How I Customized My New "Travel Painter Set" from Cheap Joe's & Plein Air Watercolor Sketch Test

Hello everyone! In this video I will show you my new Travel Painter/ Whiskey Painter Set from Cheap Joe's. I will also show you how I customized it will a folding sketch board to hold my paint, palette, and water container etc. If you don't have this Travel Painter Set you can still make a folding sketch board of any size for your watercolor paper, sketchbook or block that you use. I have made several of different sizes to accommodate my various sketchbooks. I have multiple painting setups that I use on different occasions.

Here is a link to the foam core boards that I use to make my sketch boards. But you can use any size or brand of foam core boards with the similar results. Foam presentation boards will also work if you cut them to the size you need.

I read recently that Joe Miller used to travel around the country and he would finish up each day at a bar in whatever town he was in. He would paint his little paintings at the bar, dipping his brush into his whisky (why it’s called “the whiskey painter’s kit), and then would give the paintings away to whoever was with him at the time. I hope you are enjoying your new plein air kit!

Thanks! This is a nice kit, but I find it easier to paint if I can hold everything in one hand if I'm standing.

If I may suggest: an athletic wristband on your left wrist is a great blotter for your brushes. Credit card sized adhesive backed magnets would be a nice addition to hold the palette and cups instead of Velcro. DaVinci makes some great travel brushes that would fit in the brush space. Nice set!! 🙂

Thank you for the tips! I will definitely have to try the wristband idea! I tested this palette that came with this kit with a magnet. But unfortunately it won’t stick. I’m wondering what kind of metal this is. I love the bag in this kit, but the palette isn’t that great. It seems like it’s a repurposed cigarette case.

@@kimberlyhyltonart - Jarlink 60 piece Refrigerator Magnets and adhesive backed magnetic phone mount plates with circular and rectangular plates can be purchased on Amazon very low cost. (You may have some laying around). The magnets are so strong it only takes one or two to hold the cup or palette. I attached a phone mount plate to the bottom of my plastic travel palettes such as WN Cotman to make the case magnetic. No need to purchase a metal tin. I attach the magnets with a drop of super glue. Tryout whether the plates work best attached to the cup and palette or to the board. Then attach them the way you prefer. Hope this helps. Dear Kimberly - I love your little leather pouch and what you've done with it. HOWEVER, I'm so glad that I've never seen one for sale and I'd no doubt snap it up and fill the flasks 1 x 'Laphroaig' single malt or 'Bells' blended and the other with water.!! I'd not get a lot of painting done!!! Like your inventiveness in adapting the set to your requirements. You've clearly spent a lot of careful thought on it. Maybe you can get that attentive husband of yours to lightly rough up the mixing area of your palette, mask it up and spray it with a couple of coats of white enamel to get a better idea of colours when mixing. Just an idea? Another thought - perhaps you could wind enough tape for your excursion needs around a pencil and relieve that second little pouch for other things? Thank you for the suggestions! I have thought of trying to paint the inside of the palette. To be honest, I have other palettes that I like better, it seems like it’s a repurposed cigarette case. This little bag really seems like it’s actually a repurposed whiskey travel bag. It’s nice, but I had a problem with the collapsible cup the last time I was painting it collapsed and water spilled out. I am rethinking what to use in place of it next time. I’m always trying new ways of doing things.

@@kimberlyhyltonart Hi Kimberley - thanks for getting back. Just a suggestion. Automobile Spray pain might not be tough enough over years but try to get enamel spray paint and give it a lot of drying time. Every good wish across the pond Paul

I’m sorry! I feel the same when I try to order things from the UK. I have my eye on some brushes, but the shipping cost discourages me. I actually feel like this set was originally an actual whiskey drinking set with a carrying case. Complete with collapsible shot glasses, flasks and a stir stick. Maybe you could find something similar you could use. And just add a small paint pallet, paper pad and travel brush.

Hi Kimberly!! Its jade :) I've had some significant health issues and flares so I've not been able to keep up with much...but today I can move around a bit so had to watch and comment :) This was great :) I adore those little kits...one day!! Such a fun kit to made your own!!!! Also, I have a scale for baking so grabbed a piece of my foam core, its a bit larger but doesn't have tape so just approx...but it's 3 ounces, double the size of yours and has 2 4x6 watercolor papers taped on that are in progress which is why I haven't fully taped it up yet....so your smaller one, even taped up probably isn't more then like 1 or maybe 2 ounces max I'd think...so thats pretty awesome :) I love the way you cut this one different, like a book cover. Similar to book covers for the journals I make, just different material :) fits perfectly:) That's an absolutely gorgeous view and you did a beautiful job in your sketching!! Hope you and you're family are doing well!! :) Oh and people love to have links too...like to your favorite products or to whatever it is you're showing at the time. Just an idea :) or even a link to your Amazon shop with the things you use....I'm not sure how to do that one, I've just seen it done so thought I'd mention it to ya :) Anyway....have a great week!!!!😊

That’s wonderful! I didn’t know they were that lightweight. I know people like links but I’m not sponsored by any of the products I mention in my video’s. These are just the things I use. I don’t have an amazon shop. Maybe I will try to look into getting affiliate links for the products I use and recommend. If I review a product I want to make sure it’s an honest review and not just me trying to sell something. I have seen a lot of artists do that. I just need to find out how. If it wasn’t for my husband, I’d be a starving artist. I hope one day to be able to make a living doing what I love.

@@kimberlyhyltonart oh yea, they're super lightweight which is great! I've always loved how crazy lightweight the stuff was when i first started painting, but I had only been using mine in the house for my watercolors, not taped up nice and using as like a whole set up, so for that its especially nice to have something so sturdy, foldable and lightweight to use while standing or sitting outside!! :) Oh yea, no I isn't mean it as even an affiliate thing or that you had to be sponsored by whomever, I only meant it gives people places to go if they wanted the same brushes or paints you enjoy using kinda thing...but no biggie, just a thought :) Have a great week!! :)

@@jadedenthusiasms I do love how convenient it is to have all your tools on the same board. It being so light weight is wonderful! I agree that people like links. It makes finding things easier. I have bought art supplies that way. I may start adding links if it’s something I really like. I’m going to try to figure out how to get an affiliate link as well. It would be nice to earn some cash if I help someone sell a product.

Is that "stirring stick" a STRAW? If so, it can be used to create affects by blowing paint around on the paper.

No, it's solid. Since it's a modified drinking set, it's intended as a stir stick.

I have one that is very old. The surface is peeling. I thought it was leather but it’s not. I was thinking of adding leather or duct tape to the outside? Maybe I bought an off brand.

I believe the one that I have is leather, but I can’t remember to be honest. So far it’s held up. I’m not sure what would be the best fix for yours. I believe they make a leather repair kit. Or you could try painting it with acrylic? Your idea about the duck tape may be better. Let me know what you decide try and how it works. Thanks!

Mine is about 9 years old. It started separating a few years ago and it looks like it's thin sheets of leather glued to a thin cardboard. I put some E6000 in the layers to glue them back together and they've been holding together since then

Robin, you’re right. I wish the mixing area was painted white. This is not my favorite palette. It’s made of metal, but it’s not magnetic. However I really like the little bag. You can fit other small palettes in the bag. That’s what I’m going to do once I use up all the paint in this palette.
