I just found your lovely channel. Lastnight I watched an older gentleman named Dave, in the UK who also lives on a narrow boat, on the canal. After losing his wife, he became very depressed. He bought a 58ft narrow boat to live on & said this lifestyle saved & changed his life

I have to say May, congratulations on the welding, and George, congratulations on the teaching of welding. The job looks like you have to develop a knack. Which a lot of explanation doesn't always help. I love lasagna but i find i always have to add about half a cupful of sauce MORE to the flat noodles because they absorb a lot of moisture, even the parboiled kind (hard to find, not always worth it). Well done on the welding May, having a teacher like George, is a huge blessing. To teach someone else is skill in its self. Like I may have said before with all boat jobs it takes time to find right solution. Hope the river wasn't too hard to navigate, I look forward to seeing how it went next week.

Gorge and yourself seem to be doing each other good. Happy for you! You probably want to get a good coat of Red Oxide on the roof as soon as you can, or if you want something really good (but a bit more expensive, clean it right back to metal and coat with an epoxy primer, it's good for both a blocker and anti-corrosion. Can be brushed, sprayed or rollered on.

Keep this up and you’ll become a boat builder someday! You brighten my day! I’m a bit concerned about all that smoke coming from your engine.

Great to see you having a go May, but a good first tip from a coded pipe welder is put a flame proof welders hat on to get your hair out the way, ever spark that hits your scalp is a hair root gone if in fact it doesn't catch fire, also keep your eye on bare skin or you will end up with a very sore suntan. For downhand plate welding, as your doing, strike your arc, lower the rod angle and let the rod do it's own walking, so if your amps and rod size are right, no pit holes and ending looking like a pro weld which the flux will just pile off by itself. Practise, practise, practise, and you will soon be welding everyone's repairs if you have a Inverter welder that runs off of any household plug and a handy bit of kit to own, as their light and as big as a large handbag and really handy if your have a metal house. Fix a iron anything, anywhere girl soon as girl power rains on.

Good first try at welding May. I attended a Welding Inspection course years ago, and we had to try welding. I called it "Burning Welding Rods", because that's all I did. Schedule time this year to paint your roof. It is important.

Hi Ms.May. George is doing a cracking Job with helping you fix your Boat and fixing your Heart and Soul methinks. You are a lot Happier,smiling a lot more and having a good ole laugh at life. Now….. You have problems with your Engine or it could be that your Diesel Tank has a few Bugs in it but I’m guessing that your Rings are on the way out on the Pistons ( extremely smoky when engines warm ! ). You can replace the compression rings but it is maybe going to be quite a big job because generally when the Rings are worn out it means that the Sleeves/linings have had it as well,removing the engine and rebuilding it is normally more expensive than just replacing the Engine ( probably time for you to seriously consider upgrading to a Electric Engine ) ? Cost is always a factor but as you are a KZfaqr you may be able to get some Help/sponsor from one of the companies that are supplying and fitting the newer Electric Models 🤷‍♂️. Case of if you don’t ask you don’t get ? At the least I think you should be able to get one for a pretty good discount !. Nowadays we have to think about Emission’s and not just on the Roads but on the Waterways as well and I don’t think it’s going to be very long before it is going to be a legal requirement on the Waterways anyway !. Narrowboating is becoming a lot more popular and unfortunately a lot of the older boats have older engines that are contaminating the Canals and Rivers with Oil and Coolant leaks !!!. It’s great that you are learning Welding Techniques from George,some of the best Welders I know are Women ( Flashdance was the Birthplace of Women Welders….. Great Film ). You definitely should get your Roof painted but you have probably run out of time weather wise and you are probably going to need to get into the Boatyard for that now,it’s getting too Cold at night for the Paint to cure properly and doing such a large surface area and probably having to do a few Coats you will need a few days minimum to get the prep work done and it all painted properly….two pack is going to be a lot better option than normal paint because you use the Roof as a storage area for so much stuff ( 2 pack epoxy is less likely to be scratched because it is tougher ! )….. It will last for Years rather than Paint which would require constant maintenance and need to be redone after quite a short period of time ). Check Your Diesel tank first for Bugs as that can cause issues with Smoky fuel fumes and a rough running engine ( if you aren’t doing constant cruising and are moored up for long periods the fuel in the tank develops bugs,you can get additives for the bugs but you might need to get rid of them the proper way which is done by professionals cleaning the fuel through a filtration machine ). Some Boats have stirrers within the tanks which helps to keep the fuel moving ( Diesel fuel is very much the same as water in where it can get Stagnant ( but in diesel it means bugs ! Probably the simplest way to explain ). Enjoy Life Hun and keep Smiling……Always remember to look on the bright side of life. Live Laugh and Love ❤️

May....you get an awesome boatswain some time. On your Boat you should do everything a little bid youreself. And you trie it, do practice and that is more than many people do today. George is a good teacher and a good Welder/Mechanic ! We are 4 Sisters and 3 Brothers in my Family, and every one of us learned from our Parents. My Sister can do Wood Jobs and my Brothers are abel to sew by hand or the maschine. Every one could do a little bid, for more, or spezial Jobs the Craftsmen are at least the better choice. Like the Beatles sung...with a little help from my friends. And....what you do to your Boat.....it will give straight back to you ! Reliability, coziness and security ! Welding not easy and for a first go you got it flowing which is great . My first go was in metal work at school the teacher was building a canal barge in the playground 400v arc welder really good experience . Wouldn't get past H&S assesment now . Not sure if it floated or sank as it took several years and I left before it was finished . it was a great educational practical project for the school

not a big deal, but you mentioned bringing a Tig welder. you guys are stick welding, a process called shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).

If you are dealing with the rust on your roof and can't get down to bare metal then treat the rust with a product called Jenolite. It will turn the rust into something that can be painted and won't bubble up again.

GTAW- Gas tungsten Arc Welding aka Tig welding (Tungsten inert gas) or heli arc welding, SMAW- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (stick welding) that is what you were doing, GMAW- Gas Metal Arc Welding aka Mig welding (Metal Inert Gas) or wire welding. Have welded long time ago for living using all these methods. Women make some of the best Tig welders, better manual dexterity. Mig welding is the easiest to do. Learn stick welding first the others seem to be easier after you master stick welding. Keep practicing you will be able to do your own repairs one day.

Juat watching this again I notice your first attempt at welding was not much worse than could be found on some 1960s Japanese motorcycles. They were noted for pigeon sh*t welds.
