Sarah, que trabalho lindo! Quanta delicadeza, quantos detalhes. Obrigada!

Wonderful. Large works take time, but they also are where you can truly immerse yourself and stretch your capabilities. I've just started a large work (100 cm x 70 cm) using copic markers. The subject is complex with tricky linear perspective and lots of detail. It took me 5 hours to do the initial drawing. I've never had such an intense time in the studio. It was like doing the most intense gym work out. I literally, physically felt like I was going to vomit. Did some colour comps yesterday, while wondering how I was going to handle the high contrast lighting and value structure. Your video just helped me enormously to solve my problems. Ironic because you are painting a forest path and I'm drawing a steel factory.

When you were talking about it going "so slow" you forgot to mention the sheer size of the paper - that was a lot of area to cover! (also why I rarely paint larger than 12 x 12! I tend to want to be done with it in no more than two sessions). These demos are very good to watch to see possibilities.

Everyone else in the painting class is using acrylics, I'm thinking of maybe trying to fit in a little better, but cannot afford to totally change from watercolors to a different medium. Your work in gouache is beautiful. Gouache seems to me to offer similarities to both, you can paint over a previous layer with a different opaque layer like acrylics but you can also lift and reconstitute as with watercolor. Am I on the right track or way off? I own too much watercolor supplies to just drop it and change over.
@SarahBurnsStudio2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can combine watercolor and gouache. Well…there is also acrylic gouache but that is something else. Regular gouache is wonderful on top of or mixed with watercolor. To me it is so versatile because I can use it watered down like watercolor, or thick and creamy like acrylic or oil. You only need a few tubes to get started - i recommend it!

I find gouache on canvas much easier and forgiving. I mean, you could erase gouache easily if any mistake with wet tissue, easy to pull and push the paint on surface, even the brightness is good as canvas doesn't absorb as paper I suppose, what's your opinion? Do you find gouache better or hot press Vs cold pressed paper? In recent workshop I heard the artist saying use minimum white and your painting looks fresh and vibrant...less chalky...is this true? He said it's his discovery!!! Is this trick since long time in art history? I'm asking key questions to you because ...after James gurney I feel you are the best in Gouache 👌👌👌
@SarahBurnsStudio3 жыл бұрын
I have not painted with gouache on canvas yet - but I did just prime a canvas with watercolor ground so I could try it. I use white to desaturate and lighten my color. It's a well known fact among seasoned painters.

So can gouache bloom the way watercolor does? In other words do you have to either do wet into wet or wait until it is completely dry to go over it again?
@SarahBurnsStudio3 жыл бұрын
Gouache acts very similarly to watercolor except that the pigment seems a big heavier..like it will stay in place easier. But gouache never dries permanently, it can always be reactivated with water, which means even in 5 years you can blend into a layer you already did. Use caution 😄
@artbykcappadona51663 жыл бұрын
So if I’m painting alla prima do I just paint like I would with acrylics or do I have to worry about blooms like watercolor gets if painted into damp? When painting alla prima can I just apply layer upon layer without worrying about how wet or dry it is?
@SarahBurnsStudio3 жыл бұрын
@@artbykcappadona5166 You'll have to experiment to find a method that gets you to the results you like, I can't answer it for you.
@DannySabraArt3 жыл бұрын
@@artbykcappadona5166 If your paper is wet, the gouache can bloom into other color, so it's best to let it dry at least partially before coming in with more wet. In general it handles more like watercolor than acrylic. That said it usually doesn't take very long to dry enough that you can avoid the blooms and paint a stroke over it. Especially if the paint is thicker and not heavily watered down. Remember with gouache you can alter the tonal value of the paint by mixing with white (whereas with watercolor you often dilute the paint to achieve the tone you want) so that is a difference that can help eliminate unwanted blooming.
@artbykcappadona51663 жыл бұрын
@@DannySabraArt thank you Danny. I have only used gouache white over watercolor. Just ordered a set of gouache and I’m excited to try out an opaque paint that I can use outside. I love my oils and acrylic. But tried watercolor for its lightweight portability. So naturally I want to try gouache for the convince of being lightweight like water color-but, with the opaque possibilities like acrylic, without the fixative. Anyway I appreciate your reply. It was very helpful. I will keep your advice in mind.
