One of the most iconic events of Rio Carnival takes place in the Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí, a purpose-built stadium that hosts the world-famous samba parade. The Sambódromo was designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1984, becoming an instant icon of Rio's urban landscape.
The Sambódromo spans 700 meters and can seat up to 90,000 spectators, making it the perfect venue for the elaborate and colorful samba parades that take place during carnival season. The parades feature dozens of samba schools, each with its own unique theme and elaborate floats, costumes, and dance routines. The competition is fierce, as schools fight for the title of carnival champion, with judges evaluating each performance on criteria such as music, choreography, and costumes.
For both locals and tourists alike, the Sambódromo is a must-visit destination during carnival season. It's a truly unforgettable experience that showcases the incredible creativity, energy, and passion of Rio's samba culture.
This year, my friend Paul and I had the opportunity to participate in Rio de Janeiro's biggest carnival event with a group of foreigners, and join the samba school, Lins Imperial.
Enjoy watching! :)
