I've had the same issues. What helped me was #1. Eating a diet to maintain my glucose levels throughout the night. Waking up at 3am and being wide awake is an adrenaline surge and caused by a drop in your blood sugar level. If you happen to wake up at 3 am and you’re wide awake, eat a small snack that includes a carb, fat and protein. #2. Taking melatonin, CBD, magnesium glycinate and L-Theanine 30 minutes before bedtime. #3. Stop saying or telling yourself that you wake up at 3 to 5 am every day. When you say that, even mentally, guess what? You will always wake up at that time. #4 Get fresh air, sunshine and exercise daily as well. #5. Vagus nerve stimulation. That controls the whole enchilada. It regulates your Parasympathetic Nervous Systems and affects sleep and wakefulness. #6. Address stress factors in your life. Relationships, financial obligations, emotional issues, work/travel, etc. Note: to negate the effects of the caffeine from your morning coffee, take an L-Theanine capsule with your coffee. Good luck with your zzz's.

Thanks so much for all the tips, many of them I have definitely tried like maintaining my glucose levels and having a snack before bed but no luck. I started a new magnesium drink that contains LTheanine and have noticed I get a really deep sleep with it. I will have to look up the Vagus nerve thing, never heard of it but makes sense. I am a very sensitive person and get stressed/anxious easily so I think that will always be an issue. Thank you again for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it!

@@justinelouise5534 Also if you have a Leaky Gut, that would affect your sleep. Going a a diet to repair a leaky gut would also help. Having a compromised gut will affect the production of neurotransmitters, some of which are melatonin, serotonin and GABA. All of which affect sleep. What has helped my gut is avoiding gluten, supplementing with L-Glutamine and the most important supplement is taking Colostrum. I take Sovereign Laboratories brand. I noticed a change in mood and sleep within a few weeks. Good luck to you.

@@eddie195777 Thank you so much for all the helpful information. i think you are right about the leaky gut (several other commenters suggested the same) and yes I definitely have gut issues. Coincidentally I recently started taking a B Complex and have been taking glutamine daily for the last 6 years but will definitely look into some of your other suggestions. Since posting this video I have gone from taking 2 sleeping pills a night to now 1/2 a pill. Last night out of curiosity I tried taking half of a half and boom 3am I was awake so I obviously have more work to do. Thank you again for all your suggestions!!!

Don’t ever apologize for taking any sort of sleep aid. Like you I have suffered for years from insomnia where I wake up at 2 or 3 and can’t go back to sleep. My doctor gave me Ambien and I take it with no shame. It works. I don’t have the crazy side effects, and I take it no more than once a week and have no addiction issues. It gives me a nice, deep, dreamy sleep. You do what works for you. People who have never had chronic insomnia are in no position to judge.

Oh no, i feel your pain! I am so glad you are going to try some of my suggestions and I hope they work for you. Yes the ring is gorgeous and that is exactly what it reminded me of too when I first saw it. Mine isn't sapphire though, it is tanzanite and unfortunately a much softer stone so gets scratched very easily. I don't wear it as often anymore for that reason but is definitely one of my most treasured pieces of jewellery ❤️

Thanks! I have ignored so many videos on KZfaq about insomnia and I feel blessed that I finally watched one that gave me awesome advice. I have had insomnia for so long that I don’t remember the last time I was able to sleep. I take a prescription sleeping pill as well as three capsules that are supposed to help me stay asleep and I sleep 3-4 hours every night. If I’m lucky I go to sleep at 8:30pm. Every single night I wake up at somewhere between midnight and 12:30am. I’m so excited that I opened your video! I recently bought several bottles of Oil of Valarian Root just to give it a try and I just received it today! It is 8:34pm and I am going to go open one of those bottles and put some on my wrists. I will let you know if it works! Thank you so much!😊

@@gailbrack940 When I first started taking the Kirkland pills I was taking TWO a night but slowly weened myself down to 1/4 of a tablet a night. Eventually I decided to stop taking them all together only because I have heard they are not good to take long term so now i only take one from time to time if I have had a few nights in a row of rough sleep and/or need to get a full night's sleep. Good luck!!!!

