Another great and helpful video, Jon! I've been a gigging musician for years but I'd say that is all but gone and I should have a look at different musical money-making ideas... Luckily I've also been writing for years! Salutations from threatening snow, Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️

Thanks for another interesting video Jon. I'm at that 3 year mark now and starting to see the backend pay off. I only got my first royalty statement back in September 2020, but the other week got the next one (I'm with BMI btw) and started seeing more tracks featured along with the older ones. It's important people understand this is a long game business and to enjoy the ride. One track I wrote just over 2 years ago (Nov 2018, just as I was finding my feet) was aired in Jan 2020 and I got paid in Jan 2021 for that one track which will go on making income for some time yet hopefully as it was a show on Bravo about Housewives... which are apparently quite popular?! Keep up the good work sir!

Thanks, Dex. It absolutely is a long game. I understand why it's not for everyone, but I'm glad I took the time to write even when I wasn't seeing immediate returns.

Great Video Jon... I do the same thing & I also teach the bass guitar for a couple of hrs in the evening... I remember thinking the same thing about 2 years into it, doing all this work and composing SO much music and not seeing any money results & it really got me down! HOWEVER I stuck with it and I'm glad I did :) Royalty Cheques are a VERY nice thing to get each month & inspiring to Keep on writing... Thanks again for the video and sharing ... Grant...

Excellent. I'm on a similar journey with library music. I'm lucky that I live in a country where the exchange rate to the dollar is high so even small placements in films and tv shows in Europe and the States mean that once it's converted to rands the money goes a little bit further. Thanks for the video and the awesome channel.

Great video (as always). All my music money comes from sync. I’m signed up for BMI, but I’ve always been scared to list my tracks for fear that it would somehow interfere with the sync deals I’ve made. It sounds like my fears are unfounded?
@JonMeyer
@JonMeyer 3 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on the specifics of your deal. Performance royalties get tricky when you try and put the same song in multiple places (non-exclusive). All of my tracks are in exclusive libraries, meaning the publisher owns the content, making the performance royalties side of things much easier to track. This can be confusing. I might need to make a follow up video.

@@JonMeyer I hope I'm not over stepping, but I am trying to break into the sync market and I am wondering what my next steps should be. I have invested in tools, a web presents, and I'm writing everyday to get better, and know I feel like I need to get some help. Should I seek out a publishing company, and if so how should I begin that process? By the way, love you videos and your music. I have all your Piano Book samples (my favorite are your drum samples, very useful)? If I have over stepped i truly understand.

Here in South Africa we have a really tough time with SAMRO and the copyrighting of our music content for royalties where it be Sync or Performance or Mechanical Royalties... is there a way that I as a South African composer can register my my compositions for sound/music libraries that are American based? How would I go about this, what are the requirements to copyright your music under Ascap or BMI?

@@JonMeyer I probably misspoke. Do you release your songs on both Spotify and Sync Licensing simultaneously. Or do you have a completely different way of composing for both environments.

This is so great. I'm interested in knowing if you had a strategy when starting your 800+ track journey. Did you set a goal, like a song a week? Also, how much of that time was spent dissecting and studying other "library focused" tracks?
@JonMeyer
@JonMeyer 3 жыл бұрын
At first I was writing albums with themes suggested by the library. Nowadays I have a little more creative control with the music I write, but I still rely heavily on suggestions from the library. At first I listened to a ton of tracks from other libraries. Now I pay more attention to what I'm actually hearing on the radio, tv, movies, etc.

Thanks Jon. What's the scheme for actually getting your music to get picked up? Do you do some type of promoting, or do you just submit your music to the libraries and publishing group and hope for the best? Does having the KZfaq videos seem to help drive your music to get picked?
@JonMeyer
@JonMeyer 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the KZfaq channel has much to do with it. I've developed a good relationship with my publishers over the years which helps with new opportunities.
