Vinyl originals on these titles are really uncommon. There was a BN 75th LP Reissue on the Jordan haven't heard it. The press quality was usually not very good on that series. I have a older European BN CD of the Jordan. The vocal pitching issue you mention on the Jordan doesn't seem to stick out as much on the CD for some reason. Though some of this might be attributed to Sheila's stylising and sliding into/around notes. It's more of a Cabaret style of singing on this album than Jazz singing IMO. On the Downbeat review of the Greene album and the organ in the late 50's/early 60's Hammond organ Jazz, while hip and popular now, was often looked down upon by many Jazz critics and hard core afficianados at the time. They considered it commercial bar music even though it was popular in Black neighborhoods of the era.

Some serious career-sleuthing is required on her odd decision to quit the biz for a decade from early 70s onw. Was it disco, kids, shrinkitry or sth else. I bought last year the reissue of Sheila Jordan’s album, released in 2016. I like some of her songs, such as I’m a fool to want you, she reminded me of Helen Merrill’s style. I would like to find Dodo’s album, I hope they reissue it like Jordan’s. The music is pretty good, I streamed it. Thanks for covering those albums!

Joe Williams' "Worth Waiting For" comes to my mind as a Blue Note BST-84355 from 1970. There might be some other vocalist albums in the 4000 series, I'm not sure without looking. Blue Note vocalist albums of note also include Bobby McFerrin, Us3, and of course Norah Jones!

Now this is interesting & you're right, I don't think a good discussion about these longer 9001,9002 albums. Indeed I also thought that Sheila didn't quite hit the mark on that album. Her other works are great! I know I often try & explain away in my own mind why this kind of thing happens, especially when other albums in a discography are just superb. My Train of thought always revolved around the fact that some singers aren't comfortable with small combos. In the case of this album, it feels like she just needed (apologies to say) a melodic 'guide track' to keep her locked in key. Ha, that's just me as the arrangements are great, song choices for her in the album are very good, just kinda disappointing - a real shame. Very collectable though 😉

She's recorded pretty regularly since 1975 and is still going strong at the age of 95, performing and teaching regularly. Her most recent album is 2022's 'Live at Mezzrow'.

Loved the commentary and analogy of this album on John Wright whose first album, "SOUTH SIDE SOUL" I bought way back in the early 1960's upon its initial release. When first putting it on the turntable, Wright's technique immediately made me think of a heavier version of Pianist, Red Garland's block chord style...or another of my favorite, Gene Harris of THE 3 SOUNDS TRIO! In short, I was blown away by this Incredible Artist!❤

I’m interested to know more about your experiences as a DJ. I have an opportunity to spin some Jazz records once a month at a local coffee shop but I’m reluctant to do so because I’d be using a single turntable. No mixing, blending, fading in and out etc. Not that I posses any of those skills, I’m just concerned that without anything to enhance the experience for the audience, I’m just a guy up there playing single tracks off of records. Anything you could share about your approach would be greatly appreciated.
@jazzvinylcollector14 күн бұрын
I’ve only ever done a dual turntable setup with mixing board, but I’ve definitely never done any real mixing or blending or beat matching. The most I do is fade one up and one down to maintain the constant music. It may be that a coffee shop audience wouldn’t notice as much if it’s during the day and you had to switch records out. Otherwise, you’d be surprised how often the tracks I want to play are the first one on the side, which makes switching out that much faster since you don’t need to worry about dropping the needle too carefully to cue something up

The Latin Kick has had a ton of releases over the years, who knew elevator music was so popular? I assume it's from the Fantasy recording studio (the engineer is not mentioned anywhere) as it has a similar sound to the Vince Guaraldi recordings done around the same time. Hopefully this new release is mono, as I don't believe Fantasy had true stereo capability in 1956. The 1959 stereo re-release has to be one of those horrible mono repurposed to stereo attrocities. I would check for mono/stereo before buying this new LP. All of the other releases you mentioned are highly recommended.

Hi Chris, I am so upset with Craft OJC. The fist 4 you mentioned I preordered in March and they where to ship 7 June. Here it is June 21 and no ship yet. Notified them twice since the 10th and they do not respond. I also ordered the Burn in Hell and a companion issue last month and got a notice that won’t ship until July 26. I am so upset. I don’t know what to do. I’ve ordered from them before and never had a problem. You’d think that they would ship preorders first. Some of these are up on Amazon. Which is very upsetting. Thanks for letting me vent. Thanks for you do for the Jazz community
@jazzvinylcollector20 күн бұрын
I don’t know what to tell you but that’s not fun at all! I know sometimes if you pay for them all together, they will wait until everything is available to ship the order. So if you preorder 4, you have to wait for the last one’s release date before shipping them