Oh no, sorry to hear that, waking up in the wee hours is rough! I had great success with the Kirkland Sleep Aid but have made the decision not to take it anymore. I just don't think taking a nightly sleeping pill forever more is sustainable but sadly I am back to waking up in the night but lately has been around 5am which isn't ideal but better than 3am. Yes I have taken Super sleep on it's own but for me it only helps me fall asleep, not stay asleep which is my biggest problem. Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you!

What I mainly liked about this video is how the author appreciates how big a struggle insomnia can be. I know how miserable it is to be awake in the night feeling that there's nowhere to go and nothing to do that helps. I may try Benadryl, but it's not recommended to take for more than two weeks. I believe the main thing is to identify the lifestyle issues that cause or worsen insomnia and try to correct them.

Thank you for your comment, yes it sure is awful waking up in the middle of the night. Unfortunately I am still struggling with it today. Oh no sorry to hear about your insomnia troubles, it is no fun! I have had it for about 10 years now and unfortunately still struggling with it. When I made this video I had started taking Kirkland Sleep Aid and having lots of success and managed to get down to taking 1/4 pill a night but that isn't really something I wanted to do for the rest of my life plus they aren't available in Canada so had to find them in the US. At Christmas I decided to stop taking them all together and got the dreaded 3-5am wakeups again and still having it BUT i have noticed when I take a supplement called GABA (get it from the health food store) I am sleeping much longer, sometimes a whopping 5:30am haha which in comparison to 3:30 is a miracle. I wish I could say I had this beat but I don't, I still struggle but have found ways to make it a bit better. Good luck to you!!!

Hi, I like strong tea, but now to make it taste stronger without so much caffeine, I add a Tetley’s decaf tea bag to one regular bag. Most decaf tea has no flavour but the Tetley’s does. I hope this does not mean it is not so decaf. Others in my family just drink the decaf Tetley’s, because as I said, it tastes pretty good. I may experiment tomorrow to see if I can do double decaf and still get a pretty reasonably strong cup of tea. I also went half decaf with coffee and worked my way down to decaf. I like Folger’s decaf and McCafe decaf.

Your recommendation reminded me that a few years back I had allergies and spend a year taking medication for them. The meds helped me sleep longer but not better. After I went off the meds I thought my body would be trained to sleep longer but my sleep time decreased after I stopped the meds. I understand that it's better to sleep than not to and I my try an allergy pill at some point but I'm going to keep looking for a more definite cure.

It’s important to not look at the clock when you wake up in the night. If it’s still dark out there’s no reason to look at the clock. It serves no purpose and is self defeating to identify the precise hour that you wake up in the night.

I tried soooooo many things. Evrything ..I was losing it This was the last In a line if 1000 of videos . I also tried the sleep hygiene suggested, every kind . Benadryl melatonin valerian ( which really helps w daytime anxiety I've been taking it for yrs ) Cant drink chamomile ,allergic Anyway bottomline, Keeping electronics out of bedroom Adjusting diet helped a bit BUT Last week I saw this video I was so down and exhausted I asked my brother to go pick up Costco sleep kit He was unsuccessful in procuring it . I looked up ingredients Had him go get unisom ( same antihistamine in Kirkland ) and the same type of magnesium in the Kirkland ( I too did the bolt upright night time thing. So agonizing!) I've slept 3 nights now in a row !! THANK YOU!! Thank you !! Im going to get the wrist lavender thing too :) . I dont drink caffeine , adverse effects.. I think we may have high histamine constitutions. Hence the anti-histamines working well Sidenote : kirkland is not truly " sleeping pill" its just antihistamine w mag . * another sidenote: kombuccha is caffeinated as well, many ppl dont realize.

