I'm a firm believer that an army finished quickly to the same standard, based and ready for the table, will always look better than a mountain of grey plastic behind one perfect, glorious miniature. ;D There's room for taste in there, of course, but sometimes it's as simple as "Just paint!"

Doing the Ultramarines and the red scheme you use for Word Bearers 30k. I noticed you either shade after the base colour and then do the drybrushing or shade after drybrushing. Which do you prefer? I guess shading last will even out some of the mess I make drybrushing.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 6 жыл бұрын
Normally, in my case, I will usually basecoat, drybrush and then shade. The benefit with this is that once the shade has dried, if you want to highlight even further you can pick a lighter layer paint - or even the same colour as the drybrush - and use that, and get a very natural edge.

That Templar looks absolutely fantastic!! For years I collected Templars but never highlighted the black due to a fear of them turning out too grey, which made for a very dull looking army. Time to knock up a couple of test minis and begin a new crusade. Thank you for taking the time to make these tutorial videos, it's definitely helped with my understanding of how to paint.

It can still take a little practice, but once you get to grips with how different paints come off the brush and the little bit of preparation required, I think drybrushing has its place in every painter's stable. Particularly when you're wanting reliable, easily replicated results.

I think the only thing cooler than a Norseman in full Space Marine armor (how I paint things: space wolves), is a Knight Templar in full Space Marine armor. Black is one of those colors that frustrates me to no end. How black do I paint this? If I paint it too black how can I shade it? If I don't paint it black enough after its highlighted will it look grey and not black at all? Blah blah blah, good grief I drive myself nuts with that darn color! But oh how I love it so lol. Great video as always. Keep them coming. And I hope your abode passed your in-laws white glove inspection over the past weekend lol.

With some luck and the grace of the Emperor on my side, yes, the apartment passed muster. ;D Black is a tricky one, I find, since there's so many different ways of getting it right. It's really a style choice in the end, and after that you've got to think about what colour you want to highlight with, and that turns into yet another debate on style and tone and so on...! There's no denying that once you've got something that works for you, though, a black army can look incredibly striking on the table!

Really awesome video, my next project is going to be Deathwatch, and I am defiantly going to use this video as a guide for the black armour. A question though; In the beginning of the video you mention using Dark Reaper & Fenrisian Grey as your highlights for the Black Templar, but at the end you speak about Incubi Darkness and Fenrisian Grey. I understand it's a slip of the tongue, but what would the outcome be with an Incubi Darkness base highlight with Fenrisian Grey, in regards to a Deathwatch scheme?

What would you recommend for black armor with yellow or metallic gold? Specifically i am looking at the alternate paint schemes in the Imperial Fists color plates in HH3. Specifically black armor with yellow shoulders and yellow helmet, sergeants with red helmets; and the terminators with black armor and metallic gold trim. Also wondering about a dark charcoal grey that appears black unless it is next to a true black, like from the Raven Guard plates.

I was excited by how easy this looked, so I gave it a shot and failed pretty hard by over-doing it. Similar to what's happened on the helmet of your Iron Hands marine, but all over the model. Getting that finish that we see at 4:03 and 5:20 in this video is not as easy as you make it look... you're very well practiced in this technique. As I watch the video again, I'm thinking the key is to be very selective and neat with the drybrushing (as weird as that sounds), and not to over do it!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 6 жыл бұрын
Oh no! I think the key with this is always to have 'too little' paint on your brush, since you can go back over and continue adding more if you want to. Having too much to begin with will end up getting that chalky, crunchy finish. Luckily, since it's a first stage to painting the miniature, it's not too hard to black it all in again and start fresh.
@awylh
@awylh 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Rather than layering on more paint, I've cleaned off the model with isopropyl alcohol (which is amazing for this btw), have re-primed black, and will give it another go with "too little" on the brush and being much more selective about where to drybrush. Wish me luck!

@SonicSledgehammerStudio

The bases are actually really easy! I spread on some Armageddon Dunes textured paint first and give that about an hour to dry solid, then hit it with some Seraphim Sepia shade. Once that's dried a quick drybrush of Tyrant Skull finishes it off. Mournfang Brown around the edges of the bases, and I use a couple of tufts from whatever range I think will fit; these are Army Painter Mountain Tufts.

After black primer is it best to go over with a layer of black before I dry brush or just dry brush on top of the primer
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 4 жыл бұрын
If you're going to paint black armour it's always best to do a single thin coat of black over the primer, just in case you need to touch up any small black areas later. The primers will usually match black pretty much perfectly, but anywhere that the primer hasn't covered 100% it'll look out of place once the miniature is drybrushed and shaded.
