This horse was very reluctant and would kick when I tried to lift his legs. In this video I show you how in just a few steps I got this horse to accept having his legs handled. If you have a horse that doesn't let you touch his legs these steps will help you fix and work through those issues!

Very helpful. Another handler suggested lifting the back legs up as high as is possible because the higher the leg the more difficult it is for the horse to kick with force.

i notice you hook your fingers over the front edge of the hoof while holding it. I used to do that until my horse stamped his foot down, and I lost the end of my middle finger- literally ripped it off. Much safer cradling the pastern.

Sorry to hear that happened! Must have been terribly painful and shocking! I guess for most people it would be safest to hold the leg higher up. I make sure to let go as soon as the foot gets close to the ground. Your story will help me stay extra safe 😊

I had a problem with my mare lifting back right leg. I did everything mentioned in this video. I ended up breaking it down to small steps over a 2 week period. Every day. Started with soft rope just to lift her foot barely off the ground and release when I choose to release. Reward and wait 2 minutes and repeat. The waiting period was important. After 3 or 4 successful attempts ended the day. Built on previous day the next day until now I can lift her feet and clean them. Patient Patient

Lovely video! I am working on this with my rescue mare and I will be honest it is not going well. Her front legs are fine, her back are absolutely off limits. They are very overgrown (guessing a minimum of a year no trims at least) and no doubt painful. I am going to have to sedate her to get them trimmed but hoping to continue doing this until we can get to the point of picking up a hoof. Great video and very helpful.

Hi Jessica, I’m glad the video was helpful…I hope your mare will start to accept her back legs being handled! Have you managed to get a soft rope around her back legs at all or is that a bit too much for her?

We are working on this with our mare. My unprofessional opinion is that having her fest stand versus being put in cross ties or tied up to a post will give her the freedom to navigate. I don’t want to sedate my horse.

Yes you’re right. Letting her move around as she gets used to it will be much more natural and help her relax 😊

I’m loving your videos! Have only watched this one and the desensitizing to lead rope but they are easy to follow and understand. What other videos would you recommend for a yearlong that hasn’t had much interaction so is very reactive? He’s hard to catch as well. Anything for that? Thank you for the videos!

Thanks! My horse has a bigger problem with front legs tho- she kneels...and I'm always afraid that she'll injure jerself if I keep holding jer foot...so I let go- or hold the upper part of her leg so that she can't kneel...we're seeing progress but....damn- what do I do? Someone mentioned roping it like you did-but- what if she starts kneeling? When do you even leg go of the preassure with the rope???
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 3 ай бұрын
Hi! It’s not going to injure her to kneel unless it’s on a hard or rough surface. I would just let her kneel. By letting go of her foot when she kneels you’re teaching her that kneeling is the best way to get you to let her foot go. Instead hold onto her foot even when she’s kneeling and wait for her to stand back up and then let her foot go. Teaching her that if she stands up nicely and calmly you’ll let her foot go immediately. Soon you won’t have to let her foot go so soon and then she’ll not kneel anymore!

What If a horse likes to paw front hooves when you ask them to pick up?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 8 ай бұрын
Sounds like a nervous and stressed horse. Using a small rope to lift up on the hoof until you can hold it in a bent position will help. Once you get the hoof and leg in a bent position the horse can’t easily take it away. Hold it for a few seconds until the horse relaxes his leg and then let it go. Repeat until he’s calm with leg handling.

I have a yearling that doesn't like his back feet done, but instead of just trying to pull his feet away, he hops around AND tries to pull/kick. I'm making some progress with him, but is there something you'd suggest in the case of him actually hopping around? Another thing, yesterday while working with his front foot, he decided to just lean into me and basically kneel on the ground. I've never had a horse do that before lol.

Hi Kelly, here’s something I would try with him… Its important that he is calm while working with his feet. He must stand still and relax in order for it to work. Because of that I recommend doing lots of ground work with him beforehand that will make him a little less fresh and also remind him that you are in charge. It would also be helpful if you spend more time around him just loving on him so he realises that being around you is a good thing. Then try to pick his hooves up. If he resists then go back to groundwork. Don’t forget to reward the slightest try!

What do you do if your 1200 lb horse moves forward every time you try to pick up or touch a leg, plus tries to bite you in the front and kick you in the back? To top it off she has a club hoof so trimming is very important!/i can rub them with the stick but she is dangerous when i reach for them... HELP.

This is not desensitisation - it's flooding , such an outdated and unnecessary approach that send horses in shut down /learned Helplessness
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 11 ай бұрын
I disagree. I’d rather get a horse over his fears in 2 minutes than sneak around him just waiting for him to blow up. I don’t care how you train horses my way is faster and more efficient.
@hearyourhorsewhisperpositi5923
@hearyourhorsewhisperpositi5923 11 ай бұрын
@@HorsePerfect flooding is not how you get over animals fears, all you do is shut the animal down and create learned helplessness or very high level of stress that have a negative influence on their emotional and physical well - being (think ulcers , compromised immune system etc). Effectiveness is not enough when we have the knowledge to get the same job in a more horse friendly ways. The more force is used to train an animal, the less skilled the trainer is .

You can call what I do flooding and I can call what you do a drought how does that sound? 😂 But I hear you and there is some truth in what you're saying. I'm sure there's a lot I could learn from you.

Is flooding a thing? Yes. Is it bad for progress? Yes. Is that what was happening here? No. That horse did not act flooded. Every horse is an individual, with individual reactions. When you pay attention to your horse, as this kid was doing, it doesn't cross over into flooding. This was textbook desensitization. He found perfect place to show the horse there is nothing to fear, and therefore helped it overcome it. He did not overdo it. A horse that is overcome with fear will not show idle curiosity about ropes on the ground, as this horse did. That alone should tell us the truth of what happened here.

You can see how calm he was afterwards though right? He completely got over his fear of whips and relaxed. However, it is maybe a better idea to do it in a more confined space so you definitely have a good point.
