How I Drilled My Boat Prop Shaft Hole | Drilling a Prop Shaft | Boat Building

This is how I went about drilling the prop shaft hole in my boat. This is the first time I've ever done this but I thought I would share my method and the things that I found along the way. Hopefully it will be of use to someone in the future!

Hi Dan, excellent video again. As I have to start drilling the prop shaft hole for my boat project, can you tell me the diameter you drilled that hole? I guess you are using a 1" shaft diameter right?

Hmm, it's a little while ago now. Yes I am using a 1" shaft, if my memory serves me I think it was 1-1/2". If you are using a fibreglass stern tube as I have, the inside of the tube wants to clear your shaft plus a gap of course. I think mine was 1-1/4" internal and 1-1/2" external so your drill bit size wants to match the OD of the pipe.

You should make a video showing how the propeller shaft is sealed to prevent water from entering the boat

I will use a PSS seal but I haven't got to the stage of installing that yet.

This is a William Jackson design called "Rocket" from the old boat building annuals. I think it's similar to Gentry but narrower, nice design though, I can't wait to start doing the topsides!

Can't you make that strut adjustable.? and use that for trimming the boat...?

Those look like some small heads on those screws attaching the strut?

They were just temporary for drilling the hole, when I fix the strut in place permanently it will definitely have some bigger screws in it!

Where did you get your strut, shaft, and prop?

The strut is a Glenwood speed strut, bought second hand on ebay. The shaft that I used for the tool is an old damaged one out of a boat. I don't have my proper shaft and propeller yet but I will be getting them made by: www.hardyengineering.com

It is a transom mounted rudder.

The rudder will be mounted on a bracket that sets it back off the transom. Have a look at the prop and rudder systems on the Century Thunderbolt, Rainbow III and 2 Le Git. There are many boats that use a setup like this.
