How I Mix My Paint with Pouring Medium

Hello Friends! Today I'm pouring a big canvas and while I was mixing all my paint I thought I would show you how I do it. I'm using my Golden's Payne's Grey full bodied paint with Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish, some water and Floetrol.
I love the little strainer I use for Floetrol, its wonderful! They arent expensive and really make a big difference!
I wanted to have multiple cups of a couple of my colors, so rather than mix each one individually, I mixed a full cup of paint (as opposed to half a cup), then poured half of it into another cup, then I added the Floetrol to both cups.. easier, because now I know they are the same color and consistency. Time saver!
I've been using the Gloss Medium & Varnish lately because I've been doing straight pours, and when I torch the pour the Liquitex really makes some gorgeous cells.
There is no silicone in any of my paints
the Hiccups 😂 that's my Sister in law
(she requested a pseudonym so I picked BamBam) LOL

Update! Several lovely people suggested I cut a square of pantyhose and secure it to the opening of the bottle with a rubberband. I have been doing that since I tried it, it's much easier than washing the strainer everytime! You can even put the lid back on the bottle once the pantyhose is on there.. No more strainer, hello pantyhose!

I just bought “Strainer screw on tops” they are exclusively for the Floetrol bottles. You just screw them on to the bottle, then of course rinse well and you are ready for the next pour! So far it works great....Got them on Amazon, the actual product is SplashNcolor Filter Cap Strainer for Floetrol Jug Black, 2-Pack.

Hi Denise! I'm glad it worked out for you! I have to wash it right away tho, or the Floetrol dries.. a good friend suggested a piece of pantyhose rubberband-ed on the spout of the bottle would do the same as the strainer and not need to be cleaned up. I may try that!

Hi! Love your pouring videos! I wanted to offer a helpful hint. When you use a spinner, use a cheap disposable shower cap (50 for $5 on Amazon) to protect the top. When that cap gets too gooky, just pull it off and put on a clean one!

Absolutely love your videos. They are so helpful. I probably watch them 4 or 5 days a week. I especially appreciate your use of different colors. I play with pour painting myself. One of the best things I discovered was to use spoons to stir my paint. When finished I just wipe the spoons off with a paper towel and give a quick rinse. Be safe !!

Thanks for this video, Mina! I was having trouble getting the effect I wanted with just paint and Floetrol. I used a bit of gel medium that I had laying around, and it's binding the paint! The dollar store has similar small strainer, going to get one. I love the laughter in your videos. Light and love, Suzie

Thank you Suzie! 🥰 A quick note about the strainer.. wash it out right away, and wipe it really well with a paper towel. Dont let the Floetrol dry in the little holes! I learned this the hard way 😕 a friend suggested some pantyhose rubberband-ed onto the top of the bottle, then there is no clean up. I might go cut up a pair of hose lol good luck to you!

Mina, I just started learning to paint last summer and have learned so much from you and I love how smooth your paintings dry. Two questions: by using the Liquitex varnish do you not have to varnish/seal it later? and 2) you paint outside all the time, I tried it outside twice so far. HOW DO YOU KEEP THE BUGS OUT OF THE PAINTING? I rescued 4 yesterday. TY for sharing your joy.

