Hi everyone! Watch in HD :)
In this video I talk you through how I glaze my polymer clay charms using UV resin! A lot of you have noticed how shiny my charms have become in some of my other videos, so here is the tutorial showing you exactly how I do it. While I do really like polyurethane as a glaze, I trialled UV resin about a year ago and love it so much that I haven't looked back. The shine, strength and protection it gives to my charms makes them look and feel so much more high quality, which is why I now use it. I really hope you enjoy this video and gain something from it!
Things I cover in this tutorial:
- What I use to glaze my charms (UV resin)
- Materials you will need to glaze and cure
- UV light options
- Steps of glazing (charms and figurines)
- Cleaning your materials
- Benefits of using UV resin over other glazes
Where to find UV resin online:

This might be obvious to some, but it wouldn't be to me if I hadn't looked it up: Glass blocks out UVB rays, but not UVA. Meaning that, depending on your UV resin, hardening behind a window won't be as fast as right outside in the sun. But it's also not save to place whatever holds your resin (like her silicon mold) close to a window while glazing, since it might cure partially. So the best thing would be to go for a place as far away from a window as possible while glazing and then go outside for full on sunshine when curing.

My mom ordered UV resin off online for my Christmas present and I didn't know how to use it to glaze or use it for any projects, but now that I've watched this video I gave it a try and the results were fantastic! Thanks for the tips, it was super helpful.

Thank you for all your amazing videos Rachel!! As I venture back into Polymer Clay cabochons after a decade, I'm finding your tutorials very helpful and inspirational!! This may have been mentioned in comments, but I have had experience using UV resin for years and always use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to wipe down surface after curing under UV light, and also use the alcohol to clean up the brush. I use cuticle oil to dap a bit onto the brush after washing to condition it and it makes the brush last so much longer.

I did not know about the darker clays and how resin doesn't work directly with them!! I will keep that in mind for my charms! I've also noticed when cleaning my brush, if i swirl it around in a small cup filled with isopropyl alcohol, it cleans it much quicker and works really well. I'm able to wash it with soap and water after it is rinsed.

I've been using UV resin for a while now and switched to the poly glaze to try and save time... I think they both take time and there really isn't a way around that... However - if I dip in the poly glaze and then use the UV (like you did on the dark piece) then the UV levels out better and you can get away with the 1 coat... Loved this - thank you so much.

I really enjoyed this tutorial and I am feeling much more inclined to try this than I was! I did notice that at least one of your bottles said "non toxic" on the bottom, but friends who do a lot of crafting have warned me that using resin which needs curing is usually very toxic! There have been recent tests which show that most of them are much, much more toxic than previously thought!! I wonder if you, or anyone else reading this, knows more about that aspect of using resin?

To use 2 part epoxy resin to glaze charms, I'd personally recommend using quick-curing resin if UV resin isn't available. When you use the resins with long drying times, I've found the resin often drips off the clay and there are unglazed patches in the finished product. :3 Also waiting until the resin starts to set up and becomes a tiny bit thicker also helps. I haven't had the chance to use UV resin yet, but I hope to test it out some time. :3

Hey Rachy I was wondering if it was normal for resin to take longer to harden on polymer clay. Since I tried UV resin on a piece of paper and it hardens quick with a UV flashlight but on clay it takes really long. Is it normal or is it just me?

Same issue. I spent ages with the UV flashlight and my two tiny charms were still sticky. I've just left them in front of the window now because I just don't have time to continue holding a light over them. I was hoping to not have to buy a bigger UV lamp/lightbox because this is just a casual hobby, but this has been frustrating.
