Tips from a Canadian: 1. Uniqlo ultra light down compact vests are great to layer underneath oversized wool coats without creating bulk in the sleeves. Thick sweater + uniqlo vest + wool coat easily gets me to up to -15 weather. 2. Costco makes high quality AND affordable hiking socks - they're usually around 80% merino wool and around $3 usd per pair. 3. Fleece-lined leggings, tights and pants will keep your bottom half warm!

Thank you for the tips I am in Whitby, Ontario and I am trying to go without my snow pants like I have done last 5 years. I invested in a TNA Super Puff Long version which is a start but I need to update my closet too if I can avoid my snow pants or onesie ski suit just to keep warm I would do that. I have chronic illnesses and I need to stay super warm. So again thank you so much for your advice

I know I'm super late to comment here, but yes I agree with you all!! I also find it weird to see female network anchors wearing sleeveless dresses and tops all winter long, too. Just a strange trend I've seen in the last decade since everyone insists on showing off their fake tanned arms--whether they're toned or not. Feel like no one dresses to suit their body types, season, or occasion anymore. SMH 🤷🏻‍♀️

I live in Stockholm so layering is a must. I received the Uniqlo thin vest for Christmas last year and it has honestly saved me. It's so warm and easy to layer underneath jackets, even thinner jackets. And it folds up so you can keep it in your purse! SO SO useful! Highly recommend. xo

Just a quick Uniqlo tip that has changed my winter coat game! A couple of years ago I bought one of their ultra light down jackets with the sole purpose of wearing it underneath my woolen coats. It is super soft, super light and super warm and makes transitioning my tailored wool coats from autumn to winter a treat ❄️. It even has little buttons on the front so you can wear it under V-neck coats without being able to see it. I really think you should check it out.

One dilemma for me is always that here in my school, it’s SO WARM inside that if I do layering and only take off one layer after going inside, I’d sweat so much. So in the coldest days of winter I usually just wear a very warm and plain ski jacket plus a sweater and a T-shirt underneath. The coldest days here can be -20 Celsius though, at that time all the fashion goes out of the window cuz I need to be alive hahahah

I think this layering idea is great if you're going to be outside for a fair bit and want to still look fashionable. My personal approach on really cold days is thick socks in boots, toque, gloves, scarf and a long parka. The parka simplifies things - it's one piece I can take off so I don't melt on transit/indoors, rather than removing multiple layers.

Brilliant layering video, Emma, best I've seen. I love that you speak slowly, don't shriek excitedly and explain everything in relevant detail. I have never worn any type of leggings under trousers, but I feel the cold badly and have to work in some very cold places, so will give it a go! As I'm petite and not stick thin, my worst nightmare is to look too bulked up!! 🤗😏

You're right, the layering is key. I've bought sheepskin insoles and my cats love them. They hook them out of my boots and treat them like furry prey, carrying them around and growling possessively over them! 😹

Love this video... I actually didn’t know that about layerings socks. I layer my 10year sons socks when he’s playing football in the winter. He always comes back to me saying “Mummy I can’t feel my feet” I thought it was the cold but now know I’ve cut off the circulation on his poor little feet. Emma thank you for that tip alone. Also top tip as well for any body that’s interested.... Pennys (otherwise known as Primark).. have Over the Knee socks that are the things ever. They have thin ones and thicker ones with wool content. I have lots of pairs of these and absolutely love them and best of all cheap as chips. I have to say I’m not big into layering myself - I find it very uncomfortable (I can’t stand the bulked up feeling). I’m a long sleeve therma heat vest and thin knit kind of girl. Over that I wear lightweight feather and down coat. But I love your style Emma and could watch you all day talking about clothes.

Great video, Emma. Another tip would be a thin pufferjacket underneath a woolcoat. Then you won't be overheaded,if you're going for a lunch, but still be warm when you're outside:)

Great tips thank you! Here in B.C. we have that bone chilling damp type of weather. I will often wear a down sweater or they are also called packable down jacket as a layer. They are very thin but under a water proof coat I am toasty warm. Like you I love a good long warm scarf.

Thumbs up for sock science, lol. Instead of leggings, I use fleece-lined tights. That way I already have my socks incorporated which, along with warm insoles, is usually plenty. If I'm spending a few hours outdoors, I can still layer over a pair of socks without too much bulk.

Dang, you have actually given a lot of extremely good advice! I wasn't confident when you said this is what you wear in a London winter since I live somewhere a bit colder and often have wet-cold weather. I legitimately suffer from always being so cold (medical condition and the doctor said it's important I'm warm throughout the entire winter since I'm prone to ear/sinus/etc. infections... I know, I'm mega special 🙄), however, I'm not far off from how you dress, I just never thought to do a thin cashmere followed by a thicker, bulkier sweater. I stopped wearing synthetic and I also used to wear too many tight layers so this concept is better-- and much more stylish. I also do down vests and wear the lined Timberlands to keep warm. Most KZfaqrs will say their winter fashion is a t-shirt followed by a thin cashmere cardigan which couldn't ever work for me. I have subscribed! Thanks girl!

My ski baselayers and socks I bought from 10 years ago are seemingly indestructible. I always think I’ll get a new cuter set next year to wear during the bitter cold months but can’t justify the purchase when my old ones still look good, keep me warm, wick away the moisture and temperature regulate. Cold weather athletic gear is great for temperature regulating.

