How I Organize all my Type 1 Diabetes Supplies ◉ Subscribe: goo.gl/ZfjYfu
Diabetes is stressful in and of itself, then take all the various supplies, gadgets and gizmos that we have to keep track of…it’s a lot!
When I sat down to plan this video the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the way I organize my supplies is more than just storage, it’s a deliberate and structured way of ensuring I always have a continuous flow of the supplies that I need. In this video I talk through how and why I organize all my supplies in the way that I do and that exact structure.

I have a similar system for the same reason. Each supply has a spot, or box. Same spot and only that supply. So it is very intuitive what is low by just looking. Then it is one less this thing to think about. Supplies that have random demands, similar to glucose gel. These have two boxes. One I always grab from. The second is always back up and full. Then if life happens….need more than normal….can’t refill right away. There is the second box to pull from. A comfortable safety net when a lows happens, knowing it is always available.

I have the most immediate supplies in a bathroom cabinet, and the backup supplies are in a cabinet in the laundry room. Immediate supplies are pump site changes, and strips, Lancets, and a meter. The backup supplies are the unused G7 boxes, unused pump supplies, lancet boxes, strips boxes etc. everything is within 12 feet of one another. Great video.

Andrea, your videos are so comforting, and your warmth radiates through the screen. My organization could be streamlined, but it works for now. I'm type 2 and old school with my supplies. My insulin pen needles and lancets are kept in a drawer of a bedside nightstand. Test strips are in a kitchen cabinet next to the medications I take for my kidney transplant, and insulin pens are stored in a refrigerator in the basement. My glucose tablets are on the nightstand, with a travel tube in my glove compartment that I refill as necessary. Stay strong and as upbeat as possible! Adam

That's when I started with all the boxes and systems and all that jazz! Being on a pump is awesome, but it's really adds another layer to the organizational needs of a diabetic - both practical from storage, but also keeping on top of all the prescriptions and refills!

OMG - past Andrea and future Andrea. Me too! I do much of the same, except I'm MDI. And I have more non-diabetes pills so they get space in my stash too (HBP, etc.) I love the Stasher reusable bags for quick trip "extras" and highly recommend the vial protectors. Lost a brand new bottle of Lantus many moons ago before they were around (in a Tim Hortons, no less!). Appreciate the video! ✌️

I am blind with almost no sense of touch. I track everything in a spreadsheet and keep supplies in stackable tubs with nfc stickers to easily find things. My local pharmacy also helps keep track of when I should need refills of everything. There's a lot to keep track of with diabetes and heart failure.

Andrea you should do a video on Correction Factor. You did that video about carb counting that used your insulin to carb ratio as an example. You should do one about how people who use MDIs estimate how much insulin is given for as a correction.

@@ShesDiabetic I know some like you might wait to bring their blood sugars down naturally through exercise i.e. stairs, dishwasher, and jumping jacks like you have demonstrated in a couple of your Day in the Life/What I Eat videos but others may bolus with a correction and this should be shown even for pump users because even though insulin pumps bypass the mental math of how to do corrections or a meal correction combo pumps or PDMs may go on the fritz (hopefully with the iOS app coming soon PDM errors will become a thing of the past for Omnipod) or for some on the rare occasion the auto-delivery mode is accidentally not activated and you don’t realize you ran out of pods til you need to apply a new pod and now you’re stuck back with having to compensate with pens/syringes for a day or few. I’ve seen a couple KZfaqrs mention this hiccup. Along with carb counting and insulin to carb ratios mentally correcting for highs is a Basics too. If you think about it this also ties into your “What I Wish You Knew About Type 1 Diabetes” KZfaq Shorts but zeroed in on a subtopic of it.

