I used Scrivener Trial once before and thought it was neat, but I never did much with it. When NaNoWriMo came around this year I gave the NaNo edition a spin to write my hack at 50K. I loved it! It allowed me to keep my head on straight while trying to keep up with essentially two interweaving outlines. I was writing a mystery, so I had the outline of the book, as well as the outline of what was happening that the reader didn't see, i.e., what was really going on when suspects "got some 'splainin' to do." It's like someone was just fed up with word processors one day and thought "Hey! I want to make something that helps people actually write!"

Superb video! I love the "mood board" idea. It's such a great way to keep a close connection with the characters when they begin to feel distant. I'm glad to discover you and look forward to viewing your other videos.

"Some people call it 'Bible', but I tend to call it 'Codex'. Because Mass Effect." I use Scrivener for pretty much everything--including my video game projects! I really enjoyed the scrolling motion at the beginning and the shared screen thing. Awesome video, Rachael! A beautiful way to start the year.

I used to use Scrivener. I took a class in its use, got a book. Then I lost a project. I opened up a project I had been working on the night before and it was empty, 39,000 words gone. Not to mention the whole outline. I went for the backup, which Scrivener has a convoluted way of storing and reinstating, and it was just a bare outline. I backup my files to a cloud service in case of a drive crash, but it was just a copy of what Scrivener called a backup. I contacted my instructor, got on the forums no one could tell me where my project had gone or what I did wrong. It was just gone. Since I do not know what if anything I did wrong I just do not trust Scrivener. But, I love Scrivener's features. So, now I write in FocusWriter or Bambo Paper and cut and paste it into Scrivener. So, I can still use the features I love but if Scrivener pulls another Houdini I have another copy. I also backup the FocusWriter to the cloud. I also cut and paste to OneNote as well, color me paranoid.

Excellent. I've had, and resisted, Scriv for over a year. But started a new novel in it, to prove myself wrong, and am love/hating it still. But! I have spontaneously set up this novel pretty much as you show here. It's logical. I used to work in Word and did much of this file management in the finder. But Scriv is far more efficient and feature packed. Umma steal some of your ideas here, they're irresistible. Thanks. (my maternal family is from Glasgow. hope to take me 90 yr old mum there before she . . . goes.)

Thank you so much for doing this, it really opened my eyes to what scrivener can do. That's hella lot of work, but I think that it is a very useful way to handle a project. I will probably revisit this video multiple times, and curse myself to death for not doing this sooner.

Hey, thanks for the video! I just downloaded Scrivener and I'm still learning the ropes... I know that the idea of it is to use it however, but that can be really daunting when there's so much to a program like that. It's been really helpful to see how both you and other vloggers use it... so again thanks and much appreciated! :)

I didn't know you could do that with the documents notes, that's so cool! Once I get the full program I'll start on that when I do my first edit. I really need to have a look at everything Scrivener offers. I hope they bring out an Android version.

Thanks so much for this video ! Scrivener indeed improved my writing routine in a huge way but I still search for ways to use it more efficiently, if that makes sense. I used to work with Word and Google documents, so my codex, worldbuilding, characters sheets etc were on google cloud as well as on my hard drive and some notebooks...So it was quite difficult to keep some tracks of everything. Have you ever used Aeon Timeline to help you with your novels ? If so, I'd love to have your opinion on that :)

Are you able to print out the outline? Sometimes I'm never near my computer when I enjoy writing free hand and I like to have an outline on me. Also, what do you recommend structure-wise for someone who likes to set up subplots that may take place throughout each chapter? Can you outline a whole series of books using this program? If writing fantasy, can you have a section for certain magical objects and add description for each of them? I'm very much considering giving Scrivener a try. I have a whole suit cases of notes. Some that I don't need but hold onto for sentimental value, but I do need to gather everything together and have some kind of format for an outline.
@RachaelStephen
@RachaelStephen 7 жыл бұрын
+Jared Kenwood unfortunately there isn't a native feature for printing the outline but if you're in outliner view and select all docs you can copy and paste into a new one and print that, that's what I did. Scrivener doesn't have specific 'magical objects' features it's a versatile system where you can create folders and organise things however you want - if magic objects are important to your story, absolutely give them their own section! As for subplots - definitely outline each subplot as it's own mini story and then put all the scenes/cards into one order and break it up into chapters. I give each plot/subplot a code and color so I can tell them apart.

So far what I'm seeing is that the Mac version of scrivener FAR surpasses the Windows version. Nothing in Windows looks as clean as the mac version. I just downloaded the trial version for PC and doesn't look anything like this. I tried making moodboards and they just look terrible.

@RachaelStephen

Not sure on the specifics, but there's definitely an option if you're compiling for ebook (at least for epub). If you go to the Summary bar (instead of 'All Options) you'll see a box ticked for 'generate table of contents' - should be in the HTML settings tab.

Sorry but the guitar music is really distracting. I like the fact that you speak rather swiftly rather than dragging things out like so many people making this type of video but combined with the music, it is really hard to follow what you are saying. When you were in your classes at school trying to learn, did they play music in the background?

No need to get all insecure about certain words; accuracy is better. In writing/screenwriting, the term "bible" has absolutely nothing to do with the Christian Holy Bible, Christianity, or being Christian. It's an authoritative piece to help keep consistency in a literary work, series, or computer programming. A codex is a page-based format for your manuscript.
@RachaelStephen
