Wow! I wouldn't have known you spent the majority of your life in Japan. Your English is so good. You even have the vocal inflections of Americans or Maybe Canadians in your age group. Congratulations on passing the B-2 DELLE.

Wow, I just assumed you grew up in the US. It shows that kids have a window, maybe up to 6, to absorb the sounds of language so they can present as a native speaker. I find the accent side of language learning really interesting. How about a video on how you developed your Spanish accent, which sounds good to me btw?

yeah I totally agree! my accent definitely comes from the fact that I grew up hearing/speaking English from a super young age. for my Spanish, first of all thank you, but tbh it's only bc the Japanese pronunciation is reeeally similar to Spanish😅 so I really just got lucky with that one haha

I SWEAR IM NOT TRYING TO BRAG but! I came to live here in Belgium when I was around 14, went to school, and basically, all my life, friends, and entertainment became "french". Now at 20 years old, no one believes me anymore when I say that I didn't speak any french before the age of 14. There's also this literally 25 years old (KZfaqr and comedian) called Paul Tyler who speaks French like a native. So I think it's more about living the language rather than growing up with it (though it helps)

I would say it depends on the person and exposure but all the ideas I see is about the age of 12 when you'll keep your accent

thanks emi! i just wanted to say i relate so much to this video... i grew up in the us but my parents are mexican, i always spoke spanish at home but it was straight up EMBARRASSING trying to communicate with anyone else. i was so insecure about my spanish for many many years, the beat decision of my life was admitting my set backs and putting effort into learning. that's why i love this channel so much ❤

Emi, your videos are all so cute! I've enjoyed watching a lot of them since I'm studying Spanish too:) After studying French! And am 日米haafu! I just wanted to say that I relate so much to not feeling confident with your "mother tongue". I grew up mostly in the states, so I'm much more confident in English than Japanese. I only spoke Japanese with my mom too, so I also had the vocab of a 7 year old until I met some Japanese people my age in college. No one truly understands how much time I've spent trying to keep up with my Japanese native friends who are still in Japan and have a full Japanese education while I was stuck in the Americanド田舎 without any Japanese acquaintances. Most of my entertainment outlets are in Japanese haha(sprinkled with some French&Spanish now). I still struggle a bit with the news and long classics...and kanjiTT Your video made me consider taking the JLPT since you took the 英検. You know, I always felt like I had to be perfect in both languages to be fully recognized as a real haafu(whatever that is). Ridiculous expectations really! But you overpass them, your English is beautiful. Sorry for the long rant, good luck with future videos! And thank you for making me feel like I'm not alone in being haafu, in between languages and the labels.

woooow you're literally the reversed version of me! I totally feel you. I feel like we give ourselves such high standards because we always feel like we 'should' aim for & get to a native level. when in reality, that's just ridiculous... but also it feel like a big deal bc it's something so closely tied to our identity and culture.

I'm in the same boat, my mother is American and my father is Mexican. I lived a couple months in Mexico and almost went to school there. I was nearly conversational in Spanish as a child, until I suddenly was forced to stop speaking Spanish around 5th and 6th grade. I'm still trying to learn Spanish to this day, and it's rough since all my Mexican friends and family assume I'm fluent, but I'm actually not. It's nice to see another biracial/bicultural person though :) your journey inspires me to keep learning. Lingoda sounds like a really cool resource, so I gotta check that out!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I had a similar experience with Spanish growing up. I was born in Madrid and my caregiver only spoke Spanish, my mother was ill during my first two years of life so I spent 8 plus hours a day with the caregiver while she was in and out of the hospital. I learned Spanish first with a little English. My dad is an American but part of his family is French and Spanish and he knew a little of both but was not fluent. When we moved to the states I found people wouldn't practice Spanish with me, there was a stigma with Latina speakers, they wanted to practice their English. So I grew up studying grammar from books on my own until high school even then the courses were formal and grammar structured and really didn't focus on the conversational language. I have spent thousands of hours and lots of money, over the course of my life on Spanish courses and I would get A's but then forget soon after I stopped being in class. I would listen to Telemundo on Cable and could understand a lot but to form thoughts and speak it just didn't flow. Recently I had planned a trip to Spain to walk the Caminos (old pilgrim roman road routes a St James burial site)for 2020. I started just practicing travel Spanish phrases. I ended up going in the fall of 2021. I was frustrated when I realized I was back to speaking like a 5 to 7-year-old most of the time because when I was tired or half-awake I couldn't remember how to say things. Then I went 11 days without speaking any English. My speaking skills greatly improved. Being forced to communicate with both natives and foreigners who spoke just a little Spanish, but no English sped it up. Now 7 months later I found I was starting to forget again, which brought me to youtube and you. Long story long, I am now incorporating some of your wisdom and others too. I just discovered Language Transfer. I recently discovered Language Regulator for Chrome--it's a free extension. It translates videos with a script on some you tube videos into many languages. It works on youtube videos and on NetFlix videos. The script part has setting to put at different levels of learning and it will highlight words for you based on the beginner to advanced learning--if you hover over it you can click and it will give you pronunciation and a dictionary meaning of the word. I watch shows and movies on Netflix I like, including family movies since there is so much everyday language in them(think Disney jungle book). If the show is in English, the first time I watch it I put the subtitles in either Spanish or French. Then I watch it again but change the audio to Spanish or French. There are a few Turkish series I watch and put English and Spanish subtitles while I listen in Turkish. I have always loved languages but thought I just didn't have a good enough memory or the "gift" to be fluent because I tried so hard with Spanish, Latin, and Greek(I was studying medicine) I could read and write in them, but speaking wasn't working. So again Thank you for your candor from an eternal student in her second childhood :0)

