Here's the stats I had that got me into Rice University! Welcome to the first of a three-part series that will discuss how I got into Rice University! Here I will discuss the stats that got me into Rice University. Everything from my SAT score, ACT score, GPA, and the high school classes I took will be talked about. Obviously, you don’t need to be incredibly academically talented to get into Rice (there were people with better scores than me). In my opinion, extracurriculars are more important and I will be talking about that in the next part of this series.

I appreciate the video, my only problem is why do you say that you "Obviously don't need to be incredibly academically talented to get into Rice"? You had perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA and 35 ACT!?! These are incredible scores and you should be proud of that! (And BOTH your SAT scores were actually really good to). Let not pretend you were some average Joe that just happened to get in. No, great scores do NOT guarantee admittance, but it's a top school and they do take a look a the holistic view of all of their candidates. But don't make it sound like they are just letting anyone in, they are not.

Good point. What I tried to say (though probably could've conveyed better) is that once you reach a certain threshold for gpa/test scores, then academics won't help you distinguish yourself from other applicants. But yea, getting high grades definitely helps.

This is a well-done video. I'm adding something as a father with two kids who each attended highly selective universities. The kinds of grades and scores that Gerald was rocking in high school, that's the bare minimum. If you're not at those levels, or nearly so, don't bother applying. But grades/test scores by themselves aren't enough. One thing that can distinguish you is achievement, at an objectively-established elite level, in some type of extracurricular. Musical instrument. Sport. Artistic endeavor. Something that shows (a) a lifetime of dedication and passion, and (b) a commitment of 10-20 hours per week in high school, meaning you can make the high grades and test scores while devoting a ton of time to a non-academic passion. A second thing is being involved in teaching or tutoring. That can be huge. Finally, a killer essay on your application. Try to avoid "epic" topics in your essay. Instead, write about something that is deeply intrinsic to you.

Haha thanks, I try to reply to any comments I get! And to answer your question, yes I did go to Rice with a friend of mine from high school. But I do want to emphasize that this was completely coincidental and wouldn't advise having that as a criteria for choosing college. Totally understandable thing to worry about though, and I'm willing to bet that it's something almost everyone worries about. I think what helped me ease my worries though is just knowing the fact that many if not most people will be in the same circumstance so you're not alone!

Hi! I've been binge watching your videos instead of finishing my personal statement, and they've fully convinced me to Rice. Through this research-based form of procrastination, however, I've also discovered Rice's drastic disparity in its acceptance rate between ED and RD applicants, so I'm wondering which deadline you applied under because that's been a topic of debate between myself and my parents. I'm also wondering, if you're comfortable with sharing, what extra/co-curriculars you participated in besides Marching Band (btw, fellow band veteran here! I played the tuba lol, do NOT recommend). Sorry for all the questions-they're out of both panic and curiosity because my academic stats are similar to yours, but minus 3 of your APs. (How did you even get any sleep in high school??) Anyway, I know I'm about 2 years late, but hopefully you'll still see this comment! :)

@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Maureen! As for whether or not you should do ED vs RD, the big question I asked myself was whether or not I would regret getting locked in to Rice in the case that I had the chance to go to another uni. For me personally, Rice had all the qualifications I looked for in uni and would honestly still choose it over some other uni's (and yes, over some ivy's too). At the end of the day I chose to apply ED for the reason I said above. I won't go into too much details about the qualifications and stuff I was looking for since they may be completely different from what you want. As for ec's, I applied to colleges as a bioengineering/pre-med student so I did stuff like interning at hospitals and I was president of my high school's alzheimer's club. Some smaller one's just included NHS and other volunteering activities around my community. Hope this helps, and if you have any other questions feel free to let me know here or you can email me (gsw1@rice.edu).

