Short summary of my Japanese Study History: Fall 2018, I studied abroad in Japan for four months. I decided to self study, while taking a beginner class to talk with my Japanese friends. I went back home in January 2019 to graduate college and self-studied through KZfaq. I watched Japanese Dubbed Videogames and looked up every word I didn't know and added them to a quizlet set. I have 4 sets and each one has 2000 words. This was such a fun way of studying. I also watched a lot of Japanese KZfaqrs as well. Then last year in March 2020, I was able to come back to Japan for an ALT job in Ishikawa and being in a Japanese environment helped out. I talked with my teachers and students in Japanese. I made a lot of japanese friends as well. Since I had Netflix, I was able to watch a lot of western shows dubbed in Japanese. Then, I signed up for the December 2020 Exam. I passed N2 on the first try! It was my first time taking and passing any kind of JLPT Exams as well. Never took N5, N4, N3 at all. Just went straight for N2 and passed it on the first try. Took 44/60 on Language Knowledge, 23/60 on Reading, and 34/60 on Listening. Grammar and Vocabulary were both an A. So it took me 2 years and 4 months to reach the N2 Level. All self-study. I also have the JLPT Study Books too. Here are my questions: How much is the gap between N2 and N1? Which section did you struggle with the most and focused more on? I know most of the N1 Kanji and vocabulary because of the videogames. I know for sure I'll need to focus on reading (I have many Japanese novels) and grammar (I also know 日本語の森先生 as well. I watched her grammar videos too and they helped explained the points clearly and I took notes). Listening might be fine since I always watch dramas and anything in Japanese on KZfaq. And I plan on signing up for an N1 Course to help out and it's been a while since I've been in a Japanese Class. I'm taking the N1 Exam this December 5th, 2021. It'll be my first time taking it and I'll be fine if I don't pass it on my first time. Hopefully on the 2nd and 3rd time. This video helped out a lot, so thank you!

Thanks so much for sharing your study experience! Not gonna lie- mad impressed with your drive and how much you've accomplished in such a short time! 👏👏 Here are your answers: I would be lying if I said I completely remember. I took the N2 in 2012?? And then the N1 in 2017 Dec, and I actually don't remember most of the test for the JLPT N2. But- from the study materials for the N1 which are still more fresh in my mind, I would say the volume of stuff that is required on the N1 is more. Like- there's more variety of words? But a lot of it is just learning how the test works. Also I struggled personally with the reading the most- so I would say focus on that if you're doing really well in other areas. While reading stuff is good for your Japanese overall- like the guy from 日本語の森 said it's about knowing how to take the test- so while I tried to do 読解- I know I'm not good at it even in English tbh- so I just tried to strengthen my 語彙 and 文法 as much as possible to just get by since I was pretty sure the 読解 wouldn't be that great 😅 Thanks for the question and hoping you the best in your studies! 努力した分は必ず報われる!そう信じて勉強頑張ろう!📚

You're a natural on camera, I love it! Thank you so much for mentioning kokugo books! My level is still shit (around JLPT4) but I've been curious about the books used by schools and couldn't manage to find info about that. Very informative video all in all - our personal study style really is the most important thing indeed. I used to fool myself into buying textbooks and stuff as if that would do the work but I was (and sometimes still) lying to myself...

Haha thanks so much! I would say having a teleprompter really helps. I don't remember exactly why I decided to buy the books, other than I just followed the thought process of studying Japanese in Japanese but not just the JLPT text books. Also they are so colorful :D lol Really glad if the video helps at all. Btw here is link to get the books on Amazon. Not sure if you are in Japan- but if so you can check them out by looking up this 小学教科書ワーク 光村図書 I think either 1st or 2nd year elementary school books might be good for the N4. I used a 6 year book for my studies and they had a lot of words and things I wasn't aware of.

N1 is not easy to pass even for Chinese native speakers. Will attend N2 very soon and wish to pass N1 by end 2021 or Jul 2022 as working will take away my time. Also, 新完全マスター do is a good choice for learning. Many Japanese trainers in China also recommend this suite of books - it do has a Chinese translation published.

8 years for you? 10 years so far for me 😅 I failed n2 by a few points with little study. 8 months of study for n1? That makes sense! Studying for the test gets redundant. I’d like to pass the n1 myself some day~
@gon-chanlaura5155
@gon-chanlaura5155 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I had to count again. I started studying in 2009 and I passed the test in 2017 so I think that's 8 years. It's all good tho yo! If you wanna pass it for yourself and not to try and get a job, then take your time and enjoy the journey. I was trying to pass it so I could then put that on my job application, but it's not necessarily worth it for everyone. Like you said studying for that test gets redundant 'cause it's not your Japanese skill they test (well kinda?) So much as your ability to take the test and memorize things. Either way hoping the best for you! ☺️✨

I don't read or write Japanese at all, but... Wow! 4:34 I recognize gorgeous penmanship when I see it. I get the impression you learned N1 mostly through self-study, But I'm curious, were prior levels were achieved through normal classroom instruction, or did you always prefer to learn on your own? NOT SO FUN FACTS: I tool Spanish in grades 7-8. Unfortunately, I didn't find out our teacher learned to speak Spanish while doing Missionary work in the Panama Canal Zone. I say unfortunate because on the very first dialogue of 9th grade Spanish, the teacher had me stop speaking and asked me to stay after class. Once all the other kids left, he turned and asked "Where did you learn Spanish?" I named the local jr. high. He sighed, and told me that I spoke with the accent of a drug-addicted prostitute, and that he'd need to speak with the principal about what to do with me. FUN FACTS: The other students and I were permitted to take computer programming at the college across the street to meet our high school language requirements. The District reassigned the teacher to History, and updated the hiring requirements for Language instructors. SUPER FUN FACTS: In the end, it gave me a head start on a great career, a better understanding of how our school's bureaucracy functioned, and that if you're good at chess, the teachers will let you play in the teacher's lounge, which often gives one access to interesting keys and entry codes on campus.

Thanks so much Dave! Every once in a while when I see my handwriting I have a gag reflex, but it's getting better so just gotta keep at it lol To answer your question I did take various Japanese levels in college, but I think the bulk of what I studied or learned was outside of class because I just spent a lot of time studying- not just the stuff in the textbook but things I wanted to study. Those were great facts! Except maybe the drug-addicted prostitute accent LOL Glad it worked out in the end. I actually had a "bad"? experience with language learning in high school too! The German teacher quit two weeks into the semester because no one was doing the homework (not trynna toot my own horn- but toot toot I was doing my homework) so we then had a "substitute" Spanish teacher who just ended up being our Spanish teacher for the rest of the year. I sometimes think I might've been in Germany now if it wasn't for that teacher leaving 🤔