Hi there! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! There are a lot of nuances in pouring, explanations help 😉 suggestions for a newbie, hmmm.. 1. You're going to waste some paint. Dont stress about it, it's how you will learn. Put down parchment paper or garbage bags and let them dry, then use them for pretty things lol. 2. Go slow Tilt slowly. Let the paint develop. Take your time and be in the moment, don't rush thru it. 3. Think about color. Look around at color and see what goes with what, and figure out what you like. You're going to buy a lot of paint, and you will hate some of it after the first time. It's ok. (Use it as a basecoat 😉) 4. Art is cheaper and more fun than therapy. Maybe not cheaper but definitely more fun lol.. this is fun, very fun. Let yourself get dirty, play with the paint and get to know it. Mix it with water.. then medium, then another medium. You will get to know each color like old friends, and you know exactly how they like their coffee and what they like.. 5. Get a digital scale and measure. You can do the math, dont be afraid. You will feel like a mad scientist, it's fun. 6. Be prepared for your art to take over your brain. It will. It's hard to think of anything else sometimes in the beginning. Like you're in love for the first or third time 🥰 dizzy thinking about color lol **Be prepared for your art to take up a lot of space. You need somewhere that you can tilt a canvas and have paint fall off. I used a dishwasher drip pan, I put parchment paper down and poured in that in the beginning. You will also accumulate canvasses that you treasure. They need to dry somewhere level and clean, and not touching each other. This is very very important, otherwise your paint will slide off your canvas overnight. Get a level and learn to use it (it's fun too) Have a place to dry more than one because it's hard to stop if you have paint left lol That's enough for now lol have a great night! 😂🥰😉

Thank you so much for this and your videos. I love pouring but I had a problem with the ready-to-pour brands I tried. Even though they all said they were nontoxic, my face broke out in a rash and I had a headache. Some I even woke up with a cough. And this was in a well ventilated space. It was heartbreaking to think I'd have to give it up. Then I found your channel. I already use Liquitex gloss medium as the first coat of varnish on my paintings so I knew I didn't have a problem with it. Such a relief.

So now its December, and I was thinking I should watch this again to see if I do something differently now than in the video. I dont 😂 the only thing I want to mention is that I was getting ready to do a straight pour, so I wanted my paint thin (that little bit of water at the end). If I was not doing a straight pour, I would have added a little less water before the Floetrol. But I'm still mixing my paint exactly the same way now. The only other thing worth noting is that I don't use a strainer anymore, I cut a square of pantyhose and secure it to the top of the bottle. Much easier and you dont have to scrub a strainer (which was very labor intensive and not very effective). Thanks for watching guys! If you're curious what all 12 cups of paint were for, check out my 'Medallions' video 😉

@MinaVillegasArt
@MinaVillegasArt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jana! Because I like to work on bigger canvases, I use the Gloss Medium (new name) so that it dries with a beautiful luster and sheen to it, pretty much eliminating the need to apply additional Varnish (because who wants to apply varnish to a huge canvas if they don't have to??) You can apply more varnish if you want it super shiny, but usually I don't. I hope this explains it ❤ I use it on all size canvases now..

How long does the paint mix last before you pour?
@MinaVillegasArt
@MinaVillegasArt 5 жыл бұрын
I'm an impatient person lol so I usually use it right away.. but once in a while I will have some left from a pour. I simply take a larger plastic cup and put it over the top of the cup with the paint. When I'm ready to use it I stir it up a lot and maybe add some water depending.. it will last a couple of weeks like that, depending on what your microclimate is like. Dont store the cup in direct sunlight either.. I hope this helps

Hi Mina, do you think you could estimate the ratio of pouring medium to paint (based on the Golden Heavy body that you demonstrated with)? Thanks!
@MinaVillegasArt
@MinaVillegasArt 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane! I can try lol I probably had about 3 ounces of pouring medium in the cup, then I add 2 or 3 ounces of paint, depending on how thick it is. In that video I did use a lot of the Golden's Payne's Grey in that cup, but I wanted it really dark. So between the paint and pouring medium it was probably at about 5 ounces.. then I add water, a bit at a time.. it might be an ounce or two total but its hard to tell when you're dribbling it in. Now its about 6 or 7 ounces, all well combined, then I add Floetrol. Those cups are 16 ounce cups, so that means about 9 or 10 ounces of Floetrol. So that would be 2:1 Floetrol to paint & medium. So one part paint, one part pouring medium and two parts Floetrol. I hope that makes sense. But you can do it anyway you like as long as you get the right consistency. Today I did a pour without pouring medium, I just used Floetrol. That was 150 g of Floetrol, to 30 g of paint, plus a bit of water. That would be 5:1 . As long as you are at the right consistency it's all good. For the record, I'm not a fan of just Floetrol on its own. It spreads too much. My pour looked great and now 2 hours later it's all kind of expanded and spread out. Without the polymers in the pouring medium to hold its shape it just lets go and relaxes for lack of a better word lol

