Hi my loves!
A very common question that I've got lately is about my painting technique and how I make paint out of natural materials like stones, sand, ashes, charcoal, mud etc.
So in this video I wanted to open up the door into my little painting world and show you step by step how I make my own paint with these natural materials.
Painting is one of my biggest passions in life, and since I started making my very own paints from pigments in nature I really felt how something "clicked" and I really found something that felt completely right in my heart. The first week I started experimenting with making my own paint I just couldn't stop paint. I locked myself into the studio and felt spellbound by these beautiful colors and textures from nature.
And I keep learning and exploring every time I paint, and keep experimenting with different materials from nature.
I really hope I could give you all some inspiration and some answers to all your questions about my painting technique! :)
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING! ♥

When I first started painting a few years ago, I didn't have any paint, but I wanted to get started immediately. So I took what I could find at home: spices, coffee, tea and made watercolours with them. It was an incredible experience. It wasn't perfect, because I didn't have the right paper, but what I felt was inimitable. This video reminds me that maybe it's time to start playing and exploring again. ❤️❤️❤️

Would it still be environment friendly if companies produced paints like this on a large scale? I don't think so, because it means natural resources being used up on a large scale. Paper is natural but deforestation isn't environment friendly.

They do. Umber is named after Umbria's dirt in Italy. Same with sienna etc. Many lightfast intense colors are synthesized but only made available after technical advancements in the Victorian era. One majordrawback of using dye pigments ( from campanies and blueberries alike): is that the color fades. Using Blueberries especially will fade really quick. Though usibg sand in your paintings for texture is something out of Rembrandt's playbook. His médium was sometimes over 10 (?) Percent sand.

What I find so beautiful about her videos is she’s not in anyway trying to get you somewhere, or to live in a certain way, she’s just showing us how she lives, and that alone is enough to make you remember that part in you that you lost connection with. And she’s reminding you that you can find that part back. The resisting voice in me to acknowledge I want to change my life, and go and live closer to my heart, is deminished everytime I watch a video of her. I just don’t know yet what steps to take. I’m scared of being alone I guess

This video made me cry. I have always had a love for art, since childhood. One time, over twenty years ago, my son was in grade two. He was given the assignment of making a project out of 100 things. Some kids did cereal, pennies, paper, and stuck them on a board. My son and I decided to do 100 things from nature. Together we collected branches, berries, leaves, soil, all kinds of organic matter. Not only did we have such a wonderful time working on this project together, but this project ignited a fire of inspiration inside of me. To this day I have a burning obsession of using organic matter in my work. I cannot currently live this dream that you are, Jonna. But it is so beautiful and inspiring to see you do so. Thank you so much for your wonderful words of inspiration.

Where I live is one of the most expensive places to live in the world and we are just working poor people.

I've been painting warhammer miniatures for about 6 years now and I love looking back at my first mini I've painted when I was 16 years old and look at my latest and see how far I've come in improvements. I've never thought about making my own paint but this is definitely very interesting Jonna. Think I'll give it a wurl sometime, thanks for the video and inspiration! :D

Nice natural ingredients so wonderful! Good for your location. Glad to know about blue berries maybe break down the pigment with cooking and vinager and oil to keep it from turning brown as you used fresh fruit or use dehydrated and ground it and put clear medium mix for your blue berries IAM sure there is a chemical breakdown for them try again afterall it presented itself in a beautiful color. Try again . Don't give up. I love that natural look. Very NICE! Texture also. Something I can think about for future months. For bigger canvas use. Thank you for sharing your love of painting with natural resources. AWESOME! So Native!!! Be one with the Earth! 🙂🌍🌎🌏Our planet Earth shares our love of Beauty!

Have you thought about trying egg yolk as a binder with your natural pigments and a few drops of vinegar when mixing so the egg does not mold? This kind of binder causes the colors to become light reflecting with a beautiful depth when layering that is not possible with acrylic. I think you will like it. You could start with the lightest color first and layer darker on top. The light shows through and natural light reflects into the paint on the canvas and reflects back up and gives the paint a richness that is not possible with acrylic binders... Also this kind of paint binder lasts hundreds of years on the canvas or board and will not fade like acrylic. (You can see the way to mix that by looking up egg tempera icon painting) Happy painting!

I'm about to try this natural painting too,and I was about to use egg yolk.My father told me once that painters and decorators has been using it in old days that made paint more durable and non-cracking. I've seen using also weat flover paste. Will see how it all works

@@sollayegi7041 I've heard about the wheat paste too. Could you maybe share your experience, after you've tried it? My problem is that my paint experiments usually don't work out, becouse the pigments sink to the bottom due to the liquidity of the paint.

Fantastic, Jonna! I'm probably old enough to be your grandmother. When I was young, people called me a naturalist because of my love for nature. I used to go into the woods, dig up unusual plants and bring them home to plant and grow. I also painted. I used tempura, oils, and acrylics. I never thought of using natural pigments and wow, that is spectacular! I wish I'd thought of it! I'm also of Nordic ancestry. I think that, just possibly, if we could go back enough generations, we'd find a connection! All I can suggest to you is to use your youth to create all you can now. I tried to do that because I thought sometimes older people's hands don't work so well. Here I am: old. My hands don't work as well, my eyes don't work as well....etc. I enjoy you and I enjoy your lovely, lovely work. Love to you Jonna from Jonna.

@Names Last names. Thank you for sharing about Thang ka, I'll look into it. When I started my lessons on the Academy of Art, in 1973, I began to long for the old art teaching system, with master-journeyman-apprentice, where one could learn how to use natural pigments and other materials, such as egg white and oil, to make one's own paint. In those times, artificial paints didn't exist. I'm sure those natural minerals offer beautiful colours. They're vibrant, alive.