You saved me on the costco sleep aid. I had been sleeping poorly for over a month from a painful breakup. Had tried marijuana gummies, Mg, melatonin and zzzquil with moderate results but none would work on the second night. Last night i took 25mg Doxylamine succinate, the walgreens knock off version, 30 minutes befroe bed and another 25 before going to sleep. I did wake up at the 4 hour mark to pee but was able to fall back asleep. My tracker gave me a score of 80 including over an hour of deep sleep. I was extremely sleep deprived after weeks of nights where my app wouldn't give me a score because it never detected any sleep. 1 to 3 hours had been the norm. Thanks for the tip

Hi Justine. Just wanted to thank you for your video. I had been suffering over a month with waking up way too early. I believe this insomnia is due to my diagnosed depression. I was getting only 4-5 hours of sleep each night and suffering for it. I was getting desperate to find help. I found doxylamine succinate 25 mg tabs at Walmart. This is the same ingredient contained in the Kirkland Sleep Aid. I took it last night with my regular night time antidepressant and I woke this morning after a solid 7 hours sleep! Thats the best I have slept in many weeks! I never got that result after taking diphenhydramine. I think I had grown tolerant to that medicine. I will take the doxylamine nightly for awhile. Then I will try to take a lower dose to see if I can wean myself off of it, as you said you are doing.

I am so glad you found them helpful! When I first started I was taking 2 tablets a night and weaned myself down to 1/4 of 1 tablet. I then decided at Christmas to go off them completely (have been taking them nightly for several years!) but unfortunately I am back to the early wake-ups again. i am trying lots of different combos of supplements but still have not found anything as effective as the Costco sleep aids, they are really good and work for me but just don't think they are something that can be taken indefinitely unfortunately. I am so glad you got a good night's sleep!

@@justinelouise5534 Hi Justine. I just wanted to give you an update on my sleeping and mental health. I no longer need to take the Sleep Aid every night. I now only take it occasionally. And usually I cut the pills in half. I am continuing to take a low-dose of melatonin along with my prescribed antidepressant. The antidepressant is mirtazapine 15 mg. I sleep approximately eight hours every night. I only occasionally awaken during the night. That is usually to go to the bathroom. But I always go back to bed and continue to sleep until the morning. I no longer have the problem of early awakening between 3 and 5 AM. I know that you can appreciate how great I feel because of this added sleep. Only someone who has suffered from insomnia, as you have, would really understand. You may wonder what I attribute my success to. First of all, I used a sleep hygiene application on my iPad that is recommended by the Veterans Administration. This application monitored my sleep patterns using data entered by me on a daily basis. I found the application on the Apple store. It is available to anyone and gave me feedback on behavioral modification to promote good sleep habits. I no longer use this application because my sleeping has improved tremendously. Most of all, I attribute my improved sleep to two other behavioral changes in my life. First, I have been abstinent from all alcohol in the past three months. Secondly. I have been attending Alcoholics Anonymous on a regular basis. Thirdly, I have been spending an average of 12 hours every week at a food bank helping distribute food to the hungry and poor in my area. I’m guessing that my insomnia was caused by both the alcohol abuse and a spiritual malady. I really feel that the solution to my insomnia was not pharmaceutical but spiritual.

Hi there! I am so glad you are now sleeping again! One sentence you said make me think, it was about waking up and thinking about a task to do in the morning. This could be a mind that can never rest, and with hypnosis you could regress to the cause, reframe it and enjoy sleep. Another thing that really helps to quiet a chatty mind is to listen to someone else talking. It could be a hypnotic recording set to relax, or a meditation, or the sound of the ocean. A background noise covers up internal noise and always works if I wake up and start thinking! And you are correct, all caffeine interferes with the Arcadian cycle. Have a great day and thanks for your video!

