People just call SMT "the original" and created this whole confusion because the stupid localization team of the Persona games for some reason decided to release them as "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona" on the west, when in Japan it was "Megami Ibunroku Persona" or just "Persona". This is what caused the misconception that Persona is a spin off of SMT. One was never a spin off of the other. In short: Perona isn't a spin off of SMT. Both SMT and Persona are different spin offs of Digital Devil Story. Regarding the popularity. SMT was never mainstream, not even in Japan. It never got close to big names like Final Fantasy. And that's because it's been a nieche series for the start, even before Persona was ever a thing. SMT is very difficult to get into for new players and it's themes are pretty damn controversial with their relentless criticism of organized religion and mocking of political ideologies, not to mention the, admittedelly, really edgy dark humor. So yep, Persona did take SMT's place as ATLUS' most profitable IP (Yes, they are different IP's). But that was kinda their intention from the start, and it wasn't a spin off that outshone the main series because, as explained, it's not a spin off of SMT. Just wanted to clear up some common misconceptions people have regarding this subject.

That table should have had Lost Kingdoms 1&2 and Phantasy Star Online Episode III. If I had a nickel for each time a GameCube JRPG had a card based battle system I'd have 5 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's crazy that happened 5 times.

We had the best characters, the best story, a fun rumor mechanic and we were comndemned to see our world crumble as they turned our beloved dark world building into anime clichés : the game. Yep, only Strange Journey and Nocturne count, Raidou is part of Devil Summoner and Digital Devil Saga is it's own series.

They are still part of the Megaten multifranchise.(SMT is the mainline;Megaten includes DDS,Devil Survivor,Devil Summoner,Persona,Raidou Kuzunoha,Majin Tensei,Last Bible and probably many more obscure series that I didn’t listed and the mainline SMT.)

It’s great that the President of the former (imageepoch) is doing well after being silent and leaving the company to go bankrupt. Made a new company under mikage LLC. Criminal girls btw seems to be getting a new console entry to coincide with the mobile version. And they have another project underway, “99girls bulls eye” there’s actually an official website for the game, only has illustrations of 3 of the female leads, and a synopsis of the story, along with a kickass music op so far.. Nothing else has been said about their projects, but hopefully these two games get revealed in some way. Stella glow is such an under appreciated game.