So your ratio is 1:1 for both the paint medium and paint that's for the heavy body medium, do you use the same ratio for all paints heavy body or fluid or is it just something you have to eyeball and figure out, I use the Elmer's glue all purpose and I know that is thicker than floetrol so I'm sure I'm going to have to use more water

Hi there! You were close! 16x20, then divide by 28.. so 16 x20=320 320 divided by 28 is 11.4 ounces needed for a 16x20

By the way I LOVE your big canevas...I tried 3 littles 2 for 16x20 inches and 12 x 24 too but my mixture was not good I don't know why and the paint was more mixe together and finish in brown color. I used glue at 70% glue/30% water in one and in the other one liquitex pouring medium 1paint/2 PM . I don't know what is my missing part ? Its not easy always !!! Thank you so much if you can respond to me at my question.

Hi Sue! Yes I have used Glue before. When I started I followed Julie Cutts recipes on my quest for perfect multi colored rings around cells lol I learned so much from her! I prefer the pouring medium I am using now, but I do use glue occasionally, mostly to thicken very thin paint. I will also add a bit to my colors if I want good separation for a ring pour. Its another tool in your toolbox 😊 have a great day!

Floetrol is actually a paint conditioner that smoothes the paint (it is not Modge Podge).. we use it to increase the volume of paint we have after it's mixed with pouring medium. There are lots of different recipes, this is one that I like most. Lately I have been using Golden's Heavy Gel Gloss and Floetrol, which gives me a thicker consistency, allowing for more control.

Hi Laura! I dont generally use silicone in my pours for a couple of reasons. First off, I dont want to clean it off my painting if I want to varnish it. Second. I love straight pours that make cells naturally. Pouring your paint from up high aerates it and churns the paint, creating bubbles which then become cells. I have used silicone, when I first started and was on the quest for perfect cells with multi colored rings, but I was using Elmer's GlueAll and water as my pouring medium. I use Floetrol and Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish now, I've moved away from GlueAll but I will use it if a color is very thin and needs some body. 99% of the time I dont use silicone

I've been using: decoart, folkart & liquitex basics, & artist loft paints. My paints do seem a little thick too. They do make a mound. I'm still kind of new, been doing this for few months. I know I need to find out what works for me, i tried many ways. I like your way lol oh I also used liquitex pm with liquitex gloss varnish & floetrol. Is that too much together? Sorry for the long msg & questions.. thanku again fir the laughs & help. You are so awesome! Enjoy your day

You have no idea how long I've wanted to see a video of mixing thick paint from a tube! I could never figure out how people were getting full cups of paint when they were only using small amounts of paint. Can you just put these into squeeze bottles if you want to keep them? Also, I had watched a video where people were saying to use Regular Elmer's glue instead of the glue all, so I have a huge jug of that. Can I use that with the paint and then fill with floetrol? It's hard to commit to one certain recipe because there are so many different ones people swear by! Thank you soooo much for sharing everything you have learned with us!
@MinaVillegasArt
@MinaVillegasArt 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie! There are so many recipes.. I'm not sure about keeping a glue based mix in a bottle, where I am it does thicken up and needs water added to get back to the right consistency..and that would be more difficult in squeeze bottle. You could mix it, put it in bottles then use it right away. As to the Elmer's.. I use GlueAll (when I do use it). The Elmer's School Glue is washable, so be aware. I know Julie Cutts has used both successfully, she uses a 70% water 30% glue mix. I have used glue and Floetrol together, it does work well and the glue helps keep colors separate and helps rings keep their shape. My issue with Glue is the sticky factor. As a Mom, I hate sticky lol it drives me nuts 😂 I dont like when I go to put my cup down and it sticks to my hand.. it's also a bit thick, like marshmallow fluff. If I choose to repour over a canvas that has a dried glue based mix on it, it cracks. Almost every time. But yes, Floetrol is the thing that fills the cup and thins the paint and pouring medium. It is a paint conditioner, which means that it thins the paint and makes it slippery so it will slide easier. It also slows the drying time of the paint so you have more time to move it around. But Floetrol is not technically a pouring medium. Pouring medium has polymers in it that bind with the paint, Floetrol does not. The thing I use GlueAll for now is thickening up thinner paints, or if I want good separation of colors. I mix the paints how I normally do, then add a little glue until it's the consistency I want. Be careful, it can look and feel thicker than it is.. Good luck to you! Happy mixing!

