Excellent video, and the fix worked. Thanks a lot, will leave tips. Saved me the money buying a new one. :-) For those not getting this to work, make sure you choose the right place for the resistor, as there are two sections of holes on the motherboard looking very similar (10 empty holes). I put it at the wrong section first, and had to move the resistor after soldering.

Very clear video… 1. I have the DS412+. Looking like the resistor bug would apply to this model? 2. CMOS Battery of mine probably needs redoing sometime. Guess is CR1220. 3. Redo heatsink at the same time? 4. Take it the DS412+ comes apart in same way as the DS415+? 5. One thing you skipped over - you did not show which way round the 100ohms resistor goes. Is it any way or a specific direction?
@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 2 ай бұрын
Hello, While they may look the same, the DS412+ does not use the same type of intel processor and thus is not affected by this bug. This means the resistor fix would not resolve your issue and would most likely cause more problems. Yes always a good idea to replace the CMOS. Redo heatsink? I don't think you need to do anything with the heatsink. These processors don't really suffer from overheating, the cooling Synology put in place is more than enough. The DS412+ and DS415+ are indeed very similar when it comes to design, so taking it apart is almost identical. "you did not show which way round the 100ohms resistor goes" Resistors don't have polarity, so it doesn't have a correct or incorrect way. With that said, please don't try to install a resistor on your unit, it won't help you since you don't have the DS415 you have the DS412 and they require different repairs as they fail differently. I am not sure what you searched on KZfaq but I made 3 separate videos on fixing the DS412+ maybe they didn't pop up for you? I don't know which fault or symptoms you have with your unit, but here are the videos showing how to fix the DS412+ Won't connect to the network: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/raifiqxksMfVfqs.htmlsi=2rMzGcpnWoM8shzB Won't Boot failure 1: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oN19lpZ4v52poqc.htmlsi=Fr7HwWbp_curD4sT Won't boot failure 2: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtaGaNyVs8rceJs.htmlsi=f4TL-0luD_rErP3A I hope this helps

Thank you, this was very helpful. One issue, I think I've made my solders too large (first time soldering), testing the power-up process while motherboard was still on table was all Ok (green light) and again installed in server prior to installing drive rack was Ok. However, upon screwing in the drive tower to the motherboard plate, the motherboard won't power up - maybe solder or resistor is touching the motherboard cover-plate and creating a short. I'll try to see if I can make smaller solders or position the resistor closer to the circuit board.
@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 9 ай бұрын
You don't need a lot of solder, just enough for the component to make a connection to the board. More solder does not equal a better or stronger bond. If you still have issues with it after rechecking it, you can always send it in for repair. We have a flat rate service listing in the video description.

Don't break your NAS opening the case. You may need to reach in and find a little/short metal bar in the inside opposite the motherboard. Reach in and pull in on the bar with fingertips and push the plastic side out with your thumb and slide the whole casing back. The case is locked on this bar.
@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 7 ай бұрын
You are correct that the metal bar is one of the several parts that help hold the case, and maybe it's just a preference, but the way I open it in this video I find it to be easier and safer as it bypasses the need to lift over that bar and opens up the case in 2 steps instead of 1. First, you unlock the shell from the unit and then it becomes much easier to step 2 slide out the shell away from the unit as it's no longer locked in. It could just be that I don't understand how to do the way you are suggesting because I have tried that at first and the issue I always encounter is the amount of force you have to apply is greater since there is a lot of friction between the shell and the other part of the unit. You almost need 3 hands to open up this thing. Luckily in the later versions of their NAS devices, all you need to do is slide it and there is no extra metal bar that locks on the shell.

Great informative video Nick. My DS415+ was displaying the same symptoms, so I replaced the battery and applied the 100 ohm resistor. When testing just the motherboard out of the case (no drives or frame attached), I get the following: Power Blue LED flashes for a while followed by a beep then the power LED stops flashing but stays on, and the status LED flashes green. Then there's a second beep, the power LED stays on and the status LED continues to flash green. I then screwed the drive frame back in and powered on again (still without drives attached). Sadly the original symptoms appeared: flashing blue LED and static Orange drive LEDs, continuing until it powers down after a few minutes. Any idea what is happening here Nick?
@NicksTVRepair

Does it not get detected on the network? Try to access it and see if you can do a software update perhaps. If it works with the back plane removed but not with the backplane installed then the backplane could be at fault or the CPU could be having issues communicating with it.

@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 4 ай бұрын
Yes, what you are describing sounds like the CMOS battery is the fault. Replace it and you should be good to go. It's less common but it's also possible your power brick could be going out. I have seen capacitors starting to fail inside the power brick before and cause similar symptoms, but in my experience, it's more common to see the CMOS battery cause this issue with this unit.

So technically you could also replace the processor to fix it sure and that would be the best way to fix it. This is a NAS. NAS stands for Network Attached Storage device. It's essentially a computer that can hold lots of hard drives to store large quantities of data. This one for example is running 4 separate 8TB drives for a total of 32TB of storage. We have a few larger versions of this at our shop for file sharing between computers. Some of the most common uses are for photographers, and video editors, which require lots of data space to store information. We have a few of these for our business and we use it primarily as a shared data storage space that can be accessed by anyone at any computer station in our shop. We have 6 different computers and all sometimes need to access similar data and or info. Instead of paying for cloud storage, we use these. They connect to your network and can easily be accessed by any device connected to the network either by ethernet or wifi. Very useful for most small businesses or home businesses.

What I do when I have a plastic and know I'll melt it, I grab the component with a regular solder, and those few connections which don't want to hold, I can attach with a low melt solder. No body came back with complains till now :D and I'm doing it for a long time.

I have fixed only a couple of those in the past and all had different faults. The last time we fixed that fault on one of those, there was an IC chip on the back of the daughter board that had the NAND chips on it that was bad and needed to be replaced. I don't have the part number for it and also can't confirm that would be the issue. We have also seen bad RAM cause this or corrupt bios.

@NicksTVRepair
@NicksTVRepair 6 ай бұрын
That should be fine. Either the resistor wasn't installed properly, the trace was damaged, or your processor has failed to the point that this resistor repair won't work and the CPU needs to be replaced. This is something we can do for you. We have a flat rate service for this repair linked in the video description, but the service does not include the replacement of the CPU. If we have to replace the CPU because it's not in a socket but instead is soldered on, it does require significantly more work to perform, and the CPUs are somewhat expensive as well so we usually charge an additional $65 on top of the normal service fee for that repair.
