How I predicted India winning the Thomas Cup

3 ай бұрынOn May 15th 2022, Srikanth Kidambi thundered down the winning smash to create history for India, winning India not just their first ever Thomas Cup medal, but GOLD!
In doing so they became the 5th different nation to win from 5 Thomas Cup editions, sending shockwaves around the badminton community at the time.
Heading into this competition, no-one had them as potential winners...well, one person did...me!
I made a post and subsequent videos highlighting how I felt India were the dark horse of the competition and that they had a very good chance of winning...and they did!
In this video I explain how I came to that decision, what made me make that post, why India were my dark horse pick.
And on top of answering that question, at the end I give my thoughts on whether they can defend their title at the upcoming 2024 Thomas Cup.

Hey everyone, I hope you are enjoying the video. Small note...I made an error, I misremembered something. And that is that HS Prannoy didn't beat Viktor at the 2021 World Tour Finals (that was 2022) but the 2021 Indonesia Masters (which was held at same venue just 2 weeks earlier) Apologies for that error, doesn't change anything in terms of my reasoning but I wanted to address it as had someone pointed it out to me. I had noticed the same while whtching it on Tuesday , wanted to point out when time permitted . Takes nothing away from the chain of incredible content that you are up with . Thank you for creating something on one of the most historical moments not just indian sport and not just in badminton.

@patrickjones1143 I must admit I did think this video would get more views because there seems to be so many Indian fans. Maybe it isn't making it's way through to them or they just didn't want to watch. Shame but maybe one day that'll change

Well rounded thoughts. It could get really close this time and nations with depth, meaning a good 2nd Doubles pair and 3rd Singles will likely benefit. My favorite is Indonesia and my pick for dark horse goes to Japan.

Yeah, this year you're gonna need a team solid all the way through plus options too. Men's disciplines are so close and open right now picking a winner is difficult

I'm BadmintonLovers from Indonesia. I have to be honest. The Thomas Cup that year made me very angry and annoyed 😅I hope to win back to back champs but the players played very badly especially in Men's singles,If I still remember it, it still annoys me haha,in 2024 there will be another Thomas Cup "Seeing Jonathan play so well, I'm quite optimistic, but I'm a little worried that MD isn't as good as before. Btw India 2022 best team.

As an indian it was a proud moment for all of us🥹🥹 Watching all the matches day by day and winning quarterfinals gave us hope. To be honest after beating denmark at the semifinals we are so happy ( it was the revenge for 2020 quarterfinals ) By watching the matches played by the team at the semifinals and finals my eyes has gone😂 India is in a tough draw at this years thomas and I'm hoping that the players can play even more better from the last thomus cup. The major change this time around is India taking 5 singles players, and mostly to get favorable matchups, like Kiran George against most of the Chinese Players or Priyanshu if Srikanth/Prannoy still don't get their level up. The flexibility to drop Prannoy to make Lakshya MS1 is going to be a huge tactic if Prannoy does not perform. Lakshya is in mercurial Form of late and especially in team tournaments. Sat-Chi are a banker of sorts, so I still fancy India to be 2-0 up in most ties, where they take it from there is the question to be asked. Srikanth was in the form of his life in the last Thomas Cup, Won every single Match 6/6. He certainly won't be the same now so that could be the deciding factor.

Ben what an amazing video!!! I watched all the matches in 2022 and am looking forward to 2024. My prediction is India will end up qualifying second in their group even this time. India beats Thailand 4-1, England 5-0 and loses to Indonesia 2-3, with victories coming from MS2 and MD1. But then the field opens. If India can avoid the Chinese half we can very well have India playing the finals again.

@@BenBeckmanBadminton : I was considering Lakshya to win his match against anyone he fares against in the team event. I am not sure if BWF will consider the latest ranking or, the rankings of the players when they created the Thomas cup draws. If that's the ranking date then Christie will play the second singles, still you never know. If that's the case then Prannoy has a good shot against Ginting as well. A very interesting match indeed IND vs INA.