Pima cotton is valued for its durability, because longer fibers mean a softer and stronger fabric, it's also highly resistant to pilling. It is originally from Perú. Also alpaca is much more sustainable than cashmere FYI

love the uniqlo heattech range as well! bought a few items because of you already 😅👍🏻 and i’m loving the acne canada scarf, too! 😍 but i actually prefer the more narrow size (around 40cm width). the biggest size is 80cm width which is just too much for me to fit around my neck. i feel like i‘m suffocating 😂 acne also do a skinny scarf version (25cm width) that‘s as long as the toteme scarf. i love that version as well! ☺️🙌🏻 very versatile and go with everything! they also do the best colors in my opinion 🥰

Love the tips, Emma - but I do have a question. How do you handle the layering as you're going in and out of places? My biggest issue is the darn near heatstroke I get the second I'm indoors.

I don't really have that problem but if I am in somewhere for a long time - like a shop or restaurant then I will take off a layer or 2 depending on what I'm wearing and either place them next to me if I'm sitting or carry them 👍🏼

I find the heat tech stuff also wicks away moisture.(?) not sure if it’s supposed to. But I’ve worn it under a NorthFace pullover and a regular turtleneck would have me sweating, but the heat tech sort of turns off indoors. It’s weird to explain, but I do like it.

I'm from Canada (Southern Ontario) and our homes and shopping malls are so warm we wear regular clothes with a down coat. Most people don't even wear a hat unless they are outside all day. If people are out all day skiing or snowmobiling we definitely do layer up. Polar fleece is very warm and light, not as sexy as cashmere but it does the job.

So jealous, truly, not just being funny. After a week of over 40 degrees I watched this to try and remember it's possible to be cold, a concept that seems unfathomable right now. I hate the heat, would love to be wearing layers etc., I love winter clothes, as you are showing here, they are so much more interesting and stylish, and more flattering too, more opportunity to hide bits if you'd like to. This was fun and interesting to watch when you live in a really cold country (Finland). I would never see all that trouble daily, but on the other hand we wear thicker shoes and jackets. :) What do you do with all the layers if you go in somewhere?
@EmmaHill

It would depend how warm it was. Most places I will take the coat off and would largely be Ok. But if it was really warm a jumper could come off too 👍🏼

Me ‘taking notes’ ok let’s try it - put on as many clothes as possible (rushes to try on what I have) ‘ok I’m gonna need to size up one or two on the outer layers... I can’t move!’ Didn’t think that through lol

I’d look like the Michelin man in so many layers but you do it very well! 🙌🏻 When I was in the air cadets as a teen we used to wear about 4 layers and thermals when out on night missions in the woods in the winter as it was baltic ❄️ I’ve never really worn thermals since but these Uniqlo tops look good. All great tips, hand warmers in gloves are also good. Lol at the condom on the head comment, got to be a slouchy beanie we don’t want to look like a member of east 17 lol 😂🤣

LOL throwback. I did get Simon some hand warmers to put in his gloves when we first met and he loved them as he used to work outside quite a bit. 🥶

Good tips once you pass the Everlane ad...I can’t handle seeing another Everlane ad from my favorite KZfaqrs...Everlane, please stop

I wish you wouldn’t advertise Everlane so much. They charge so much for tax and duties and if you make a mistake on the size they don’t refund you the tax or duties on the items you return. To find this information you have to dig around for it and I don’t think many people would so be warned! I ended up having to pay £130 for 1 pair of jeans because of this!

A traditional flat ‘at is also warm and isn’t as itchy as a beanie - that presses your hair against your head and it’s torture. Traditional woollen work socks are also warm, as are Dubarry boot liners/Hunter welly socks if your knee boots are loose enough around the calf. Alpacas are so sweet and their breath does not smell if you get close to them.

This is making me want to book a winter trip to Canada. I know it's weird but I loooove having to wear this many layers, it makes me feel organised and like I've got my life together. I always tuck my thermal top into my leggings - it's not the most attractive look but my god is it comfy. Oh and big knickers are a must. Basically, I think I must be the only 26 yr old that likes dressing like a practical Grandma

Thanks for the tips! Im from Canada and we have to layer a bunch to be able to walk outside during the winter. Have you tried base layers from Ice breaker or Smart wool? Way much better than Uniqlo heattech because they’re 100% wool. I find heattech not breathable as the base layer.

The most common type is Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), comprising nearly 90% of all cotton produced around the world. The remaining 10% is made up of two higher-quality cottons - Egyptian cotton and pima cotton. Both of these cottons are actually the same species of “extra-long staple cotton” (Gossypium barbadense), with longer, silkier individual cotton fibers for a premium fabric that is both luxuriously soft and incredibly strong. While Egyptian cotton, when it’s authentic, is a premium fabric that originates in the Nile River Valley, pima cotton has a decidedly American story. Early 1900s that the U.S. Department of Agricultural got involved, working with the Pima tribe of Arizona to perfect this young crop. It was in honor of these pioneering farmers that the USDA named the American extra-long staple variety “pima cotton." , but , much like coffee, cashmere or wine, the quality of cotton varies greatly. Thanks to ideal growing conditions, extra-long staple length and hand harvesting, Peruvian pima cotton is the world’s finest, prized for its exceptional durability, softness and brilliant luster.
