I know you’re going to a different school than me but in your opinion would you say that biochem is more about memorization and learning concepts or solving problems? I have no idea what I’m in for. I did good in organic chemistry and microbiology but idk how to mentally prepare
@HaleySchultz
@HaleySchultz 3 жыл бұрын
It’s VERY conceptual in my opinion. You need to understand all of the processes frontwards and backwards and know what the result would be if anything was changed or inhibited. To me, that requires understanding rather than memorizing.

If you will be a biochemistry major then you start with some introductory concept classes and then begin upper level advanced biochemistry courses more in depth than the single course I took.

I'm at the mid point of this semester taking BioChem. My whole class didn't pass the midterm exam because the exam really sucked. I mean, the professor didn't teach us and the materials she gave us to focus on was not even on the exam. My class average went down. I really need to pass this course to graduate. The second half is going to start next week (we we're on Spring Break). We're starting with Carbohydrates, lipids....when we return. How can I turn this semester around after a horrible start?
@thegamingflutist482

I'm a high school student, but the best advice I can give you would be to find out what the topics are that you need to know and either read a textbook or watch KZfaq videos. Then, to help you remember the information, write it down. It will stick a lot better if you read/watch and write it. I'd suggest the Ameba sisters if you want to watch KZfaq videos. I used to hate watching them in middle school, but the help me understand and remember the things that I learn in my biology class. (It's an honors class, so the teacher gives a lot of material and very little time to memorize it. It's nice to have a quick video to help me remember things last minute.) You could also talk to other science professors and see if they are willing to help you. Good luck!
@johnguillen68

@@thegamingflutist482 Thank you very much for your advice. Sometimes it's frustrating because our professor just gives us assignments and doesn't teach us, so it's all up to us to try to retain the material when there is no direction. I watch those videos too and they are helpful. I also take notes. The crazy thing is that I can write a whole bunch of notes and in the end at the exam time, none of that will be on the exam. That's the frustrating part. I'll keep doing what I'm doing along with your suggestion and as long as I understand the topics I think I'll be ok. Thank you.

I was taking anatomy lab, a marketing class and a history/writing class. That was 12 credits which is full time at my college. I planned my schedule in advance so I’d be able to put a lot of time into biochem! And I was fortunate that I did not need to work while taking classes so I could put my time into academics & student orgs.

Does this class require a lot of math calculations or is it more organic chemistry and biology?
@HaleySchultz
@HaleySchultz 3 жыл бұрын
It’s been several years but I don’t remember much if any calculations. You need to understand chemistry numbering and be able to count molecules lost between stages of cycles but that’s about it.

Hello just want to ask. I don't have a good Foundation in chemistry 1 and 2. Do I have to really study those subjects in order to understand biochem?
@HaleySchultz

I think Organic Chemistry is more helpful than general chemistry. But they are helpful to understand certain chemical processes that you have to memorize. You will learn as you go! Good luck!

Thnx for this video How I precieved it is: u emphasised more on how to filter out the info so that u go though all of them and really get to know what's important I don't struggle with this what I struggle with is memorisation, do u have any tips for that? Meaning: let's say biochemistry, u have to memorise all the chemical reactions the reactants and the products and the enzymes too. And let's say u have to remember glyconeogenesis process and how fatty acids are created or broken down or how from glucose we go to energy and there's so many reactions and so many hard names u just have to memorise Is there a good way to do it? My tactic is to just listen the lecture, while taking notes on the PowerPoint presentation(we don't have the transcript like u did unfortunately but oh well) then I understand the steps for each reaction and the pieces of info we have to remember. And then i just have to go through it many times, hiding the reactants let's say using active recall and just trying to remember I was wondering is there any better tactic Or how often I shall expose to myself to those reactions or when(morning vs night) or how frequently We also have to memorise all 20 amino acids and their structure, its pieces of information like that we have to remember it's just there and u have to remember it there's not much else to it.. How do u approach this type of information to remember it that's kind of the bottom line of this question Thnx again for the vid
@HaleySchultz
@HaleySchultz 3 жыл бұрын
I used flashcards for memorizing the 20 amino acids! I would take similar ones and study those 3 over and over. Then 3 more. Refresh the first 3, then all 6 together. Slowly taking little chunks to memorize then test yourself with them all together. Repetition unfortunately but there must be other tactics out there if that’s not working for you. Good luck!

@@HaleySchultz hey ur reply answers my question so thank you so much I think our brains work really similarily because that's exactly what my strategy has been too Repetition... It just works... Maybe there some other way to learn things but i just wanted to get some feedback and u provided it so thank you! You make me feel better now as I know I'm not doing the wrong thing... I'll just go on with my repetition tactic and i should be just fine! Thanks again for your reply you really helped I felt releaf I'm really insecure about this exam but now i know I do everything that I can..
