Hi Friends,
This videos is showing you one of the steps I took to improve my experience with the UniFi Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus.
I replaced the UCK's HDD by an SSD and that had a significant impact.

A lot of people that use CKG2+ with Protect have issues with the Hard Drive with a few cameras. A single 5400rpm spinning disk just doesn't cut it, even with only 5 cameras. A note on this: The OS, applications and configuration are not stored on the hard drive. Changing the disk to an SSD does not make much difference if you are not using Protect as the applications are stored on the 8GB of eMMC memory on board the cloud key. You may get a slightly faster boot as the HDD POST will be quicker with an SSD, but normal operations will not be any different if not using Protect. You can also check CPU Utilisation, RAM usage and CPU Temp on the Settings page for the CK (not in the SDN or other apps) in "About this controller" if you wantto check where a slow down or bottle nexk may be. Sometimes just a reset and restore of previous settings can make these perform faster if something weird happened to MongoDB or if it had crashed (which some do as the backup batteries are known to fail)

I see. The issue was mostly when playing back footage. That was improved by the SSD.

Thanks for the video! My hd died the other day and i swapped it with a brand new ssd, but it still says something about bad hard drive. Not sure what to do now.. i tried factory reset and that doesnt seem to help either. Any tipps would be greatly apreciated,

Enjoyed the video. Thank you. Unifi novice here from Amplifi. Question. I have a new, out of box, unused, not (yet) installed UCK-Gen2-Pro. If I replace the HD now, prior to initial use, need I worry or have to deal with re-installation of downloaded backups (console, protect, network) as was advised in your above video? Can I just pop-out old HD, replace with new and then power up the CK for very first time with no need to concern myself with re-install of backup files since, per below by EsotericArctos, such applications are NOT stored on the HD. Tx you for your response.

I have a small setup on my Gen2 Plus and wanted to see what brand of SSD you picked. 2:35 That is a lot of cameras for a little NVR. I see you got a UDM Pro SE shortly after this video. WD Purple drives support up to 64 single-stream HD cameras. If you ask an SSD to write that much, it wont last long.

@KBTrainings (or Guy), has the SSD you installed held up under constant use or have you had to replace it? I am looking to replace the 1TB drive included in the cloud key gen2 plus and hope getting a good quality SSD (Samsung, Crucial) will do the trick. Thanks!

The SSD can hold up for a long time. Actually a lot is said about SSD for surveillance but most of those failures take years to show up, so there is no problem in using SSD and the difference is significant.

If you get a high quality SSD or enterprise grade SSD, you will get at least the same, usually longer, life as a regular spinning HDD. Not to mention the cloud key will run cooler, which will help the internal battery to have longer life (these do fail prematurely with the heat). As the storage is used for Protect Video, you would want to buy something of good quality. Applications and the OS are not stored on the hard drive. They run from internal eMMC memory, so an SSD does not affect the controller or MongoDB in any way.

In about a month, can you do a one year review of your setup. I have had my UDM and multiple UAP-IW-HD setup for about three years now. Very happy with it. I was planning on two 360 cameras and two door bell cameras this coming summer. I am debating buying the cloud key gen 2 plus or upgrading to Dream machine SE. If your setup has worked well, I will probably choose the cheaper cloud key option.

As I was searching your channel, I see you got the SE… ignore this last request. I assume you no longer use the cloud key.

Correct, the UDM SE is what I use now. But I am thinking of getting an NVR since I may switch to a Check Point for security (I just like to try out stuff 🙂).

Did you take into account the limited lifespan of SSD`s when they are constantly writing to the hard drive from camera sources? They can only write to a location a certain amount of time before that area of the disk wears out.

ive had bad luck with the hard drive because of the UCK-Gen2+ gettting to damn not. the last one i put in on June8th 2022 and it went bad today. just over a month!! i hope using a SSD less heat is generated and i get a disk to last over a year! so sick of this.

Enterprise grade SSD's and high quality SSD's are going to last a very long time and quite possibly out live a spinning disk. Spinning disks on 24/7 also wear quickly. As Don mentioned. Spinning disks fail prematurely in the CKG2+ due to the heat also, not to mention that an SSD running cooler will help mitigate the premature failure of the backup battery, which is quite common in these devices Any electronic storage, including the RAM in your computer, has limited read/write capabilites. No one worries about it with RAM due to the design of RAM, but SSD's, particularly enterprise grade, these days have very long life. Obviously if you buy an old stock SSD or a cheap one you will get issues more often, but who would buy a cheap SSD when it comes to security footage that you want to be reliable in the event of an incident.

While the MX series are a great line, the BX are garbage. Can the cloud key read smart data? The main reservation I have with an SSD in a CCTV recorder is that SSDs have a write lifespan. I always use surveillance rated drives in my DVR/NVRs because they can handle the constant writes for years.

Hi, thanks for the vid. I’ve read that this device can run a little hot. Has that been your experience?
@KBTrainings

Yes, it gets how. But I would it is normal, just like any other electronic device. It doesn't get particularly hot.

@@KBTrainings mine does and the third hard drive this year just went out today. July 12 2022. it only lasted a month. there has to be a solution to this.

There is a rack mount adapter that might act as a heat sink. I am trying that at one of my locations. However, I have had several fry the hard drive. I am switching to the Dream Machine Pro

With that amount of cameras, it will be best to use the NVR. Secondly, for CCTV, you should get a server grade or hard drive made for CCTV.

You're right, the UCK had a lot of shortcomings. Even the UDM SE that I currently still shows me the camera limit warning.

An enterprise SSD in a small install (10 or less cameras) will be fine on a CKG2+, with regular backups. But if it is critical, 100% you should go for the NVR with the RAID configuration options.

Good you didn't go with a cheap SSD. Those can be worse than cheap hard drives in most cases. Crucial makes great SSD. It should be a huge improvement.