@@justinelouise5534 from what I hear, CBT is very good for it. A doctor who has worked with insomnia for 30+ years says in this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLtmebuI3LK3Xas.html) that when insomnia lasts for months on end, normal methods and routines don't work, but CBT works as well as medication (however, he specifies that when one stops medication, he is back to stage one and can't sleep, but after 6 sessions of CBT, when he stops, he still sleeps well! So I think it's worth trying that. I am a hypnotherapist and I totally believe that our busy mind holds the reason why we can't sleep well. I love the definition of insomnia the doctor gave. It's not a one off event, it must be every day for more than 3 months. And interestingly, he added that if we don't sleep much but wake up refreshed, it's not insomnia. It's when one feels groggy and tired that he calls is insomnia. Very eye opening for me! Hope you don't mind this long post...many of my loved ones have the issues. Good luck!

When I commented before, I was planning on trying Root of Valerian on my wrist every night. Well, I went farther than that! I bought an essential oil diffuser and I planned to use it every night. Well the first morning I had it (it was delivered about 6.30 in the morning)) I just laid down in bed because, as usual, I was exhausted because I only slept about four hours or less each night and many nights getting no sleep at all. I had put a few drops of the oil into the diffuser but I didn’t plug it in and it was just sitting on my nightstand and I went to sleep for three hours! Boy, was I a believer! The next two nights I plugged the diffuser in and looked forward to sleeping for a full night hopefully! However; even though I had taken my sleeping pill as I do every night, I did not go to sleep until four o’clock in the morning for two nights in a row. I was frantic because I do count on my sleeping pill for some sleep most nights, I was not affected by the sleeping pill for two nights and only slept about one hour those two nights. As a result of this, I gave the oil and the diffuser away the third day. After a few more nights my sleeping pill started to work last night and I slept 3 hours. I will have to deal with nights with little or no sleep, but I can’t deal with the diffuser making my sleep patterns worse. I’m so very happy that the oil and the sleep aid works for you!

Been beating myself up about taking antihistamines to sleep and not taking them , hence why I am awake. Going to start again, like you I had the ok to do this from my Dr but decided I should not take them any more stupid idea . Reading all the comments I know I am not alone with all this xx

I was quite shocked to hear how many people wrote to say they suffer from the same thing too. i know my Dad has suffered with it most of his life too. I recently started drinking a magnesium drink and find it really gives me a deep sleep and am now only taking 1/4 of a sleep tab so I am pretty happy about that. Good luck with your sleep journey!

Thank you for making this. I 100% think this is an adrenal issue. I have a congenital adrenal insufficiency and I am trying to conceive so my doctor put me on hydrocortisone (steroids) to regulate my hormones. Every night since starting the steroids (four months now) I wake up exactly as you say complete alert anywhere from 1:30 to 3:30. Sometimes I can go back to sleep, sometimes I can’t. I did a search on KZfaq this morning since today marks the sixth day in a row that I have been up since 1:30, and I’m trying to function on about an hour and a half of sleep...unsuccessfully lol. I feel like I have the flu lol. I believe that during hormonal shifts or times of stress the natural rhythm of cortisol levels of the body get interrupted, which is why this only happens to me when I’m on steroids. Going to read up on that Kirkland sleep aid to see if it’s safe when trying to conceive!! Thank you!!
@justinelouise5534
@justinelouise5534 4 жыл бұрын
I think you are right too! It is definitely a cortisol thing because I get a huge adrenaline rush which wakes me up and I am WIDE awake. My Dad has the same problem that he has had his whole life too. I did take an adrenal supplement with some success but then I still kept waking up, the only thing that has worked is my Sleep Aid and also works for my Dad. It is the same ingredient as Unisom. I am crossing my fingers it works for you and you are able to take it while trying to conceive/while pregnant. On a side note, i recently started 'seed cycling' to regulate my hormones (more of a peri menepausal thing) and finding a lot of success. Also I believe yoga also helps with hormones. Might be an idea, anything helps right and at least it is all natural. Good luck xoxo

I’ve been taking the Kirkland sleep aid for years. Unfortunately I still wake up every hour! I’ve had this type of insomnia from I was a child (childhood trauma). My GP has never and won’t address the subject, hence I can’t get help. I know it is causing health issues but don’t what else to do! I live in Scotland so there are no sleep clinics. I’m at the end of my tether as it’s been going on for 60+ years! Kirkland sleep aid is Doxylamine Succinate 25mg which IS an antihistamine!