I love learning how others organise their diabetes supplies, I always take a tip or two away. I have made kits for each action (1 for pump site changes, 1 for CGM changes, 1 for emergency situations etc) and put my bulk things in bins and just top up as I go. Each kit has everything I might need (needles, swaps, tape, adhesive removal wipes, patches etc) and I just grab the kit and my insulin out the fridge and I’m good to go 💛

Thankyou for sharing Andrea, what ever we can do to make us feel more secure is very important. I keep my glucose tablets on the top shelf of the food pantry, with all my spare freestyle libre sensors, (I get 6 sensors at a time, and when fien to the last 2, reorder. Also keep a spare box of pen needle ends there, as well as box of lancets. My everyday go-to is a cooler smash bag , has two zipped compartments, with glucose meter, glucagon hypo kit, insulin scrips, glucose test strips, ketone strips, and the libre2 meter for ketones. Just leave my pens on top of bag. My spare insulin in a hard plastic lunch box in the fridge . Take care, Rex

I had to laugh when you talked about changing lancets or not. I have had type 1 for 46 years. Early on I was neurotic about changing them each time. Certainly not know. As longbas the lancet still pokes my finger I am good. Regarding organizing, I have a linen closet in my bathroom that I keep my pump and sensor supplies in and my ketone test strips are in drawar near my toilet. . I.have a bottle of glucose tablets at my bedside, on the kichen counter, and in my car. I carry a tube of glucose tabs in my purse. I also have a box in my closet that has old glucose meters and no test strips and another box with my books re pumps and diabetes. I likely have to purge some of this lol. Thanks for sharing.

You are much more organized than I'm, but my wife would love it when I was so organized 😁. In my case it is mostly put the box I just received from the hospital near the previous box that is not yet empty in the closet. I have also a big plastic box with all the stuf I'm currently using. More then that I not do. Most of the time I got enough supplies from the hospital for the next 4 month. When running low, I just send them a mail and receive a moment that I can pick them up in the hospital next day. When I need a prescription for insuline, I send mail to hospital and in a couple of hours it is added to my IdentityCard with wich I can go to the pharmacy to get it. So I can get fast extra stuff in this way. For low suggar I mostly use sport drink like Aquarius. Work fast because of the nitrates and is a drink without gaz so you can drink fast. I like that. When I do my normal shopping I just bring them also from the supermarket. Most of them are at a fixed place at home, and I have several on place that I use when I'm on the road. The number I have there stored I check always before leaving. Next week I switch from the G6 to the G7 that now can work with The tandem pump. Curious to that.

I have a similar system with a small cabinet dedicated to to my diabetic stuff. One thing to add, which could make for a difficult time, are whatever powers pump. Medtronic uses readily available batteries. But Tandem pump have a rechargeable battery. Having a spare charging cable, which isn't the same as an Apple phone charging cable, is good to have. I don't know if that cable is proprietary and have been too chicken to try charging with another cable. Perhaps someone out there knows? Spare power adapter though I have used other adapters without a problem.

Ohhhh such a good point!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! I'm not sure about the cable situation but I do know that when I was on the Tslim I would keep an extra external charger so that I could charge on the go - butttt I would always need to make sure that was topped up with a full charge - so that was another thing I used to keep in mind. Thank you so much again for sharing!!!

Your video glosses over “emergency low blood sugar glucose stuff.” What do you have in reserve for the serious unexpected low? I have a product prescribed by my physician for a true emergency called Baqsimi. It is inserted into the nose and the push of a button sends a dose of glucagon spray. Since there is no swallowing or injection involved it can be administered to an unconscious person by someone who is not a medical professional. Like you I have never used this product, but it buys peace of mind.

I wish I was allowed backup supplies. I'm not even able to order a new Dexcom sensor until days after I've put on my last one. Same with insulin, it's down to the last vial and I can order more. One thing I might note is to keep the boxes of the Dexcom sensors. I've been denied a return because I didn't keep the box, which had some pertinent info. on it. Question: is your iWatch 40mm or 44mm?

Regarding G7 returns, I have also recently been asked to provide the serial number contained on the box of a failed sensor. I keep the applicator (in case I am asked to return it) as well as the box for as long as I am using the sensor. Also, Dexcom has asked for details about the sensor failure, making it important to contact them immediately so the details are fresh on your mind.
