How I do Street Photography in my (Boring?) Town

I love photographing in great big cities like London as much as the next street photographer but recently I've really been enjoying documenting where I live, even though it's a rural town which I don't find that exciting. I think it's really valuable to document where you live, so hopefully this video gives you some ideas to try next time you're out in a smaller more boring place.

Hi Tim, I think the problem with the modern day you tuber or social media photographer is the demand to produce work. Martin Parr et al had the luxury of no pressure to produce work daily or weekly, so all we see are their keepers and bangers. If Ansel Adam’s was right we’ll be lucky to get 12 keepers a year. It’s nice to see your thought process at work and you have some good tips, but it is extremely hard for a street photographers work to stand out as there is so much available and so much of it is a bit meh. What I did like and it maybe something you could turn into a project is the hidden faces, that concept might be quite fruitful. I think that project work should not be shared in the making (unless the project is the making!) hold that back as a unique piece of art shared only in your chosen format when the time is right, then people can see just the best work and it will have a value as it would only be available in your chosen format. Just my twopenny’s worth. Take care, Toby

Good post. Twelve keepers a year seems low these days, but may be accurate, especially if one can only get out at weekends. I can go out many times in Gloucester, and get nothing!

Thank you for a fantastic video. I loved the fact that you described your thoughts as you showed each photo 😀. At the age of 63 I have just taken up photography and I have started to enjoy dabbling with street photography with some small successes. My question is a general one, which is what do you actually do with all of the photos you take. Do you “publish” them anywhere? Do you show favourites on a website or other - in other words who gets to see them? This is something I am trying to get my head around as I start to increase my portfolio.

Great video and I absolutely agree with your last comments. No matter how nice it is to explore new places, I find I make my better work when I know a place well ... Maybe the familiarity makes it easier to skip stereotypes and first impressions and, as you mention, I also have mental file of 'half baked shots' at scenes I need to go back to when conditions are right

It really depends on the situation! I used to stop and wait a lot, now I tend to shoot mainly on the fly. Definitely want to have a fast shutter speed if you’re moving a lot. I try not to have mine lower than 1/250 - if light isn’t great then I don’t mind boosting my iso. Then it’s all about practice. I use the viewfinder but also look down at my screen and ‘shoot from the hip’ too :)

I am glad you don’t always use the evf as it telegraphs you are taking a photo. I don’t understand the need to have people going across the frame.
