So the first batch of 100 auctions ended, and I shipped everything out. I thought I'd take a moment to document how I package records simply as an FYI for anyone out there who may want to sell some too. I've been a victim too often of poor packaging, so while some of this is going to be either common knowledge or potentially controversial (since everyone has their own process), I wanted to at least put my stake in the ground on this topic.

If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

corner dings is the risk here. I use a different purpose-made cardboard wrap which is slightly rectangular, hence avoiding the corner ding risk while still keeping the record firmly in place.

For real the boxes he uses are so good I've never had to worry about a record I've ordered from him

Best does he sell them? I don't see any on the website.

These white LP mailers can be very problematic if there is any kind of gap/spacing around the edges, and usually require 2/3+ cardboard inner pads and bubble wrap to get perfect. This gets costly to the point that I now basically only use the Bags Unlimited Mighty Music Mailers (as does Fred Cohen at the Jazz Record Center in NYC). Worth mentioning - The ‘box in a box’ method, typically saved for 78s, is by far the safest way to send valuable LPs without that dreaded anxiety!

Whiplash mailers ARE the way to go, but yeah a little more costly.

Like others have commented, there are many other oversized alternatives that actually protect the corners from drops. The mailers used in this video are nearly worthless for corner protection from any substantial corner impact. Although you demonstrate a very sound packing method which looks like it will maximize the protection, I still wouldn’t use it on more valuable albums. If you’re mailing an expensive album, you can easily justify the expense of an oversized mailer or double box it. Spending a little more on an oversized mailer is way more effective than buying insurance. Everything else being equal, I will choose sellers who use oversized mailers over those that don’t.

I do indeed use bulkier boxes for the most valuable items. And the few times that I’ll reuse a mailer is when I have an extra Acoustic Sounds box and those are pretty good in terms of protection

I think VMP’s mailers are outstanding.

Nice work, I package my sales the same way and have the exact same anxiety as they go out. So far, no issues with my grading and things arriving safely, so it seems to be working well for me too.

Almost every record I sell is worth over $50- so I use Whiplash boxes to ship them, never the cheap mailers you're using which are prone to corner dings. Of course YMMV.

That thin white cardboard of death is the absolute WORST way to send records. I've received so many damaged records from that crappy mailer, I just wish Amazon would stop selling them, but wish even more that sellers would stop mailing records with them. I'm at the point where I reach out to all sellers and ask to not ship in those mailers but instead ship in a box with at least 1" of space between the jacket and bubble wrap. Too bad I cannot post pictures of all the damaged boxes I've received.

Great advice all around. I once got a Johnny Lytle record packaged just like your bad example and it got a nasty cover ding as a result. I left positive feedback with a warning to buyers about the packaging and the seller banned me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you play test the records before you list them?

Did you sell ALL 100 of those records in one go? That's amazing. I will try to check out your next auction, but do you charge a flat (media mail) shipping rate per LP?
@jazzvinylcollector
@jazzvinylcollector 5 ай бұрын
98 of them ended up selling I believe. I charge the 2 lbs rate for the first LP and then add a dollar for each additional

I’ve actually never had to ship a shellac record however I’ve certainly taken in my fair share of broken shellac records from other peoples bad shipping practices

More or less my same process. Only slight difference - for more valuable items, I'll add those reinforced box corner protectors. Shipping 78s, a whole other kettle of fish

PayPal and Shipstation have a partnership and they pass through discounted shipping rates. So I use my PayPal account to access it almost as a feature within their site.
