For The Road Vlog Episode 6: How I Ruined My Alfa Romeo
This is the story of my first car, a 73 GTV that ended up as a shell. On FTR I'm going to rebuild the GTV alongside the 1300 Ti and Sprint GT from Episodes 1 and 2.

I was in my day, an Alfa nut. I had, I think, 8 of them in a row, from a '66 Sprint to a '85 33. I've wanted, for years now, to get hold a a project car, but marriage, children, divorce, marriage again, another child and all that just made the time run away from me. All these videos bring back all the memories and knowledge I stored up. The parts you show and the problems with those lovely old cars are so totally familiar. You don't, by any chance, have a job for me Jethro, in the Cape Town area? I would love to dedicate the next 5 years till retirement (and beyond!) to working on Alfas!

Just going through and binging all your vids. I'm not a car person, but am loving this restoration and learning how the insides of engines are built through your disassembling videos. It's funny you mention it was your first love, would that be the origins of the manufacturer's name, "Alpha Romeo"? Like alpha being first and romeo being love?

Alfa is an acronym that translates to The Lombary Private Automobile Factory, and Romeo comes from the owner in the 1920s, Nicolai Romeo.

Would it be possible to show detail on how some work is done like how to shape body parts welded in and preventing distorting the body when welding. Also how to clean aluminium and other parts. I have just started on a 1974 1750 GTV stripping it down

Ryan, at 14:28 in the video I see your 2 round Alfa Shields that go on the sides of the car at the base of the rear windows. What are you going to do to these to make them look good again? I have these and all the paint is gone from them too.

Considering everything, I think that GTV is in pretty good shape. I have no idea how you keep all those parts and which cars they came from--and are going on--organized.

Everybody is switching from a 2000 dashboard to 1750 one. The common fate of most 2000 gtv is getting small stop lights an an interior from a 1750. Or they get killed to put the 2000 motor, gearbox and diff into a "Kantenhaube". For that reason I bought a 1971 2000 gtv in completly original condition with about 75.000 km on it in 1999. I had to restore it 2008 and then sadly had to sell it. These cars a drivers dream. They are much better than the spiders. I still have two original spica dampers from 1971, used but working. The prints on them are still there. This was probably my best car.

Zorn Gottes I’ve decided to keep this car looking very 2000 GTV. I’m definitely keeping the 2000 front grill, the long taillights, the bumpers and the 2000 badges. I’ll probably go for a very 70s color like metallic olive green. I’m not sure what I want to do with the dashboard. If I can find a nice 2000 dash then maybe I’ll use that.

@@JethroBronner original 2000 gtv are the rarest of the normal 105 coupes due their fate of being organ donors for other, older coupes and even Julias. Back then I bought mine because of its complete originality. It was the time when all the gts, imported from italy, were leaving the streets. If Yours was my car I would choose the color it had when it came from the factory. By the way, i know how trashy the original 2000 gtv dashboard is:-) But sometimes trashy is very very cool..

Nice video. A 1973 2000 Gtv should have hanging pedals, not floor mounted ones. At least this is certain for lhd ones. Does this not apply for the rhd Gtvs?
@JethroBronner
@JethroBronner 6 жыл бұрын
sotiris karlos thanks man. Yeah all RHD 105s have standing pedals. They have the master cylinders mounted under the car, on the chassis rail. Every single RHD 105 model is like this, coupes, spiders, Giulias, Berlinas.

I think it was the '73 GTV that had the Gold 4 Leaf Clover badge on the C pillar. Did your car have the standard badge or the gold badge? Hail damage is one of the first things to check for when buying a car from the Transvaal area.
@JethroBronner
@JethroBronner 4 жыл бұрын
This had the green Serpent C pillar badges. Only the 1600/1750 GTVs had the gold clover badges.

@@JethroBronner Mine was a 2.0L GTV and as best as I can remember it was a '73 with a Webasco sunroof. According to the Durban agent at the time the Gold Cloverleaf denoted a commemorative year. It's possible my information was incorrect, but it did come from the Italian car specialist.

that rust is nothing, the dors are amazingly good. here in italy those cars were eaten by rust, up to 20-25 years ago was quite common to see them on the road with huge holes. even worse than other cars of the time.the rear structure is quite weak on the gtv, i remember i have seen some with the boot section bendt down, probably because of overload in the boot and/or rust damage
@JethroBronner
@JethroBronner 5 жыл бұрын
enrico fumi Yeah I’m quite lucky with this car and my 1750. Both were very good in terms of rust. The boot floor on these cars is very think and not very strong structurally.

To make a long distance car out of a Alfa GTV 105 series is an optimistic idea. They always make a lot of wind noise and water is leaking into the car when it rains.
