A trick to use with the masking tape. After you put the tape on, paint another layer of the base. If it bleeds, and it happens a lot, it bleeds the same color as below. But, that bleed seals the stencil for the real paint you want to lay down.
@Waterratt4344

I have also used clear to seal the tape from bleeding paint.

Fun fact: if this ship was real it would be way too small to fit any astronauts and the plastic would not survive the stresses of space travel.

For anyone interested in the Xabungle kits that featured in the episode - it was created by the incredibly influential Yoshiyuki Tomino What’s funny about it is that in 1979, he created Gundam, a nuanced war drama that completely revolutionized what animated sci-fi could be and changed the industry forever. He then made Ideon in 1980, a mecha show that ends up with eldritch horrors and some of the darkest scenes. So immediately after this, what does he follow up these two dark, heavy, boundary-pushing series with? Xabungle, a cartoony comedy series. Very silly and deeply unserious and not for everyone, but that’s why I love it! As a fan of sci-fi I’ve been put onto so many great shows just by looking up where my model kits come from, be it a niche 70s anime or a forgotten british tv show. That dingy spaceship kit you got for kitbashing scraps? Who knows, it might be from your next favorite show! 😁

I suggestion I've seen to prevent masking bleed, is to first spray the area with a clear coat, this will block off any potential bleed points for when you apply the paint.

Supposedly you can also use the glue/baking soda combo as a gap filler but I find that it has obvious bubbles that show when you sand it. Some people swear by it though.

@@Sublight_DriveWow! That "D'oh!" moment is so relatable. I would have liked to see how you made a major repair like that on a nearly finished model in that situation. I can never forget a model I had spent days painstakingly painted all the details waiting to apply the final gloss coats only to have paint dripped all over it because I left it in the paint booth when my brother went to paint his model. 😭

Relatedly my gf and I have a project in mind that you’re welcome to run with which is the un-legoing of Lego classic space ships and especially classic space themed MOC’s which seem to capture the vibe better than many of the official designs. Am additional design consideration is we want to make them durable enough to play with. Feel free to run with the idea but remember to ask permission from the AFOL’s before doing one of their designs

That white cloth pattern on the yellow actually looked really cool. It looks great either way, but it might be worth trying to recreate the accident on a future model.
@Sublight_Drive
@Sublight_Drive 7 ай бұрын
The white is actually the bare plastic underneath. I was surprised, but apparently the clear coat actually melts the dry paint before it hardens. I could try and recreate it, but I'd probably use something I don't need to clean off with rubbing alcohol after lol

Very nice work SDC. ???- With your templates on Etsy; Are they print once or can I print more if I want to make a few. Also, can the templates be scaled up easily? Lastly, do the builds require specific Greeblies to build, or just the styrene (add Greeb's as desired) Thanks! Bert
@Sublight_Drive
@Sublight_Drive 5 ай бұрын
Once you have the .pdf on your computer you can do whatever you want with it. Except start selling it to other people for a higher price than I do, but it's not like I can stop you, it's just a dick move. You can build the models with whatever greeblies you like! Or none at all, I suppose. You can scale them up, but I suspect it may cause some issues with some parts fitting if you don't scale up the thickness of your building material to match.
@wingnutbert9685
@wingnutbert9685 5 ай бұрын
@@Sublight_Drive Thanks for the reply and info! I most definitely would not sell your designs! I've been ripped off by a Chinese manufacturer myself, so I know the pain. For scaling up, I was thinking it be cool to make one out of steel. (I sculptor. Welded steel and other materials). Maybe something 6' longish. Paint, chip, then actually rust it. :) Be cool to put it in my wooded property. Maybe some LED's, etc.

I find the 'score & snap' method is trickier in thicker grades, especially cutting out windows etc. As I use the CA & b/soda method too, I think I can get away with thinner stock. Thankyou@@Sublight_Drive
