I was thinking of living in a car. A lot of people think I'm crazy but, I don't like being stuck in one place, I don't like sharing my space, and I want to save money to travel. I could see a lot of the world for the price I'm paying in rent.

I have friends that are truck drivers, and they told me that the safest place to sleep is at a truck stop parking area. People are safe overnight because of an unwritten truckers code to be alert for danger to all who are staying there overnight. Also there are showers available for a small fee. This may not suit everyone but I {female} drove trucks for a while and was very grateful for these amenities.

If you get enough sleep, and it's restful, most bodies can withstand certain short-term hardships. Add on 'healthy' exercise, the body becomes even more resilient. Next: diet/nutrition. Eat clean and not excessively. It doesn't have to be fancy. Our thoughts: totally within our control, so think healthy and supportive thoughts. We just need to learn to be conscious about them, and then forgiving and gracious to ourselves (and of course, others).

Dude I respect everything you do, living out of a car is very very difficult. Since I was 17 I lived out of my 2000 Hyundai Elantra hatchback for 3 YEARS! I was homeless and it was the hardest tipping point of my life. For showers? I would go surfing every morning and use the beach showers with board shorts. Sleeping during the day was like sleeping in a sauna, sleeping at night was freezing cold. Even in California it was very difficult maintaining hygiene and comfort.

I used to live in my car back in USA, for 3 years, i went to the 24 gym after work, took shower, drove a bit, go back to the building garage near where i work, had family meals in the resturant, just eat left overs now and then, park all night, the garage gates open at night, so free all day, work 14 hours a day, days off i meet my old men and chill a bit, and came to south asia, and never look back to my life in American, at least here i have my own place and my life.

I am going to be living in my car beginning in April or May --- definitely a choice for me. I can choose to spend all my money to rent an apartment and sit home on my days off because all of my income is spent. (Depressing). I live in a big city and have a good paying job, but it is expensive here. I can move to a different state to lower expenses, but I want to be near my grandchild who is almost 2 years old. I have Planet Fitness membership, that I rarely go to and work out ( probably related to mild depression). I believe that using the multiple locations here to shower will also encourage me to also work and and be more active. I am older (57), but have many years to keep working. If I decide I cannot handle being in my car, I can always just get an apartment again. I have always been a bit of a gypsy, so I am excited about this. My daughter thinks I am crazy.

OMG, that is almost me. Planet Fitness is a great thing to have but take care, been there, done that and in a city? hard to sleep unless you can get zzzzs in your office. That is the thing I remember most. Also, I am assuming you will be using your daughters address for legal purposes? very important to have a legal fixed address for your license, insurance, etc. I was forced to do this 35 years ago with 3 small children, pregnant, and with a cat I was allergic to, you never forget doing by hardship, but yeah, always the gypsy,( before then), now that my kids don't need me? I want to. I want a van though, need the shower, bathroom at 3am thing, when you don't feel like going to Planet Fitness, and don't forget the National Parks maps, :) see this country on the vacation while you can.

I've made it very comfortable and I sleep well at night, and my friend let's me pull my car in his heated 2 bay garage to sleep which I'm very thankful for.. but feel like I'm being a burden. Like you said it's great to have someone that can let you stay in their driveway, especially with it getting cold here in CT I'm very thankful in my time of struggle. And I'm able to shower/cook inside his house. It could be way worse I'm thankful to have such a good friend but it's not his house so he cant actually take me in. I have a Honda Element with more than two hundred thousand miles on it. Because I have sleep apnea, I have trained myself to sleep sitting upright. I travel with my 150 pound Newfoundland dog. He is super friendly but when it is just the two of us, if someone approaches our vehicle, he becomes a bit growly. I only travel the hot states in the winter time. But the main thing I do when tooling down the highway, is I listen to high class works of literature. Especially the plays of William Shakespeare. I have memorized the roles of King Lear and Sir John Falstaff. I have listened to Shakespeare so much, I can speak with an iambic cadence.

Good sleep really is most important for your health while doing this. If you are sleep deprived, every other part of your life suffers. When I lived in a car full time, I'd always find a shady spot and take an afternoon nap. My best advice is to stay away from other urban/car campers. When there are too many in one area, people get nervous and the police show up. Save yourself the hassle and try to be as stealth as possible.

I slept in a car once a few years ago with one of my homies after a concert since we couldn’t find a spot or hotel because of timing. At first it was unusual since it’s something I don’t see myself doing. Now I can see how beneficial it can be. Especially for those who are adventurous and enjoys the outdoors such as camping.

Car camped for over a year here in Maui w/my Jetta at the time. But been paying $1100 a month in rent for awhile now after the fact & decided I'm gonna go back to car camping in my new ride. 18' cruze. Gonna do it for another year & save 1k+ a month. Helps to be real minimal(clothes, food, etc..) Get rid of alot of shit you don't need or store it. Good luck to everyone tryin it out for the first time. It's not easy, but definitely worth it. The sun shades are too much hassle! Look at car curtains on amazon, there’s really nice looking ones you can easily slide back like on a limo or an actual house window... I’d recommend a cooling gel memory foam matter that’s custom cut out to your entire trunk & front cabin... Install a small battery powered Tv in your car for entertainment, install some fancy lights in your car, too. Take out back seat. Passenger and front seats can be fully extended backwards to create a flat surface in the entire front cabin in certain cars.

Just started living in my truck. Need the bed for my dirtbike so I'm living in the cab. It's small but I got a plan to take out the passenger seat and single rear bench seat in the back and I'll have plenty of room to stretch out. Doing it to save money cause rent here is so damn pricey!! So I'm building myself a good pile of cash.

There were definitely some cold nights! I ended up using a heated blanket for my feet and legs while I just added layers to my upper body: thermal>hoody>leather jacket & beanie. And yes, maybe so. But depending on the type of van, there may be better insulation for that specific purpose. Good question!

Honda Accords are quite rooming inside the cabin. You sacrifice the smaller trunk space for a bigger cabin. Sleeping inside one should be more than enough room to sleep in.
@TaylorMoats
