This is genius. After a recommendation to buy this wax I was simply running my thread through it having cut the full piece in half. Since doing this I no longer get any frayed thread, no small chunks of hard wax in my touching turns and actually see the benefits of a good soft sticky wax and no more slippages. You’re a gentleman Davie for posting this video. Top man

Hi Davie - great stuff - I never would have thought of that. Your videos on patterns are really excellent too - very clear and well filmed. Have you considered doing a video on how you store your materials? This has always been a pain to me and it would be good to see how an expert does it! Thanks

Thanks for this tip Davie....when I am tying a PBP waxing the thread holds the bristles in place. Without the waxing they slip to the top and you finish up with a clump of bristles. Keep the hints and tips coming, we do appreciate them

Thanks for sharing Davie! For years I have been blending beeswax, rendered pine sap and paraffin wax to make different grades of tying wax for touch-dubbing (as an adhesive), dubbing (to give better "traction" to my fingers), and for tying thread (to get better grip on some materials). Recently, I have started "wearing" a dab of wax on my finger as you do - find it very convenient not to have to search my desk for my wax. :-) Found that the best source of beeswax are the wax rings used by plumbers to seal toilet flanges and pine sap is easy to gather from mature trees that have had their lower branched pruned off. I use a double boiler on an electric element (outside!) to prepare the wax as all the components are quite flammable when melted. ATB! Hank
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hank, It certainly looks like you know a lot about how to make a good wax. I did think about using a ring that would hold a piece of wax so all I had to do was put it on instead of sticking the wax to the side of my finger but I never got round to doing it...I'm glad you liked the video... All the very best Davie..
@hankvana21497 жыл бұрын
Hi Davie, Per your example, I am always happy to share if I can help. :-) I had thought about using a 15 - 20 mm length of clear vinyl tubing (inside diameter to suit and slit to allow an easy fit) as a band to carry the dab of wax. Have not tried it yet. ATB! Hank

@terrhian6772 жыл бұрын
Have a question for you Davie. Even if you are using a waxed nylon thread, you still use this wax when tying? Also do you fish for carp with your flies? Do you think carp are spooked by the smell of fly tying wax? By the way I love your fly tying videos! Thank you for taking the time of making your fly tying videos!

hi Davie, thanks for sharing another great video.I've recently been looking around at good lake patterns to use here in Ireland, and I'm wondering if you could do some tying videos of more irish classics such as golden olive bumbles, fiery brown bumbles, etc. I know you've done dabbler and Sedgehog styles of the flies above but I believe bumbles work brilliant and they look good too. Thanks and best regards, Marc

Great stuff Dave,, here’s a question for you,,, when should you wax your thread? Thx
@DavieMcPhail3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, You can wax your thread really all the way through the tying of the fly but I would say the most important points would be when tying on and off the hackles and wings of your flies as this will give you more grip and strength in your thread, though less is best as once through with the wax works better.. All the very best Davie

Hello Davie... I was making wax disks the other day with an old piece of Veniards' tying wax... one that had set out for years. It seemed to have small bits of one of the wax components in the disks. Tried quite a while to re warm and fold them back in but they would not... or would not much. Have you had your Veniards tying wax do that? Have you been able to get the bits to reincorporate? Does it matter, do you think? Mike
@DavieMcPhail3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, What has happened is that the wax has dried on the outside of your disc which causes it to go hard and brittle which happens over time with most waxes like this..What I would normally do is just cut or break it away and then I would soften and work it until it's back to a good piece..I would recommend keeping your wax in a small box or sealed bag so that it stops it from drying out.. All the very best Davie
@krallmi483 жыл бұрын
@@DavieMcPhail Ah, I see that. I'll work on fixing things tomorrow... and keep the bits in a good, sealed bag from now on. Thank you for that, Davie... it helps. Mike

Can't find a USA source for this wax. Any ideas of an American equivalent?
@krallmi487 жыл бұрын
I never found an American source either. Thought I'd found this was in Canada once, but that didn't work either. Over time I found a few UK tyers sources with low cost shipping and that is how I came into a life time supply of Veniard's prepared fly tyers wax... along with a few other items not available in America. Yay Davie... thank you very much! I've tried making my own tiers wax from this link... flyanglersonline.com/flytying/tyingtips/part139.php It didn't work. I couldn't get the rosin to melt (small tin can in pot of boiling water). I figure the failure came from our high altitude (6100 ft.) boiling temperature of water... 201 F. At near sea level I think it will work fine. And a person could try a microwave. We don't have one. Lastly, olive oil can be substituted for castor oil if it turns out to be difficult to find. Mike