@@GeraldWang Thank you so much for your response!! I didn’t see that you’d posted another video about your extracurriculars, so sorry for making you repeat yourself! So I actually did the same as you and took the SAT last year without any preparation and I got a 1440 too, but I never got to retake. (They canceled on me 6 times 😭) The only standardized test score I really have is my Math 2 subject test, which I got an 800 on-mostly due to a whole lotta luck, but what do you think? Should I just submit my Math 2 score and let them falsely assume that I probably could’ve gotten a high SAT score but just didn’t get the chance to, or should I submit both?
@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang 3 жыл бұрын
@@maureenzhang6826 Ask some others for their input as well but I would personally submit both. A 1440 isn't bad and generally when you don't submit something then they assume the worst. For instance, if you choose to hide your gpa when applying for jobs, a lot of recruiters have told me that they assume the worst (though this situation is slightly different). Hey there! I’m Shannon (though this comment is published under another account, I’m not sure why) and while I’m still a long while till college, I’m absolutely smitten with Rice. I’m wondering whether there’s Rice specific activities that I can participate in while I’m still in middle school that can boast my chances of acceptance? I know that it’s a research based school, but I want to pursue entrepreneurship when I’m older. I’m the current co-leader of my school’s creative writing club, my grades are pretty good, I’m in double accelerated math, but I wonder if there’s anything I can do to set myself apart from the crowd, preferably something that contributes to charity. Thanks for responding if you do and have a great summer!
@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang Жыл бұрын
Hi Shannon, glad that you're interested in Rice! I don't believe there are any formal activities for people in middle school but I would reach out to the Rice Admissions Office and ask. You can find their contact at the bottom of the site: admission.rice.edu/ With the way you described yourself, I think you are definitely in the right path to success and have already set yourself apart! Though since it seems like you want to pursue entrepreneurship when you're older, I think founding some kind of successful business or club would definitely make you stand out. The first thing that comes to my mind given that you also want to do something contributing to charity would be to start some kind of club that benefits a cause or issue you are passionate about. But in any case, these are just a couple examples so definitely take the time to explore what you're interested in! Good luck, you got this!

@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! Short answer is yes, if you decide to talk about your summer/after school activities in your application then they'll definitely use that as part of the decision process. Long answer is that it also depends on what the activity is and how you frame it. Many universities know that students like to pad out their resume's with ec's so if you put an activity in your app just for the sake of having it in there without much substance then they'll likely gloss over it.

so i know this was a long time ago but i need advice so it's worth a shot. i'm a freshman in high school and my dream school is Rice. I don't have AP classes in my school but I do have honors classes. I take all honors classes and i'm in UIL debate and band. I don't think this matters at all but i also do powerlifting. I have kind of a sucky ranking right now at 15 out of 132 students. I know that i have time to raise it but I'm still really nervous about being good enough to get in by the end of my junior year. I plan on being the representative for my school at Girls State junior year and being in NHS and competing in the American Legion speech contest but that is probably not nearly enough to get me into Rice. @GeraldWang
@GeraldWang 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lilly! Academically you seem to be doing well! In my opinion, your school not providing AP classes is not as bad as one may think application wise. If you continue to do well in the classes you're taking and challenge yourself with honors classes then recruiters will see that. The biggest downside to not having AP's is more just the fact that you can't start college ahead while your peers can skip some intro level classes. Debate and band are always good ec's so I'd say keep at it there! Powerlifting can be something to talk about in your application if you see it as an important part of your life. All the other things you're going for will help because it's showing recruiters that you're being proactive (just be sure not to portray yourself as a jack of all trades). I have a couple of friends studying polisci and they all had leadership positions in various clubs/ec's so I'd try to see if you can get into leadership positions for activities that you really care about. The most important thing is to show recruiters that you're passionate about doing things that you enjoy as well as leading others in those things. But you definitely seem to be on the right track! Hope this helps and let me know if you have other questions

Name times where you demonstrated leadership. 4. If you have unlimited resources, how will you change the world? Just be sure to know in and out the things that you are interested in and prepare for these questions!

Only problem is my SAT score is a 1400, do you think Rice or any other selective school will penalize me for having a good GPA but a bad-mediocre SAT score? I have solid extracurriculars including varsity sports and fine arts all 4 years.
@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I would say that GPA and test scores help in getting past the initial screening. Of course, there are exceptions where people with really good extracurriculars can get in without top level grades, but for the most part once you reach a certain level then it shouldn't matter too much. I think you being near the top of your class will be enough to get you past that first screening and a 1400 SAT score isn't bad at all. It may raise the eye of some admissions officers but if you have good extracurriculars and essays to back yourself up then it should be fine. Personally, I would take the SAT one more time to see if I can get it higher but I would still be proud of a 1400.