Oh no sorry to hear about all your sleep troubles, I hear you! My Dad has also suffered most of his life too and at this stage has just accepted it because he doesn't want to be taking any pills now. He is now retired and says if he wakes up at 2am he just gets up and then tries to have a nap during the day but it is really awful and I know he struggles with it. I am the same and because I am no longer taking the sleep aid I am back to waking up in the night again too. As well as the sleep aid worked I just didn't think it was something I could take for the rest of time so stopped taking it in Dec 2021. I hope you find some relief!

I had never had a sleep problem before either and suspect perimenopause too - sigh. I worry about addiction too but after speaking to my doctor we both agreed that my lack of sleep was much worse. She said the sleeping pills that I use are a from of benedryl (allergy med) so felt they were safe for daily use but I totally understand your worry! I buy my chewables from Costco store and online but they are Webber brand which I think are carried at most drugstores and grocery stores. They are amazing for those nights when you just can't fall asleep, I am asleep within 15 minutes. Good luck!!!!

This happens to me whenever I have to go to work the next day. I take an over the counter sleeping aid every night to get a sleepy feeling and it works well for falling asleep, unfortunately it doesn‘t last long during the night. Most of the time I wake up between 3 and 4, on very bad nights even earlier. Then the sleepy feeling won’t come back andI lie awake until I have to get up at 6 am. The exhaustion during the day is very depressing. During my holidays I sometimes am able to sleep until 7 am, but not on a regular basis. I have the feeling it is very much connected with work anxiety, at least in my case. night.

This sounds all too familiar to me too, it is awful waking up in the night. If I sleep until after 4am I am happy but it is when I wake up earlier than that it ruins my entire day. The sleeping pills I was taking definitely work but they are not a long term solution so only take them if I need to get a good night's sleep. Good luck with your journey!

Hi Justine, I have the same struggle just like you and the blue pill has been my only working solution. You mention you have been taking for 2 years. Are you still taking it and is the pill effective for you at the 25mg dose. I could not find any information on effectiveness in the long term. Wondering if one can develop a tolerance that would requre higher dose or switch to someting else.

I posted this video several years ago and actually managed to ween myself down to 1/4 of a pill a night after originally starting with 2 pills a night. However even taking 1/4 of a pill every night I didn't think was a sustainable long term solution so stopped taking them all together. Unfortunately I am back to my middle of the night wake ups (lately been 3am) but if I need a really good night's sleep I will take half a pill. I wish I had a better solution but unfortunately my sleep issues continue. I wish you luck with your journey!

@justinelouise5534
@justinelouise5534 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting that you should ask this, I had only 'heard' that Kirklands version was the same as Unisom but now when I look at their bottles it actually says on the package that it is the same as Unisom and when I compare ingredients they are the same. What is interesting though is the reviews (there are a ton that say the same thing) on the Kirkland product say that Kirkland has changed it's formula yet it is the same ingredient so I wonder if there are differences in the quality of the ingredient because even the dosage is the same so it is a bit of a mystery. Unfortunately that is the extent of my knowledge on the formula. Good luck!

Yes I did notice that they changed the product, the ingredients listed are the same but noticed the bottle was different. I am assuming the quantities of the ingredients changed but it didn't say on the packaging so don't know for sure. At the time I was taking it regularly and did notice it wasn't as good as the original but still worked for me. When I was buying them I either bought them from US Costco stores when I made trips to the US or ordered them off Ebay from third party sellers because the Canadian Costco did not sell them.

I have been battling insomnia for 25 years . I don't take sleeping pills because of one Medication's I am on. I am a burn Survivor that is the root of my Problem. So I agree with the Sleep-aid from over the counter. It has melatonin in it and a few other relaxing ingredients. I will drink a cup of chamomile tea with 2 tea bags 2 hour's before retiring because I don't want to be peeing all night. Also hot/milk really does help. However what always always works the best is I start counting my Blessings and I find that I fall asleep counting them.
