You're right, Chicago rose but I guess it is the way of the beginning or the non learner. We constantly question whether we have enough time, energy, or skill to do something like this, when actually see someone do something like this. All of us can do a lot of what he did and get great results.The problem is, we have to do the work and stop comparing ourselves to people.

Not trying to minimize his progress because learning Spanish for 20 days and reaching the level he did is very impressive in and of itself! I feel that "speaking" and "being fluent" in a language are thrown around too often though on KZfaq without really paying too much attention to the actual competence required to call yourself fluent. At level B2, you are considered to have a "basic fluency", and while you'll still make grammatical mistakes, you will need to be able to discuss a wide range of topics with a native speaker at this level. Anyone who has learned a language knows that during the initial period of learning a foreign language, you seem to progress rapidly as you see yourself go from 0 to being able to have a basic conversation in that language. It's going from B1 to B2 that takes far more time and then going from B2 to C1 that seems to take an immense amount of time. Speaking about learning languages is a pretty common topic for polyglots when they're proving their skills and for good reason! It's a topic that comes up quite often with native speakers and it's why many have reached a 'fluent' level in terms of discussing their language learning journey. It was a huge shock to me when I learned my first foreign language. I felt so confident speaking about a select few topics (e.g. how and why I learned Portuguese, my background, etc.) and then when I arrived in Brazil, it was incredibly humbling to see how few topics I was actually fluent in. I wish that more KZfaqrs that claim they're fluent in a language actually provide proof (i.e. a certification) because that's a pretty big claim to make. It seems to discourage a ton of language learners who haven't made nearly the same amount of progress speaking Spanish for a few years, for example. It's fairly easy to appear fluent in a select few topics, prepare your script, and then upload a video speaking a number of languages. Sorry for rambling ;)

ah ok! I didn't think about that because I am a month in and can say things but when a native speaker begins speaking, I cannot comprehend fast enough.

I am from Holland and here we are taught English from lower school, so I am learning spanish in my free time now. It takes indeed a lot of time and effort, but it's worth it. I don't believe you can speak fluently in 20 days, he memorized phrases for this video and practiced it. I bet if you talk about a random subject in your kitchen or objects in detail he couldn't do it, or perfectly translate articles from El País for example. That level of Spanish is much harder. It's not possible to learn a language this quick, but maybe i have a different definition of fluently though..

no not me, he's memorised a lot of common sentences and phases that can easily get by, it's impossible to be fluent in 30 days, fluency isn't just about being able to speak and understand certain words.if you told him to not speak or listen for 2/3 month and then made him translate a brand new tv show or radio show, he wouldn't understand majority of it, thats not fluent.

Im only comforted by the fact that I know FOR DAMN SURE he could never understand my Mexican friends speaking at normal speed. Speaking and understanding are different and that’s something I have to remind myself and encourage myself with all the time.

julio vazquez as a native spanish speaker, his accent is very good for 30 days. He did mess up a few conjugations, but on the topic of speaking fast, it’s just very common to speak quickly. The speed he’s speaking at is normal, and it’s what you’ll hear when you go to Spain.

Existe en todos los ámbitos; deportes, idiomas, profesiones, etc. Los chinos cuando le oyen hablar, alucinan, porque en muchos casos ni ellos mismos lo saben hablar así. Y para un angloparlante hablar el español es muy muy complicado, cuanto más si hablamos de un solo mes de estudio. Me parece que tiene una capacidad impresionante. No hay que quitarle méritos. Por mas talento que tenga alguien en cualquier cosa, si no se exige al maximo, no lo puede llevar al siguiente nivel, sobr todo en los deportes. Yo soy preparador fisico y se de lo que te hablo, he discutido cientos de veces con gente que confunde talento con trabajo duro, y la verdad que el segundo supera por muy lejos al primero. De hecho el talento es algo muy insignificante, a comparacion de lo mucho que hay que trabajar para lograr cualquier cosa, sobre todo un idioma. Tener la capacidad de estudiar mucho, es algo que se adquiere con la practica, solo hay que tener constancia y tiempo.