Hey Gerald..In the video you mention you switch major from the medical field to something else later. May I ask why you made that decision? Just curious because my daughter wanted to go that route at Rice but fearful of the difficulty and pitfall associated with that competitive area. Did you find it was difficult competing with other in your class that compel you to move to a different major. Hope you can give an honest assessment. Thanks.
@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang Жыл бұрын
Hi Mitch! I main reasons I switched were because: 1. I realized that the career path of being a doctor wasn't something that I wanted to invest years and years in. 2. A lot of the topics that I needed to learn wasn't very interesting to me and again I didn't want to invest so many years around stuff that I didn't find much interest in. 3. I found computer science and programming to be very interesting after taking the intro course so I took more and eventually decided that software engineering was a career that I would want to go to. So the competitive nature of the medical field was not a reason I decided to switch. Personally, I thought Rice had a competitive but friendly environment. People were smart and worked really hard but no one I know was trying to push others down while trying to climb. I think that makes Rice special compared to other universities that are also highly ranked in the medical field as a lot of other universities also have a more toxic culture.

@@GeraldWang Your response is so useful. I will forward your thought to my daughter as she was nervous and scare off by others who heard some student dream crush at Rice in their early undergraduate years. What made me ask you these questions is to gauge what are her chances compare to your great academic credential. She is closes, but not as match. For that reason, I was worry that if you can't make it, it would be a difficult challenge and perhaps an unwise path for her. However, since she express great interest in the medical field earlier on (without parent pressure:) and don't mine the invested years, maybe your assessment could give her some hope. Since you maybe nearing the end of your undergraduate study, where you able to maintain you good GPA at Rice? I know it not nearly as easy as when you where in high school, but just to get a sense of the difficulty she can expect, since her career path require a strong Gpa. I been though engineering program and I know a class of 20 students will only usually result several student getting "A". Hope this is not the same in the Bio fields department at Rice. There is no way I would want her to be at Rice if this is true. Thanks for any input Gerald.
@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang Жыл бұрын
@@mitchnn Hi again! While I was not able to maintain a perfect GPA, I was able to maintain a relatively high one. Of course, if I continued to pursue the medical field then I would have aimed for a higher GPA. How grading works is very class dependent and I know from friends that there are classes that a pre-med student or a student pursuing something in the medical field needs to take which only give A's to a certain percentage of the class. I will not say that maintaining a high GPA is easy by any means at Rice but I do know people who were able to do it and are now going to incredible places. I wish the best for you and your daughter!

hi, I'm a y12 international student studying in the uk (a junior in high school), and am looking to apply to rice this fall. i've taken the sats twice (1350 the first time, and 1400 the second) and am thinking of taking it again when possible! would you say applying from the uk is a disadvantage (i'm from hong kong and am an american citizen)? the education system is really different here, eg. there aren't any ap classes, and we don't get gpas (which i'm taking as a report card of such?). if my report card is relatively average (the highest grade is an a* but our school isn't giving it to us as we haven't learnt content worthy of an a*, and i'm averaging an a), would that be a disadvantage? i'm sorry for asking so many questions! i hope you're staying safe during such a time, and i wish you all the best! thank you so much for these videos! rice has quickly become one of my top schools because of your videos and others online! :)
@GeraldWang
@GeraldWang 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nicole, thanks so much! I wouldn't necessarily say that applying internationally puts you at a disadvantage. Understandably, I believe only about 10-20% of each class is international but I think that's more because there are less people applying from abroad. Admissions officers should know about other countries' education system and they usually compare your application with those around you first (i.e. applicants in uk/europe) so I don't think that's a disadvantage. The one thing I will say though is that you said that you're report is relatively average. I can only assume that means there are other students who have a better report card which, assuming some of them apply here, it will be a disadvantage for you. But ec's matter a lot as well! Hopefully this helps, and if u have other questions just let me know!

This depends on the school you're applying for since some universities like to see applicants have ECs related to their intended major while it matters less for others. For me, I had a decent amount of ECs related to premed so I think that helped for Rice since you'll be competing with a lot of students who do have premed related ECs. However, there are always plenty of examples where applicants don't have any ECs related to their intended major and get in because they have a strong application nonetheless so if you can use your artsy ECs to build a strong application regardless of major that's what really matters.
