Seeing a lesson in-action is truly the most motivating / inspiring as a viewer, even if we are familiar with the curriculum. It’s not just the lesson, it’s the realness of the process and ideas gleaned. Thanks for sharing your time with us.

I totally agree there is a pressure to split your high schoolers to learn on their own. I did this and I definitely regret it. Sadly it's not just pressure from the public school mentality, but also from many homeschool curriculum companies. My older 2 kids are in 9th and 10th grade and I'm trying to repair our family learning culture going forward. It's a fine balance between independence and family togetherness! Thank you for talking about this.

As a homeschooling mom to children who are far from high school, I really appreciate that you post about your experiences and things you’ve learned about homeschooling high school. Your advice will save me a lot of time worrying & “reinventing” our homeschool in the future. You are so appreciated, I hope you know that!

How often do you do a History lesson (I.e. how many times a week)? Do you rotate it with science lessons? We use TGATB for both History and Science but sometimes I have a hard to being consistent with scheduling and fitting it all in!

I agree with you. Our homeschool culture has changed so many times over the years. We have 8 kids, and our first four oldest ones are the exact ages of your four kids. When it comes time for us to do our group subjects, it is only possible when our littlest ones are napping. So we wait until 11-1pm to do group subjects and any quiet reading etc. This has saved so much frustration for us, as little ones need so much attention and can become pretty distracting!

Just wanted to check in. I have six stair steps so basically two younger than you. My eldest is also 9th this year and I’ve had a lot of the same emotions and struggles. We’ve been using TGTB for almost 4 years now but this fall we went back to CLE bc I felt I had to handle high school that way. It didn’t last. We jumped back into TGTB and it felt like “home” when we did. You’re about a mo th ahead of me with history so it’s fun to see. However, we’re going to do the constitution after the first unit, since we were all excited about it. We’re also finishing Geology and starting Birds next month. I’ve had so much fun gathering some extras for that unit since I felt like planning more this time. Wishing you all well! ❤️

Sometimes I watch your videos and I'm like "this lady has it all figured out- she probably is a much better mother than me"-- but then I see the way you looked at your son sideways for his answer to the question on who he'd like to know more about from history and I remember you're a normal person. LOL I appreciate that.

I love this! But I either missed it, but it wasn’t addressed, and that is highschool credits. I don’t have a highschooler yet, but I’ve heard TGTB history is hard to use in highschool because of there being a lack in how to count credit. I’d love to hear more about that.

This just makes so much sense. Like you said it’s about YOUR homeschool culture and why would you suddenly remove a child. The culture would change for everyone. Plus this May be an unpopular opinion… But to me I think history shouldn’t be as Structured as we make it. If there is a history topic that any child wants to learn more about we can easily hand them a book to read on the subject. Isn’t that what us adults would do?

When you started history with your oldest did you stay on the same track with your oldest and just add your next student (and so on for future kids) in when they were ready? If so do you feel like your younger kids didn’t have any gaps beginning at a different part than what your oldest experienced?? I sure hope this made sense.

I had pulled my boys out of public school 3 years ago, I have an 8th grader and a 5th grader. I wanted to homeschool them through middle school for sure. My oldest son should be entering into high school this coming school year 2022-2023 I do not want to put them back into the public school system ever again. I love what I am doing and they are thriving. But, I am a little apprehensive of the high school years of homeschooling. I have been looking into it and doing all the research. And praying a lot. Any suggestions please? Thank you!

How long does a history lesson take? I was thinking of using TGATB for history, but heard it is whitewashed... your thoughts?
@GraceandGrit
@GraceandGrit 2 жыл бұрын
30-45 min generally speaking White washed isn’t a term I identify with so I won’t be elaborating further. The curriculum shares about all faiths and people from all time periods. It touches on some of the more difficult topics and allows for parents to add in what they feel is needed or leave it there if they choose. The curriculum is a guide not a manual that must be followed. Hope that helps you.