Great video again Ben! I do feel India have a slight chance to defend the title. I feel so because of the very strong group stage for India. Taking maybe 2 matches against Indonesia and a strong performance against Thailand could very be boost in confidence and belief for the players (something we saw the women’s team do in winning the Asia Team Championships).

Even as an Indonesian, when I saw that we're matching up against India, I thought that Indonesia will lose. I did, however, thought that we will lose 3-2 (win in doubles but lost all singles matches). I guess it's a proof on how miraculous Minion pairing is, it's hard for Ahsan to be paired with Kevin, lol.

If india can win atleast a medal.by entering semifinals..it will be a huge achievement... because we are yet to win a silver or bronze in thomas cup....just go straight and won thonas cup in first chance last year

My bet is going to be Indonesia. Although I'm an Indian but Jojo is in red hot form their MD can beat any team on their day and so can Ginting(the recent match against Axelsen proves that). China is certainly the 2nd favorites as Kiang's pair is strong so is Shi and Feng will be a top contest between Indonesia and China. But Chinese crowd is nasty! they will have a huge play. Whereas India is struggling, Prannoy hasn't been in form lately, Lakhsya is doing great but it will take something huge to kill top opponents whereas Kindambi's recent Goofups says smtg else. the only strong force is Satchi but how much can we rely on them?? India will have to really forget the recent past and get into some form to defend the title. Hoping for them to win!

I think China are going to win, there's too much quality on that team and their MD2s just blow every other MD2 away. I do think Indonesia and Denmark have a chance though, Jojo can beat everyone right now and Denmark have dangerous players in 4/5 slots

It will be tough but India proved at Asian Games that the Thomas Cup wasn't a fluke and that they are hard to beat in team events

I agree with your every statement, but Srikanth performing well in any tournament was always uncertain, I think his performance came because of the team and the fact that India had never finished on the podium. just after the Thomas cup, he didn't play well in any individual/team events. china and Indonesia are favorites this time!

It will be a fascinating competition this year but, with home advantage, I think China may be the team to beat. They are starting to fire on all cylinders again after a period of rebuilding and their home support will be massive.

It was more because of the pressure that Anders Antonsen felt to deliver in Aarhus as they had to pretty much win all 3 singles in the final stages something he wasn't able to do. I felt the same would be the case in 2022. Kinda proved right as Anders lost again and struggled there. The other singles players also felt it and didn't perform as well as usual. Of course, other issues too such as injury, etc, but didn't have time to dive into all of that. If I was really diving into every aspect, then maybe mental fragility is a bit too vague and over simplifying it

As an Indian, I do believe India has a very slime chance this year as I do not see any x-factor in the team as most MS players are terribly out of form and has been inconsistent. Players are getting older and going past their peak age. Other team has matured in the mean time. Take a look at India’s recent performance in BAC team event. However, it’s not impossible!

Another deep video. It was always lowest period for almost all athletes after the olympic games. China unlucky with SYQ case and Indonesia unfortunate with low period after olympic and unlucky rank where Ginting has to face his unfavour opponent and apparently it was also his bad year. Christie as usual hot and cold that time. For 2024, looks like China and Indonesia. India will be down if Prannoy play first. Their rank combination somehow strange

100% sure India will lose the title. Most of their players are downhill at the moment, while Indonesia, China and Denmark still the strongest contender. For Japan ? It is a bit of sad while Momota just bid farewell after Thomas Cup, and it seems the other male players struggle as well.

@@BenBeckmanBadminton i'm indonesian bro, i mean it's kinda hard to discuss MD for upcoming Thomas Cup without Indonesian pair but it's what happened now. Since Daddies & Minions past their dominance performances, Practicly only Liang/Wang who can stand a chance against Chiraj/rankireddy. Indonesia condition kinda similar to Denmark with MD as a weaknesses for this event. All over, i think China will take this trophy. Sorry terrible english.