The DLI has Spanish, which is one of the easiest languages for English speakers as 36 weeks (9 Months) and at 7 hrs. a day, that is about 1260 hrs. of in class study. That does not include the encouraged use of the language outside of class and eventual immersion after the course. This is to reach fluency. This is one of the most intense ways to acquire a language, for actual fluency, since it determines if people can attain a career for their livelihood. This KZfaqr Xiaoma would not pass an interview, nor would he be able to go to school if the medium of instruction was solely in Spanish. In Canada there is even a program for immigrants to take a course about three months long and also seven hours a day for French. That is considered just the basics of conversational language to find a menial job and not a career.

Ehhh, I mean I got fluent in spanish in about 4 months and I barely spent 1 hour a day on it. Yes, the order is different, but him speaking a lot and getting corrected isnt bs. Also, in this video, he could speak fluently, we didnt see him understanding fast spanish. Not to mention, he was already listening to spanish with his tutors. So yeah, its not so unbelievable.

Ikr there is a big difference between being able to communicate knowing the words that make up 70% of conversations and being fluent (that I would say has an objective definition which is around c1/c2. fluency might be subjective concept but the actual fluency is only reached with consistency little by little day by day, without living in the specific country or having someone to talk to in that language it's slow porcess.

Frankly speaking here, his Spanish isn't on point. He utilizes vocabulary swiftly, but his accent is far off. Not just the pronunciation of the individual letters, but the stress of syllables. Aside from that, Xiaomanyc has improved so much over the last few weeks.

Probably not. The previous video where he was on zoom with the native speakers is probably where he is at still for the most part. I do agree about the splicing and rehearsing to say these sentences quickly being very misleading about how fluent he actually is and can be discouraging to people like me who are still learning and have been learning much longer. But, we still must commend him for his consistency and effort in this short amount of time. He still understands a lot and takes the effort to practice with people consistently. That is what messes me up, I don't use Spanish and am too embarrassed to speak it with native speakers often, which I'll have to get over if I want to get any better. So I still commend him and admire that tenacity he has. But don't let this discourge you who are still learning. Your journey is your own and how much, how fast. And how efficiently you learn is all up to you and your own effort! Keep going, we got this 💪🏾!!

agreed.. i already see the difference between my english and my german and i've studied both (my 1st language is dutch) however since i basically grew up with english all around i quickly understood it without any schooling in it. for german i only got it in school and apart from the things that are very similar to dutch (wich can also make it quite confusing because for example the dutch word for sea is the german word for lake and vice versa) but because i've only had it in school despite my aptitude for learning languages it's at the level of a primary schooler because the way we were taught wasn't a useful way for me.. if you throw a book to me and tell me to learn from that i'll read it then my brain will almost instantly dump half of it out.. but if i actually get to hear and speak the language i'll easily pick up sentences and loose words.. i've already learned a suprising amout of japanese and korean from just watching anime and k-drama's.. even movies.. to a point where a while back i was watching the grudge and there is this once scene in one of the movies where a schoolgirl is called to (i think) the principal and the principal asks her where the missing girls went because she was like their friend and she is just like sorry i don't know i haven't seen them since yesterday (or something along those lines basically it was a while back and i'm bad at remembering the specific things someone said.. i think in pictures) and i literally paused the movie and went huh.. there were no subtitles but i understood it without issue..

He's very very dedicated to it too, which is something people have a really hard time with. It's definitely impressive how much time he can dedicate to learning like this. I do believe you need a certain mindset to be able to do stuff like this though, which not everyone naturally has. If you can see things like he does and see value in spending this much time with language like he does someone can absolutely learn to the level he does!

Speaking while learning is important. Most people try to skip that part, but to me is the best when learning a language.

I agree. There’s no way he would make such few grammar mistakes. There’s a cut after every sentence practically. Seems disingenuous, albeit, what he has achieved is still impressive. The pronunciation is pretty awful and listening comprehension isn’t really demonstrated whatsoever.

A lot of youtube videos are scripted actually. He could be reading off a prompter, but If you watch his other videos, you'll know that his level of Spanish is actually about the same as this video, so even if he's reading a script, the fact that he's able to read it and speak it so fast speaks for itself. Most native spanish speakers cant even memorize or read anything this fast in their native language

@@mao3057 That's dumb. Give a Spanish speaker his script and ask him/her to practice it and I assure you they'll speak faster, pronounce better, correct his script's mistakes and they won't say "yo" every sentence
