Hi guys!
I have had a request to show my process of colouring a background using Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils. So here it is! I love using the watercolour pencils for backgrounds and my process for using them is easy! Although it would take a bit longer to complete your background compared to using other materials like distress inks, soft pastels, watercolour paints etc.
But I hope you still find this video interesting! Until next time.
Happy colouring…

Absolutely beautiful, Shelley!❤️ Thank you for sharing!🤗 I'm still learning backgrounds, so my go to, at the moment, are gel crayons (mainly dry) and distressed inks, or soft pastels. I'm really tempted to get the Albrecht Durers, despite having a full set of Polychromos and some watercolour paints. I have recently got a 40 set of Neocolour II though, which I am still learning to use.😅

I started very recently to colour 5 months ago and i have 12 Faber Castell water coloured pencils. I started trying using them on a scketchbook so i'm looking for any tutorial, suggestion , tip or trick to learn. This video is very clear and helpfull although as a first and messy and CLUMSY hobbyst colourist i prefer brushes over waterbrushes= it seems to me to have more control over the quantity of water applied on the paper. And , most importantly, as a fellow right handed, i start EVERYTHING from the top left corner down , then proceed slowly to the right to avoid any smudges or dragging water and color with my arm and hand over the page. And if i accidentaly start on the right side i simply flip the book upside down. And use parchment paper or a clear tissue under my arm as i tend to rest my arm over the page. Cheers from Italy. Dan

My pleasure! I like using my brush dipped in water as I have more control over it....but I used to use the water brush before. This waterbrush is blocked as it is really really old, so no water gets released from it - I had snipped the edge so it was a flatbrush so I still like using it. I use the smallest size. Sorry for the confusion 🤗💗

Do I always have to start with the background or can I colour the main element first and then do the background?
@shelscolouringjourney
@shelscolouringjourney Жыл бұрын
You can colour the main element first if you wish before the background. It is personal preference......I think I am used to doing my backgrounds first and I like it that way. But also, I use watercolour pencils for my main elements, so if I am doing to do the background with a water medium, then it could get messy if I did it last - that is another reason I tend to do my backgrounds first. Hope this helps 🤗💗

Beautiful!! What sharpener do you use with these pencils?
@shelscolouringjourney
@shelscolouringjourney 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 🤗💗 They are wider pencils so standard sharpeners don't always work - but for me, the Dahle 133 works and when he pencils become too short fo that sharpener, then I use a small silver KUM sharpener.

Thanks for sharing another great process video. This is probably a stupid question. Is there an significant difference between putting the pencil down on paper vs picking it up off the palette with your water brush? Do you lay it down on paper for the first layer to take advantage of layering?
@shelscolouringjourney
@shelscolouringjourney 2 жыл бұрын
My pleasure and it is not a stupid question at all!! 🤗💗 There are a couple of reasons I lay down the pencils directly to the paper:1.Yes, to take advantage of layering - I find it easier to put down layers as if I was colouring to get the depth I want, also I don't have to wait for each layer to dry before putting down the next layer, so it would take less time applying direct to the paper and then activating. 2.If were to apply with a water brush from the start, it would take a longer time as I would have to keep scribbling on the palette and applying, it would use up more pencil (palette is rough) and would again take longer as you will need to keep topping up colour on the palette to get enough coverage of the paper. 3. I think it makes it easier to get a vibrant effect - as once you activate the pencils, wait for it to dry and then go over with the 2nd layer using the water brush, you get very bright results with just that second layer. I don't know if that made any sense, but I hope it did 😂💗
@towalmoore
@towalmoore 2 жыл бұрын
@@shelscolouringjourney Thank you for explaining. That makes sense. I ended up doing the background on the Rita Berman page I was working on using the albrecht durer activated. The image was done with them dry. I haven't posted it on Instagram yet but I will tag you when I do. It turned out ok for the little bit of background thete is I think.

Hello! Yes it will definitely work….if you have used pencils that are not water soluble then you are a good to go. If you have used watersoluble pencils for the pain illustration, you can still do this, just be careful not to get water on your pencil work which will smudge the pencils out of the lines. Hope this helps 🤗💗
