Even the best snowmobile belts wear out. In this video, I'll show you how I inspect the drive belt on my sled, explain how I decide when it's time to replace it, show you I replace a belt, and explain how I adjust my secondary.
This video is intended for entertainment purposes only. Always refer to the documentation that came with your sled, or contact a qualified repair technician before attempting procedures other than those described in your owners manual.

Sorry guys but no, drive belts are not directional. In this video, Ultimax engineer Eric explains why they say you should install a belt a particular way.

I bought a 71 sw433, how do i adjust the belt, I might be blind but i dont see where i can do it. Or is it so old it uses some other method of doing it? Hope you can help me.

I have a question. I bought a 2007 mxz 600 renegade takes off great but when letting off the gas it does like a engine braking type of thing that’s ridiculous.. could that be a clutch issue?
@MyOldSled
@MyOldSled 3 жыл бұрын
Have you checked if your brake calliper is sticking? If it is, it can create heat, and that can cause problems.
@mxr7586
@mxr7586 3 жыл бұрын
@@MyOldSled I checked that and they are fine. You can wiggle them when the brake is off. I even drained all the old fluid out cause the previous owner didn’t do that it was brown. I lifted the rear and turned the secondary to see is there is a lot of resistance but that seemed fine as well. Starting to think something is up with one of the clutches. 🤷‍♂️

A buddy of mine when his belt blew, It was also an Ultimax ! It blew so hard it punched a hole right through the panel near the footwell and smacked his foot ! 4 of his toes got broken and it shattered the bone in his foot ! He was on crutches for nearly a month or so ! Now when I get heavy on the gas I think about him and I always back my foot out of the footwell ! =)

The newer belts for higher HP sleds are very very hard compared to the rubber type belts of old. Also there is 3 different Ultimax lines depending on your sleds HP. Match up the right one.

Late to this party (channel)!! Great video. I’m not the most mechanically inclined person, but this was very understandable! Will check out the current deflection and condition of my belt and clean my sheaves when I finally get out to the cottage this winter. There is a mild knocking sound from the front end on my 2009 Polaris FST IQ Touring when driving at low speed. Disappears at higher speed (or maybe gets drowned out by the engine noise). Not sure if it is related to the belt though. No such noise when I run the machine with the track jacked up off the ground. Will check the belt anyway. Great, helpful video! Subscribed!!

Morning David! That was a super, super helpful episode. Learned a few things I never knew after all these years. Which of course, now begs a question. (1) I always thought that the belt could only go on one way - the way the arrow pointed (the one printed on the belt). So not true? I wasn't aware that there was a need to adjust the width of the secondary. Always just simply put the new belt on and unscrewed the tool and away I go. I didn't realize I needed to check to make sure the belt was sitting at a specific height relative to the secondary clutch plate. Didn't know there was a need to break-in the new belt. Thanks kindly - great episode!! Thanks again for your attention to detail! Cheers!

I agree , it’s weird , I always ran ngk plugs in my two strokes and 4 strokes , Yamaha , Polaris , all brands , got a iq 600 cfi and the plugs that came in the sled originally are champions although the dealer suggests the ngk replacement, I can tell for certain that the champion plugs that were origaninally in the sled from factory , after changing back , they’re definitely hotter plugs and run a bit hotter in my opinion, more throttle response from low to mid for me .... and yes way less plugs fouled.

About that hour glass thing, I had that happen to me. Thought the chain tensioner had come off or something, the noise at low speeds was horrible. I guess the change in belt thickness makes the driven clutch vary a lot in speed, and thus the slack in the chaincase and drivetrain makes horrible noises. Changed the belt, and everything was fine again. Definitely do not try to rip the track off frozen ground using just the engine, you'll probably ruin your drivebelt. Try to lift the skis and track off the ground by hand first.

David, Love your channel. I am thinking of getting into sledding, and am considering purchasing an 08 MXZ XRS. Naturally - due to internet overload - reliability concerns abound. In short, how many kms can one expect a well maintained sled like this be expected to last (currently 12,500 on the odometer)? How often is a crank rebuilt (top end rebuild was done 2.5K kms ago)? What is the mileage on your '05? TIA.

Nice video David! You mentioned doing a video about the clutch and it's the perfect time for me to ask this. My younger brother just bought a sled (ca 6 years old) and I noticed that the primary clutch reacts very slow to the throttle. What I mean is that I need very high rpm for the primary to start moving the belt. Have you experienced this and know why it's like that?

Belts usually have arrows pointing what way it goes. You are supposed to put it a certain way so if ever the belt blows it doesn’t wrap around the back of your primary clutch where it could damage your crank seal and drain all the isoflex grease out of the bearings
@MyOldSled
@MyOldSled 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sebastian. That is so they go back the same way. That info is straight from the engineer at ultimax
@MyOldSled

I think if you put you belt on backwards. If it does happen to blow they are made to blow the parts out of your clutch. Rather then wrapping around your clutch. Just a FYI so like he said read the words when its installed
@MyOldSled

Sorry Clayton, that is incorrect. The belt is the same either way. That is straight from the engineer at Ultimax.