I can’t get over your laughter-it’s so contagious! Anyway, question, since you use high gloss varnish with your paints, do you still varnish them after the paintings have dried? I’ve ruined a few nice ones because of brush marks or air bubbles while trying to varnish the dried painting. Also,I’ve heard others say not to use more than 50-50 ratio water to paint lest the binder in the paint loses its integrity. Have you had any issues with your paintings after they’ve been dry for a while? I’m still new to pouring and am learning, so your input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Cris! The bottle I'm using says 'Liquitex Gloss Medium &Varnish ' on it.. I'm not adding any additional varnish, just what's in there. I started using it because I was hoping I wouldn't need to varnish it after it was dry if it was already in there. The things that have dried have a nice shine to them, not as much as if I had sprayed varnish on, but it's a nice old world type sheen. I may put a coat of spray varnish on, but I dont think it really needs it. So I'm happy with it and just ordered more to use as pouring medium. I'd rather paint than varnish 😂 I had a painting I absolutely loved crack with varnish, it was heartbreaking. If I don't have to take that chance I'm happy.. As to the water, I'm not using more than 50 % water, more like 20%.. I'll pay closer attention today when I'm mixing to double check (I'm kind of on autopilot when mixing lately lol I tend to get in that 'consistency ' zone and the world disappears Haha see the hiccup paint mixing video for proof lol) Everything that I've painted so far has stayed the same, I have no complaints. As to thinning the paint a lot, check out MelyD, she uses a lot water with Liquitex pouring medium.. My stuff is always thick anyway lol too thin is not my issue 😂 I hope this helps 🌞 have a beautiful day Cris

@crisphil2488
@crisphil2488 Жыл бұрын
@@brendahartstern4565 Thanks. I think that could work. I’ve also since learned that after gloss-varnishing, one could use 0000-grade steel wool (really fine) to rub over the dry surface, then apply a coat of cold wax medium using circular strokes with a clean rag, then buff with a clean and dry soft cotton cloth or even one of those blue shop towels by Scott. This will produce a nice satin sheen, having knocked down some of that high gloss as well as those brush marks. I’ve tried it on non-fluid art and it works pretty well. Of course, this might be a chore when finishing a large piece :0)

@MinaVillegasArt 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Shirley! 😂 I have made pouring medium from Elmer's GlueAll and water. I went thru a 'quest for perfect multi colored cells' bit for a few months and used primarily glue and water and sometimes Floetrol. I learned a ton about mixing and viscosity and getting to the right consistency.. I really learned how to use my scale lol Julie Cutts is a goddess Haha I love her work. When I finally got my cells with glue and silicone I went back to Floetrol and no measurements for a long time, but by then I knew about consistency. The Liquitex pouring medium is more recent for me, I've been using it primarily for the last few months, combined with Floetrol. MelyD uses the LPM in such small amounts and adds a lot more water.. watching her got me into LPM. In the last few weeks I've been using Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish, which I like a lot. When you torch it there are some really amazing cells. I dont use any silicone anymore, especially since I fell in love with straight pours 🥰 ... and now I've written you a novel lol have a great day Shirley 🦚
