This is so wild. Your grandparents haven’t lived in Germany for so long and probably not used the language much in the last decades. But even before they said where they’ve lived, l could tell that your grandpa sounded northern and your grandma has a lightly Badisch flavored pronunciation 😄.

Hahah it is crazy. They speak with each other in German a little, and talk on the phone with their relatives a few times a year, but other than that, I was also shocked.

Loved this video! During covid I finally succeeded in applying for my German passport, and as a result I've been using Goethe / Lingoda and calling my Oma every day or two to practice speaking. This video was an excellent source of motivation! Also I have a trip to Munich at the end of this month, and my friend and I are planning some day trips around your videos! My wife and I really enjoy your work!

That is so cool you learned German for your grandma. She probably doesn't speak or think a lot in German, you realize that a lot is translated from English to German. In fact at times your German sounds more "natural", while she is using expressions that Germans would typically use, but the sentence structure and some things are literal translations from English. Most surprisingly the German of your Grandpa - though German is not his first language - sounds very natural and not so much "translated". This is mind-blowing. If I didn't know I would have thought your Grandpa is German and not your Grandma. Still can't wrap my head around how good his German is and how natural it comes to him. But it seems he is a very talented multi-language speaker, from what he said.

Thanks! Yeah, she has lived in the US since she was 19, basically only speaking English. She also had a massive heart attack 20 years ago, and it really crossed a ton of language wires. I am also mind blown by him. hahaha. He‘s just so gifted. I‘m very jealous.

@@NearFromHome well, I guess you inherited some of that from him, your German, even if not perfect, but I believe you haven’t studied it for a long time and haven’t lived in Germany for a long time - is very good. Very nice pronunciation! I think you are doing a wonderful job. Give it some more time and practice and I have no doubt you’ll be great! After all it is not such an easy language.

In northern Germany, the dialect Platt German is spoken. Bavarian dialects in Bavaria and Austria. Standard German is more commonly found in the dialects of central Germany. But everyone should also be able to speak standard German, including the Swiss people. in Switzerland and Austria there are some alternative German words. But the locals know both variants. Engl. - German - Swiss German bicycle = Fahrrad = Velo hospital = Krankenhaus = Hospital tram = Straßenbahn = Tram

As a German native born far after WWII I'm very curious about how your Oma perceived living in Germany at that time. Was she treated as a German, how much did the German citizens know about what was going on with deportation, did everyone adore H*tler?

Hahaha I'm from Bremen, have lived in Bremerhaven as well and my Grandparents speak a mixture of High German and Plattdeutsch. I can very much relate to sometimes being clueless what people are talking about around here. This also happens with Bavarian, but Bavaria isn't part of Germany anyway. From our perspective, thats already part of Italy. 😂 It's mainly elderly people and Frisians left speaking the dialect nowadays. So you better beware of old Frisians. ;)

Well done C. It was also great hearing the Story of your grandparents. I can't barely imagine how your great grandparents must have felt being on a family holiday and suddenly being trapped in that country as the war had started. Your grandma must have had a lot of stick being Amarican in a Germany where the inhabitnts fought that they were better than anybody else and that they are part of some master-race, an idle and rather stupid idea considering that Germany is right in the centre of Europe.