...I just came across your channel, watching your 1year of learning Spanish video (really impressive by the way). But when I saw the title of this one, I was like..: wait... is she not an English native speaker? ...Thus you will soon be fluent in 3 languages. Impressive. Hope you won't stop there. Add mine and you'll be my hero, lol. I just started learning Spanish since I don't have much to learn in Italian anymore, so I subscribed. I hope I do as good as you. It's supposed to be easier for French speakers (it better be because I already have to handle a language monster, no need for a second one). ...Good luck in learning French!

Omg I can relate to you so much about having the pronunciation but lacking in vocabulary, I never went to church but spoke with my grandma on the phone quite frequently and there was definitely a period in my life where I didn’t understand what she was saying. My English started really improving after I got into high school and now at 27 years old, I can say that my Japanese and English are almost at equal level, at least conversation wise (and I do work in English as well).

I am full Chinese and I transferred from a normal Chinese school to an international school when I was in ninth grade. Everyone else was fluent in English and somehow unfairly expected me to sound native as well. I also had this pressure to speak and sound the same as those around me perhaps because I felt like I was often judged for not being able to speak English fluently. I felt super embarrassed about my accent and my level at the time and became extremely nervous/self-conscious about not knowing words/not having a perfect native accent. But later I realized that it’s super normal for me to not be fluent at the time because I grew up learning and speaking Chinese. Thanks for sharing your story Emi 🌷✨

I just subscribed the Kaiti Yoo a couple weeks back, love her channel so far, I was obsessed with Tiffany Ferg's videos a couple years ago and now I want to get back into them again, and Danny Gonzalez and Kurtis Connor are my go-to comfort/comedy channels! Idk why but sometimes I forget KZfaqrs watch other KZfaqrs so its so cool to see where our interests are the same!! I loved hearing this perspective as someone who is a native English speaker, and when I first watched your videos I didn't know English wasn't your first language until you mentioned it at one point! Hoping for the day where I can sound the same with Spanish haha 😅

WOW this is so so helping… I picked up English when I was very young (I went to an international nursery school) and that was the only time I got educated in English. I reckon I still got the same insecurity you mentioned, I feel very anxious when I’m around Brits or Americans, and writing in English always gives me sort of cold shiver since I feel like I’m just making the lack of grammar skill tangible. I think I am now in the phase of gradually overcoming the insecurity and surely this video helped me a lot. Arigatou Emi 😁 love your content

You used the word reckon so you'll fit right in! Most Native speakers struggle with the grammar, as well. Someone corrects me on something at least once a month. Your writing is great. On a colloquial level I don't think any errors would be noticed.

Love your videos. Pushes me to keep learning Spanish so I can better communicate with my grandparents. My grandparents are from Mexico, my dad is fluent, but none of the grandkids were taught Spanish for fear of bullying, from what I was told. Are you Latin American and Japanese? Do you have Mexican blood, or do you just focus more on Mexican Spanish?

How did I learn English? Answer: I just watched the youtuber Mumbo Jumbo. kzfaq.info I had English lessons in school, but they weren't really doing it for me. The one other I did, was reading some books I had already read in my Native language in English and then reading new books I had not read before in English too.
