flatter, shorter swing is Jack Nicklaus at 80, still trying to swing upright with no shoulder turn. Can't be done. Incidentally, Jack also had polio though it did not affect him at the time. Other restricted backswings that you may learn from are Doug Sanders and Alan Doyle. Also Lee Trevino in later years. Good Luck, let me know if you need any help with your swing, I am interested in adapting the swing to suit disabilities which even most "able" golfers also have!

It used to be part of the standard swing to lift the front heel off the ground in order to make a fuller turn. Jack Nicholas did this- most of the players did back in that era and before.

@@jchowngolf I have one question, with the drill where you place the stick under your right armpit and keep your left arm touching it prior to impact in the downswing I noticed you hit a full shot in one of your videos and the stick remained under your armpit. When I do it the stick flys forward after impact. Wasn’t sure if this was a big issue or if the drill should just be used to keep the downswing element. Any help would be great.

Good explanation. I find I get much better rotation initiating the take away with a feeling of my right arm pulling my left arm down and away from the ball. It auto loads my right leg and creates a huge arc ( for a 54yo).

Another very encouraging video , the drill sounds very helpful can’t wait to start practicing it & get the depth I need, I guess am confused with rotating your chest and keeping your shoulder well on plane vs. having that twist of your hips around to help rotating. I like the two examples before and after very interesting and really can relate to it

Thank you for the video, very much appreciate your way of helping! Question: Is it possible to over rotate in the back swing, getting the hands too deep? I'm 60 years old, with pretty good mobility, but definitely not DJ by any means. I do recall an instructor telling me that you don't want your hands to get stuck too deep. Of course, I may have misinterpreted what he was saying. Thanks again.

Great video! It connected a few more dots for me. Am I correct that I should not feel much if any torque in my body until my hands get around right hip?? I truly feel that this is where I get inconsistent. I.e. I start turning my lower body early in order to feel some torque feel. My guess is that this results in an inside swing and weaker because my upper and lower are more in sync in the back swing

Really great video on a rotational golf swing! I’ve been working toward that type of swing lately and I see the benefits. I’m sorry to hear about your illness, I enjoy your instruction and have great respect for your work ethic and attitude! I know comments and people can be harsh to downright nasty on KZfaq and I may get some hate for this but like you give out good and solid instruction on all aspects of the golf swing I want to share a truth that I have personally experienced over many years now, and that’s Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, died on a cross for everyone’s sins and that if we repent for our sins and submit our life to Him we are forgiven and will go to Heaven when we die. I’ve seen the meanest people you can imagine become the dearest people after He changes their life. I hope you are are already a born again Christian but if not check into it for yourself. God bless you and yours and thank you for being a caring instructor! I will be praying for you

Nice video. I'm enjoying the lessons. So how long or how many reps with the hands farther back in your back swing did it take to change from the older swing. As much as I try I still come over the top a bit. I don't think I have the rotation piece down yet. Maybe I'm not dropping my hands down enough and if I do without rotation it's seems is not good. Thanks for the video.
