Dude thanks! I have a 20" bosphorus that I got about 12 years ago for my main jazz ride. It sounds great and I used one of those promark rattlers for years to get a sizzle sound but it just wasn't the same as having rivets. Today with the help of my dad, who is much handier than me, and your instructions from this great video, we were able to successfully install 2 rivets on that cymbal. Sounds even better now, with that classic Elvin and Art vibe! thumbs up man!

6:44 I secured some rivets by simply "pinching" a straight crease into them near the bottom edge with a pair of my favorite Knipex brand wire cutters (pinched a line parallel to the cymbal). Believe it or not, I did this for Bryan St Pere of HUM back in the 90's. A drill press would have been nice but I managed to use a hand drill with out f'n anything up :) Here's a copy of my "HUM/cymbal" related comment from last year: One of many fond memories: Bryan came to me at work one day and asked if I could add some rivets to one of his cymbals for a "sizzle" experiment. I was not aware that this was even a "thing" ...but after he explained what he wanted to achieve I wasn't about to say no (I was a huge fan and HUM was about to go on TV). We were both pretty nervous about me potentially "trashing" the cymbal ...but after successfully drilling out some clean and evenly spaced holes we were able to relax. I came up with my own stylish technique of securing the rivets and Bryan was stoked! It was a high-five moment. Love you man!

Hey Jules.. don't you think it's safer drilling from the bottom of the cymbal since you can rest it against a woodblock or something? I've never seen anyone drill from the top. But I guess whatever works!

Hei guys. I have never drilled a cymbal, but I've drilled sheet metal. Wouldn't it be safer to drill from the cymbal's bottom side to avoid it springing back once the whole is finished?! I guess it would even prevent cracking the cymbal since the material isn't being stresses and deformed as much... Nice video! Thanks

It probably would. Although, the side making contact with the rivet head would be probably be uneven.

That’s my exact reasoning, Ben. Thanks for your input. Emanuel, if you are worried about the deformation, you can use a piece of wood under the cymbal to support the curvature.

ive seen a couple of your videos now and especially with the release of this one i feel obligated to ask, why do you put rivets in your cymbals? dont sizzlers accomplish the same thing with the bonus of not possibly ruining a cymbal or just being able to switch between sounds?

I can’t speak for him but I’ve found sizzlers just aren’t quite the same sound as a rivet and can be a bit overbearing compared to a rivet. But it is true a rivet is more of a permanent decision

Yeah, sizzlers are a surprisingly different sound! When you crash a cymbal especially, the sizzler just bounces/rattles around, rather than sizzling like rivets would. Rivets are much more consistent, and I personally like the sound of them much more. It also annoys me that the sizzler lays right where you play the cymbal, it’s always in the way for me lol

Also, rivets are easy to take out, and the rivet holes don’t effect the resale price of the cymbal :)

You just push the two sides of the rivet back together, and it’ll slide out. No reversing the hole you drilled however.

You have to have some serious balls to dare drilling in to a +500 dollar cymbal. Seriously. I don't get it how you can comfortably do it.

Lol its hard to stomach, but if you do it correctly, it won't effect the value of the cymbal!

@@JulianArcher I've been around the used cymbal market for a very long time and here a modified cymbal significantly devalues it. That's why I just use a chain when I was the rivet-like effect. I care too much of my 24" Sweet Ride to drill holes in it- but I'll reward you on your bravery to dare doing that to your cymbals. Big cheers man.
