Today I got a windfall opportunity to pick up a Toro Timecutter 42" zero turn for cheap. It's totally dead, but that might mean it's a simple electrical problem like a blown fuse. If all goes well, maybe I can be mowing the lawn with it by the evening!
I sold this mower for $1800! Check out this video: • Can I Sell My $100 DEA...

Welcome to Garage Story!
I'm in the business of hunting up old lawn mowers and other small machines, and either parting them out, or fixing them up and selling them for profit. Come along for the ride with my weekly vlogs, and how-to videos.
(Note: I never said it in the video, but it turned out the guy talked himself down to $100 from the $150 we agreed on.)

I have an SS5500 TORO. Great Machine for mowing our 2.5 acres. We were having no-start troubles. Just a single click when trying to start. After a few tries it would usually start. If I jumped it with my truck, it would fire up immediately. Do I thought it might be a dead cell on the battery. But battery checked out like new. So, I got to thinking about the starter solenoid. I shorted it and it fired right up! Replaced it with Toro OEM Solenoid and it now starts perfectly every time. Still can’t figure out why, with a bad solenoid, it would start with a boost from truck or charger. One comment on the video… when you shorted the solenoid and it turn over strong but wouldn’t start, my very first thought would be FUEL. So that ground be my first step in trouble shooting. But I learned something from you today! You got a heck of a deal for $150. Our 55 inch was $3000 new. Four years and, except for the solenoid, no problems.

For DIY guys with the Briggs and Scrapiron V Twin motors, if you have a no start, feel the fuel cutoff solenoid when you turn the key on. It should click. If it doesn't, I get my 1/2 inch wrench and turn the solenoid out. See if the plunger moves by hand. If it is stuck, do yourself a favor and order a new solenoid! It will stick again! They get rust inside. Even if you get a bit of oil to go down and make it smooth you will go out on a day you undoubtedly have no spare time and that @*$# solenoid will shure enough be siezed. If you decide to rebuild the carbeurator and the jets do not just fall out, the O-Rings are most likely ok! But, you may find the O-Rings in the kit are too large! The best way to tell is take the 4 loop (O-Ring) seal from fuel tube and compare O-Ring from the kit with the smaller of the quad O's. If the O-Rings in the kit are bigger, do not try and replace them with the kit supplied ones if they're too big! You will just end up either buying new jets or the jet kit which is $15 minimum and a long, slow boatride from China! Good Luck out there!!!

If I remember right, I didn’t use the trailer for two reasons, one because the deal came up while I was at work and didn’t have it with me, and the the others being it was fairly far away and it was simplest to just put it in my truck bed. Thanks for watching!

I have an older Toro zero turn, looks like the one in the video, maybe a bit older. We tried to cut the grass today, got two swipes and it started smoking underneath where the pulleys are. It has oil on it as well but we don’t see an oil leak. Our main question, is it worth putting a new pulley on if that’s what’s causing the smoke?

Excellent question! I have not changed the fluid in this type of transmission. But I would imagine that there is a way to do it. @garagestory
@garagestory Жыл бұрын
I think that is pretty common to backfire in that situation. There are two things you could try. One is letting it idle for a longer period before shutting off. The other is kind of the opposite, but maybe more affective - just shut it off with the engine running at full throttle!
@midiband1234
@midiband1234 Жыл бұрын
At full throttle is when it backfires really loud. I'll try it when it is idle. Another problem is when I put it back in the garage, I smell raw gas, and the whole house starts to smell bad. Their doesn't seem to be a fuel line leak. Do you have any suggestions as to what it could be? Thanks.
@garagestory
@garagestory Жыл бұрын
The float might be struck open or not sealing shut all the way. Is your oil level rising? Usually the fuel will flood into the oil and make the oil level rise.
@willfriar8054

The Kohler motor is a piece of junk. The crankcase is held together with the bolts on the top cover and they work loose. You have to keep those suckers really tight put some Loctite on them if you haven't cracked the block already. The deck is flimsy if you run into a lot of stumps it will actually roll over and hit the blade. welded up a new one out of 1/8 steel and angle. Used rebar to make a bumper. Now I call it the farm deck. After 15 years I re powered with the Harbor Freight Predator motor and I had to make very few modifications. I wouldn't trade my Toro in this condition for anything. It runs over small logs and makes them mulch or just kicks them out. I made an attachment for the deck like a little snow plow off the side and I use it for refilling ditches that I make with my trenching machine. It'll refill a ditch in 3 passes faster than I can walk LOL make your own deck. If you reply and you need a little information I can send you a picture Maybe.
@garagestory
@garagestory 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, very interesting! I was actually just learning more about the bolt issue with those Kohler’s yesterday, so great timing on your comment! My plan is to sell this mower, so I will probably just check and make sure the bolts aren’t loose, and maybe add locktite to them. The deck is still in good condition on this one, thankfully!
@willfriar8054
@willfriar8054 2 жыл бұрын
@@garagestory the flywheels will work loose and Shear the key. That throws the ignition timing off. And it makes it very hard to remove the flywheel. You have to drill and tap extra holes so you have four bolts instead of two. Tighten everything up and whack it good with a sledgehammer it'll come off
@willfriar8054
@willfriar8054 2 жыл бұрын
@@garagestory when I have to deal with something like that I tighten the bolts down exactly where they're supposed B & I drill additional holes in the case I ran the tap straight through so it's threads and threads hardened Allen screws can't move in the case.
