How I MIX Rap Vocals (With Waves Plugins)

1. Vocal Rider - Typically i set the range up to go about +3db and about -4db and the target to pull down the volume more than let it go up (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/qnONPg )
2. DeEsser - For most singers and rappers about 7,000hz seems to work the best for most vocalists doing roughly 5-8 db of gain reduction (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/GjRqL2 )
3. Renaissance Compressor - I have the attack set to 0.50, the release at 160, ratio at 3.10, threshold set to gain reduce about 3-4 db (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/0JRO4N )
4. Q10 Equalizer - this EQ i use to take out bad resonances in the vocals, i also use it to roll off the low end and boost a bit of mid range (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/6bVq4m )
5. CLA-2A Compressor / Limiter - i set the peak reduction to about 3-5 db of reduction (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/3PmO4n )
6. API 550B - this gets tricky as every vocal i different but typically i'm boosting 3k or 5k by 2db (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/vnEbAL )
7. PuigChild Compressor - with this compressor i usually turn up the input gain to get a bit of saturation, set the time constant to 1 or 2, and gain reduce only a few db (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/Yg2oZr )
8. PuigTec EQs - once again this gets tricky as every vocal i different so i'm usually trying to add something that the vocal need after all of this processing. Just have to use your ears here (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/7m1xZ5 )
9. CLA Effects - Chorus up full, all others turned off, and the direct output is off too (Plugin Link: waves.alzt.net/mgob7O )

hello, in my opinion first apply eq then compress what is good in the voice, otherwise it is correct, by the way, we each do in our own style

I remember watching your old video on the same topic but using Cakewalk plugins. I thought you would do clip gain automation first.

Yeah that’s why I use the Vocal Rider first which does the automatic gain for that vocal. This way you don’t have to do clip gain automation

wow thanx for sharing but why didn't u mix it in the music track project itself.. why export the music only and import it again for voice recording ..

Thanks, so there’s a few reasons. First, these vocals were taken from the rappers original song and put over this new beat I produced to shorten up the project. Second, I mix everything hybrid so these vocals were originally mixed with both plugins and analog gear (not with just waves plugins). Last, my projects get pretty complex with all of the routing and analog gear, so to simply things, I create a new project.