Great video very informative! One thing that was wrong is how you set belt deflection, the best way to set it as instructed by aftermarket clutch kit manufacturers is to tighten the secondary sheaves until you can move the track with one finger at idle. The idea that you should set it so the bottom of the "teeth" is level with the secondary is a myth.
@MyOldSled
@MyOldSled 3 жыл бұрын
Hi MrMtcaleb. Thanks for the comment but belt deflection and belt height are both important and referenced in Skidoo shop manuals. In the 2005 service manual, this information is found on page 318, with a photograph, under Drive system and for all models. "Top of drive belt cord should be flush with driven pulley edge." - as I reference in my video. Maybe let BRP know that it's a myth? ;) While I believe that an aftermarket product may have provided different instructions, I always use the procedures provided by the sled manufacturer. Thanks for watching and commenting.

An ultimax engineer said you just need to do a few temperature cycles up to 150 degrees C to break in the belt
@MyOldSled
@MyOldSled 3 жыл бұрын
:):I know the video, I think Erick said “around 120 c”... I don’t know my belt temperature, (do you?) so I phrased it in a more practical way. Driving it for around the first 30 miles should allow the belt to heat and cool a number of times. The information I provide on break in is printed on the packaging for ultimax belts. The main thing is not to throw them on and pin it before it has a chance to get to temp a few times.

Hi David, I have the same snowmobile although a renegade. The last 2 years I have been having issues every time a installed a new belt I’d set the ajuster towards the 0 and my belt would always be to high and too tight. Last week end I removed the 3 bolts from the ajuster to find out that the bolts appeared to have been cut. Got 3 news ones, which were a few mm longer. Now I have some play and can adjust my deflection properly. I guess my question is have you ever seen someone cutting those bolts to possibly use a belt that wasn’t made for the snowmobile.

I have an 03 yamaha viper 700. last week I managed to go through some ice in a deep puddle. It wasn't a safety issue, but I was stuck, thankfully close to home. It was deep enough in water where the belt was getting wet. As you might suspect, the belt did not have enough friction to get the sled out. I wore into the sides of the belt as i was getting pulled out. I rode it home with a bumpy belt. I parked it in front of the cabin on the lake and I man-handled the belt off. I managed to force the new belt on and I went for a ride without thinking about it. How wrong was this? Do I need to go back and adjust anything? Any comments/advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, you should have broken it in, but if your over 20 miles, too late now. A lot of guys dont and then wonder why they blow belts. Check where its sitting in the clutch. Glad your adventure ended ok. Sounds like it still put a damper on your ride.

My Old Sled thanks for the reply! Yea I did a 50 mile trip which was cut short by a lack of snow. I had to pack the rads with snow every few minutes. If I have any issues I’ll buy myself a good belt and break it in nicely. Have a nice night!

Hey , I’m looking to throw a bigger 1.75inch backcountry track on my 121 iq 600, I know she’ll have the power to move the track but the stock clutching /gearing makes it a rocket ship at past half throttle and a dead dog below quarter throttle or 1-3000 rpm, looking into maybe Geting some lower gearing (maybe the rmk gearing ) and a clutch kit , what your thoughts? , waste of money ? Buy a nicer sled with a stock deeper lug ? Looking to get deeper wet snow performance as where I live we tend to get big dumps of snow , then turns to ice then rain , then it’s hard for my wee lil .91 track haha , makes you a better rider forsure tho

My Old Sled thanks for the response , I’m gonna talk to some people and budget out what I’d need to push that track and get it all tuned , if it’s pushing 2g ur prob right , just sel the sled and put that extra funds for the upgrade into a longer , depper lug sled , anyways appreciate the thoughts !

For me its not just budget. If a sled came with something as an option, great, id do that. But the problem with franken-sleds is that the parts of your sled were all designed to work together. I could make a longer skid fit my old 670, but it would still be an old heavy 97 670 with a long track. But again, some guys would have fun doing that so if its fun, go for it,

Hi Mit. Sorry, that's a common misconception. The cogs allow the belt to remain stiff in cross section, while allowing it to remain flexible around the hub. Its always a good idea to stick with the manufacturers recommendation, so I can't fault you there. Do you know who manufactures the belt you run?

I have actually read of this happening. If you have the right belt, and it was properly adjusted, I would check to see if you have a broken motor mount. It can be clutches out of alignment but I think a motor mount is more likely.

I thought they WERE directional: the cords are corded (cords are wound in the belt) one way and if you put one on backwards - and a belt starts to unravel - it'll spool up around your clutch, but on the 'right' way (so you can read them), the cords would come loose in the same direction as the rotation and not spool up - no?
@MyOldSled

Lol. What would you think my answer would be, given the video you just watched. :) Your thinking is a very common misconception. one of the Ultimax engineers put a video out explaining that, and I contacted a couple of belt manufacturers. As i explain in the video, the arrows or lettering are just so you always put it on the same way.

Hi Victor. I'm sorry, but that is a VERY common misconception. It likely came about because manufacturers either advised people to install belts with the text so you can read it facing the sled, or printed a directional arrow on the belt. They advise you to install it that ways because the belt should alway be installed the same way. All of the information in this video was provided by or confirmed by, several of the major belt manufacturers.

I noticed the stand you are using for your sled. I used to have the same one and to be honest never liked it. The leverage with the handle was terrible and the stand itself is quite cheap. I highly recommend this stand from Princess Auto www.princessauto.com/en/detail/adjustable-snowmobile-lift/A-p1500002e I can lift my sled with one hand and it locks into place easily. Yeah there are crap products out there (if you get the cheapest stuff, good chance it is knock off when you are sorting by price alone online), but any name brand plug is good. If you have issues, rather than blame the product, find out WHY that product you like is WORKING for you, you'll learn a lot more than talking trash on another product :) I'd rather be on a trail confident than fawning over my brand choice.
