What you said about the statistics game being unfavorable for humanity/art students is so true. I'm interested in criminology but all related classes that my school offers are unweighted, so naturally my gpa is just lower than all my friends who are interested in stem. I've always known I was a humanities person but I didn't known which exact field, so I experiemented with a bunch of fun electives in 9th/10th grade, but since they were unweighted, it has made it really hard to raise my cumulative gpa even though I am taking multiple AP's now and earning A's.

I'm glad you can relate, it's definitely tough to have a competitive gpa and explore the humanities... I made a note of this on my common app (in the additional info section)!

Congratulations on your dream college! Also, I am doing journalism in my 2-year college. It was very cool. I will be majoring in journalism for my BA degree at a 4-year college. I have been studying at a 2-year college for 6.5 years. When I was at a younger age, I had to switch schools from state to state for another 2 to 3 years back in grade school. Back in high school, I had to a lot of moving from state to state for another year as well! I have a father who is military, so I moved all over the states. I am from Puerto Rico because of my mom. However, I am technically from the city of Buffalo in New York. I lived there during my early childhood until age 5. I was raised to be a military child. I was diagnosed with autism at age 3. It was before I started preschool. I grew up with an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Back in my last three years of high school, I had co-teachers and teacher aids who assisted me in my regular education courses. However, I was some elective courses in the small group of setting. Other than that, I was mostly in all my regular education courses except for 10th grade. In 10th grade, I was in some special education courses. I have been a special education student all my life until I went to high school for 9th grade. I lived in three different states for 3 years. I lived in Virginia for 6 to 7 months, and Puerto Rico for a year. Also, I lived in other two different states for 2 years. For right now, I am living in Florida. I will be graduating with my AA degree in general studies for this coming fall semester. Once I complete with my AA degree from a 2-year college, I will be taking acting and music courses from a 2-year college first to learn about a job that relates to television without seeking my degree. Then, I will receive training in acting and music from the studio. If music does not work, I will be sticking to acting of training in the acting studio. Once I receive my training in acting on television, I will be back to a 4-year college to receive my BA degree in journalism or communication next year in the fall of 2023 to help me to become a journalist on television. My dream career is to be an actor, singer, and journalist on television. If music does not, I will be working as an actor and journalist on television at the same time. Also, great job with your content. You have really great content. I really enjoy watching your video. You have very great ideas. Great job with receiving your awards in journalism. You did a great job! I am very happy for you! Again, great job. My name is Andres by the way. I speak Spanish and English. I learned both languages at the same time, but mostly in English as a kid. I graduated from high school in 6 years ago. Good luck with your dream college. Again, congratulations on your dream college! God bless you and your family.

hi! i just wanted to say thank you for making this video bc i’m currently a hs junior that is stressing about the college admissions process lol. we have many similar stats/ecs and this really made me feel confident in what i have accomplished. like you, i have a lot of journalism ecs but i also have some medical related ones like hospital volunteering, shadowing, and dual enrollment anatomy classes. is there a way i can combine journalism and medicine into a theme on my application? (applying to a psych, neuro, or biochem major) do you think my chances of getting into an top 20 w/ premed track are hindered since i have journalism ecs and not strictly science? thanks so much again.

Hi Emma, I’m so glad that you found comfort in this video :) College admission is definitely stressful, but it seems that you have worked hard and have a lot to be proud of! I would say having journalism and pre-med ECs can only help instead of hurt. In college, I have met many people who do newspaper but study neuroscience, or English majors who are also pre-med! What I’m trying to say is colleges value well-roundedness, and as long as this combination makes sense to you, keep pursuing both! There are many narratives you can craft around this. For instance, a great scientist has to be able to report their studies in scholarly journals or even write books. Of course, there are so many different perspectives you could take, but I’d say just keep being true to who you are. Best of luck!

I’m not completely sure what I wanna do but I wanted to do something related to STEM when I get to college. Im currently in 10th grade though and haven’t done anything my freshman year in terms of extracurricular so any tips? 😅
@insertnamehereee
@insertnamehereee Жыл бұрын
Hi, 10th grade is still pretty early on, so you still have lots of time to build up extracurriculars. I guess my tips would be to 1) check what programs are top performing at your school (robotics? journalism? theater?) and join one that interests you 2) try out a number of things casually maybe 3-4 so that by junior and senior year you can really narrow in on your favorites and 3) find the extracurricular that feels fun, highlights your strengths and provides good learning opportunities for you… hope this helps!

Hey if you could give me some advice I would really appreciate it! I spent a half of my sophomore year in Spain and due to that I didn’t finish the three ap classes I had begun in the beginning of my sophomore school year. But the classes I took in Spain were much more advanced and ( plus) I didn’t know the language while I was studying them and as a result of studying them I became trilingual. Obviously now I’m under a lot of pressure to do as many ap classes as possible junior year since my school didn’t offer ap classes to freshmens and senior year ap classes don’t count. Do you think the advanced level and language aspect of my classes in Spain compensate for the ap classes I wasn’t able to finish? Also, how do you even get involved with awards? I intern a lot at local newspapers but I have no idea how to apply to a competition? Do you just hand in an example of your writing online and wait for the answer? Congratulations ( even though it’s been a few years) on getting in. Thank you so much!!

Hi, I might read my own essay later on in this channel so stay tuned! As for reading your essay, sure... though if you wanted serious feedback, I would consult a counselor or family/friend! If you wanted me to provide that type of help, I would probably charge you, though I don't currently have some kind of college essay reading business model set up. @@irischeng4754 maybe I’m thinking of the wrong thing since I don’t remember exactly! I know for something I was able to squeeze this all in, but I’m not sure this would be fitting for additional info. I think the most important info is that u were a New York Times contest runner up and only x percent of ppl achieve this honor. If there’s space, maybe put the title of the contest (or any searchable word) in case they want to look it up! Hopefully this works-if you have a college counselor I would definitely consult them first though!

@insertnamehereee
@insertnamehereee Жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel, yes this should be okay since admissions officers know that some students haven’t started deep diving into their majors yet. I would just ask if you had access to taking this class earlier or not. If it’s built into your school system (for instance you aren’t allowed to take this class until senior year), you should make a note of that in the additional info section. Context is everything :) good luck with ED!

Hello, thanks for leaving a comment! That’s great that you are confident in your extracurriculars! As for academics I would probably ask how competitive your class is and if it’s typical for the top 10 students (the top 25%) to go to schools like the ones you mentioned? Also, other scores such as AP/IB scores and SAT scores can put you in good academic standing with colleges. I think as long as you are taking challenging classes and pursuing your own academic path to the best of your abilities, Columbia and other colleges will see that-and if possible, with course selections that intersect with the majors you mentioned you plan to pursue. I hope this helps!

@@lochans3593 I think if you don’t have any other standardized metrics (AP or IB scores), a very good SAT score could be a good way to show how you stack up nationally/internationally as opposed to just within your own school.
