How I got into the Masters of Architecture program at AA (PORTFOLIO REFLECTION 2018)

This was a fun one as I look back on my portfolio I used to apply to the Architectural Association (AADRL) and Bartlett in London. These projects are a bit old but it's always powerful to reflect and learn from your own history and I figure others can benefit from this as well. My name is Andrew and I am a designer working in California and I am attempting to make these videos to share my knowledge about architecture/computation/design. I hold a Masters of Architecture from the Architectural Association in London and have worked across the USA and in Europe.

Thanks for sharing your portfolio presentation. Question : When applying does AA require extensive internship experience? 2. Is the AA acceptance rate of students from abroad high?

I can't nail down what they specifically they're looking for but for sure professional experience is always great. And yes, a majority of students are not British which creates a very diverse atmosphere!

I was wondering since I have an AA interview tomorrow for the Diploma programme how much change did you show from the portfolio you applied with to the interview itself? Along with whether they would have any interest in the drafting sketches of pages? Any advice would be grateful

I was not part of the diploma program, I was part of M.Arch at the DRL but I would recommend showing sketches as long as theyre provocative and interesting! Of course you can change your portfolio but it may not be worth it as they clearly liked your original. Good luck!

@@AndrewFriedenberg thanks a lot for the reply yeah I realised I just assumed most courses has a similar narrative but I’m sure DRL is different. I think I’ll stick to what I have with a few odd pages to highlight precedents or sketches to show my way of thinking thanks again for the reply!
