In this video I remove two tree stumps from my garden using a mattock and leverage. This is the technique I've been using for years and has the advantages that it leaves almost nothing in the ground and can work without the need for machinery for even medium sized trees. The most important thing is to leave enough trunk for leverage when cutting down a tree.
The previous video where I pruned the trees can be found here: • First Major Pruning Wo...

Good luck, it's a lot of hard work removing stumps, but if you can get enough leverage it will make the job much easier.

(USED FOR LARGE FIG TREE STUMP, MAYBE OTHER APPLICATIONS) Tip for those living in the South with rock hard, cement-like, clay. Keep the stump well watered after adding a liberal amount of Dawn dish detergent (got the idea from the new soil aeration techniques using liquid surfactants instead of core aerating machines) for a few days or more depending on soil conditions. The Dawn/water "moat" makes the stump loosen, stump will start to move and will actually slip out like a greased pig after minimal rocking back/forth. We had given up and were ready to hire a stump grinder before I got this idea. I am still amazed at the results!!!

Thanks, yes you need a certain degree of strength and balance for this technique, but one way is to use a nearby larger tree (attaching to its base) and use a ratchet strap or winch attaching high up on the stump you want to remove to get more leverage you don't need a huge amount of force. The only downside is sometime the trunk can be weaker than the roots and will snap leaving the roots intact, also you have to be careful that when it breaks it doesn't fly across the yard and hit you or a window.

Great video mate. What happens to old chopped off roots that lie in the ground? Do they eventually turn to compost under the soil?

Yes, as long as you remove the large surface roots so the soil is deep enough for the grass to properly establish.

Great video! I wish that I had searched for this before I had cut back my lilac preparing to remove it. I cut all of the branches off and cut the multiple trunks down to about 1/2 metre tall. I tried about 6 years ago to dig out the roots with a spade and I broke the metal blade off below where it attached to the handle. My problem is that the lilac was planted in 1969 and now it had blackberry cane root all intertwined through the lilac roots. Any suggestions on how I can still remove it after my mistake other than hiring a backhoe to dig it out? Thanks for such an informative video.

I have a fig tree I want to remove and it has bushed out like your lilac tree. But mine is a little wider and has many more smaller branch/trunks. I am worried it won't be easy.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
Sounds like it will be a struggle, when they have lots of smaller stems they usually break, also fig trees tend to have big root systems. If you have a mattock it will make it much easier than using a spade. Good luck with its removal.

I’ve been trying this out for 2 hours and I’ve cut a lot of roots around the trees but it’s still solid as a rock. I must have roots going straight down. Do you think trying to burn it would be a good idea?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
Roots going straight down can make it a lot more difficult. If this happens I usually dig a two foot deep trench on one side of the stump and which exposes the roots so I can hack away at them from the side. You could try to burn the stump out, but if the wood is fresh or wet it will take a long time to fully burn it away.

Misleading title these are hardly "stumps". Leverage is the key, 2 meters of trunk to play with makes the job a simple DIY task, but its still hard work and any intact root of half-inch or even less makes it a struggle to pull it out.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 4 жыл бұрын
Leverage is very important, I don't know why so many people cut trees to the ground even when planning to remove the stump. The biggest fresh stump I removed using a mattock without leverage was around 80kg and over a foot across across, although I had to dig quiet the hole around it to cut all the roots. I find surprisingly sometimes a smaller stump can be much harder than a big one. For example I've taken out three foot wide conifer stumps which were starting to rot, fairly easily as the soft rotting wood was easily broken up by the mattock. Whereas a holly tree only around 20cm wide with roots going straight down was a real challenge as the tree had been growing slowly for 50 years and had extremely dense springy wood.

I often wonder who in the world gives thumb's down. I guess it's just trolls. So I tell my husband, when I get annoyed at someone who cuts me off on the highway or gives me a thumbs down, "Don't get upset, just feel sorry for the person, they're probably in a hurry to get their hemorrhoid prescription filled!" Then he just laughs (most of the time) lol. *Apologies to all who have that condition and don't cut people off on the road. P.S. Also, my husband says when things get to him, and he has or gives himself a hard time, he tells himself...a hundred years from now, it won't matter and that's IF he can remember the problem at ALL lol!
