How I Trained My Puppies / Chow Chow and Caucasian Shepherd Puppy Training
Puppy training and early socialization go hand in hand in making sure your puppy grows up confident, happy and well mannered.
I have a separate video about how we socialized our puppies.
This video is focused on how we trained them and the lessons we learned and applied from dog training coaches and dog behaviorists we consulted with.
My puppies went to puppy schools/classes and we have since been applying what we’ve learned and training them consistently to this day.
I’m not a professional dog trainer, just a nerdy dog mom trying to share what we’ve learned from training our Chow Chow and Caucasian Shepherd puppies (both very independent and stubborn breeds) in the hopes that you might find something useful to help you and your puppy manage this very important phase in your dog’s life.😊🐾♥️

Hi this video is a very informative, my brother got us chow-chow and shes 4 months old now, shes so lazy, moody and playful... i want to do home basics training for our chow-chow because sometimes when shes on the mood of playing shes very aggresive like she likes to bite us and sometime destroy our floormat or the toys that we gave her, can we still able train the basic commands on her? shes 4 months and turning 5 this april of 8 and shes our first chow-chow...

Hi! First, congratulations on your new chow chow puppy! I’m sure she’s a sweet addition to your family! She’s only 4 months so puppy biting is really a phase every puppy goes through. That’s how puppies explore things, through puppy biting.😊 you just have to train her and let her know that you don’t like it when she bites you. Puppies love to play so when she starts biting, try saying “no” and leave her for a bit. Doing that a few times will help her realize that when she bites, you stop playing with her. Chows are very intelligent (though a bit stubborn) so she will get what you’re trying to teach her in no time. When she plays with you and does not bite, try giving her a treat and praising her. Positive reinforcement is always a good choice when training puppies. You can also try teaching her basic commands like sit, stay, come, etc. regularly, so she gets used to a schedule, because dogs like routines. Lazy, moody and playful are normal traits of a chow puppy and it might seem that you have your hands full now but a little patience and a lot of love can go a long way. If she starts nibbling on your things/furniture etc. try redirecting her attention to something else like chew toys that are puppy appropriate (for teething puppies, their gums can get itchy and painful too) or start teaching her something new or playing with her to distract her from destroying things. (It also helps to keep things out of her reach. If you can give her a timeout or quiet time inside a crate or a play pen, that can be helpful too.) My doggies used to play bite a lot when they were puppies but they outgrew that phase.😊 I hope this helps a bit and thank you so much for checking out our video! Hugs to your chow! 🐾

Hi Patty, your boys look so good! Was Melo nippy and bitey as a puppy? My 11 week chow Waffles is very bitey, and I'm wondering what you did with your boys.
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenny! Thank you so much! I try my best to keep them happy and healthy! And yes, Melo, like most pups at 11 weeks was very nippy/bitey too! Puppy biting is a common phase we all have to go through. Puppies use their mouths to explore everything around them. The good thing is, it’s a good opportunity to train Waffles this early to teach him what is okay and what’s not okay (in this case, the biting). While you’re playing with him and he starts biting, you let out a quick “no” or “ouch” and then leave/turn away from him (best if he’s in a play pen) and then come back after 10 secs, play again then repeat the process when he bites again. He will eventually get that when he bites, the playing stops. Puppies at 11 weeks are also teething and their gums get itchy and sore. I used to give Melo ice cubes/chips not just to keep him busy or cool but also to help soothe his gums. I also provided my puppies with a lot of chew toys appropriate for their age (I never gave my boys rawhides though, at any age). Toys are also good to help distract and redirect your puppy’s attention once he starts biting. Puppy biting, I learned, is just a phase and it will eventually go away as your puppy grows up. Your love and (tons of) patience will pay off soon, so don’t worry! It’s just his way of experiencing and communicating with you and everything around him. I hope this helps! Hugs to you and Waffles! Stay safe and healthy, always! 😊🐾

@@pattymostlikely Thank you so much for your response! I love all of your videos and hope you make more soon! I've also purchased neem spray to protect Waffles' coat when we go out, and have already gotten him used to having his paws wiped after every trip outdoors. I hope the consistency in training for bite inhibition starts to work. His little puppy teeth are so sharp!

Hello Karena! Thank you so much! Ours is a trusted responsible local breeder and they also import quality Caucasian Shepherds from Romania and Ukraine.🐾 You might be able to find a responsible breeder in your area though I know some people opt to go directly to/get in touch with legit kennels/breeders abroad like Canisa Iz Bolshoi Kavkaz among others. If you’re in the US you might also want to check out Caucasian Ovcharka Rescue Rehome USA (sadly, many are not familiar with the breed and get overwhelmed and give up on them 😢) and give a surrendered CO a second chance.♥️ I hope this helps! And thank you for checking out our little video/channel! Stay safe! 😊🐾

I have a 2.5 month old chow chow. He's fine when he's being petted through his pen. But when he's picked up for cuddles or sat down for gentle cuddles nothing rough.. starts to bite crazy. Did this happen with you?
@pattymostlikely
@pattymostlikely Жыл бұрын
Hello! At 2.5 months, your chow chow is still trying to navigate his environment and one way to explore it is with his mouth. Puppy biting is normal for his age and you can condition/train him off biting by saying ouch and putting him gently back in his pen every time he bites, turning your back on him and leaving him for a few seconds. That way (with constant repetition) he would soon get/understand that every time he bites, you won’t play with him or give him attention. Puppy play biting is a phase every puppy goes through. Melo is no exception. But with training, time and a lot of patience, he and I got through it. You can also try enrolling him in a puppy training program to get more tips and ideas on how to use positive reinforcement and more importantly, for socialization. I hope this helps! Hugs to your pup! 😊🐾

Hello! Thank you for checking out our video! As for your concerns, Chow Chows really do have a tendency to be stubborn, that’s why early training and conditioning and socialization are always recommended so you get to curb unwanted behaviors as they get older. The good news is, it’s never too late to train your chow although it might take a longer time for him to follow and completely get it, the later his training starts. But Chows are very smart, and I will never put it past them to get something you are training them to do, no matter their age. As long as you use positive reinforcement/rewards based training. Dogs love routines so it is best to be really patient, plan a daily routine and wait for your doggie to get what you want him to do. Repetition and rewards based training work really well for Chow Chows. If he is food driven, then you should always have his favorite treats handy. You can reward with a treat or a praise even the littlest progress. It helps to take it a step at a time so he doesn’t get overwhelmed. You might want to start training him to focus on you. Teaching him how to look at you (holding a treat up to your face so he’d look at your eyes) is always a good start in focus training. When you say “look at me” and he looks at you even for just a second, you must immediately reward it until he gets the idea. It won’t be long till you’re able to get him to stare at you until you give him a treat. Potty training is tricky and should always be done as early as you can. Taking him out to potty on schedule, day in and day out, especially very young puppies. (We never punish potty accidents indoors, but we make sure to quickly praise every time he goes to potty on the designated potty area) Dogs love to sniff their surroundings before doing their business and they do like to take their sweet time, so patience is really key. (I also say “go potty hurry up” a couple of times, the second I let my dogs out to potty, so they know that that’s what they have to do and I used to reward them with treats when they do, back when they were puppies, now I just praise them with “good boy/s”) You can always try to use potty drops or sprays to put on spots where you want your doggie to go potty or pee. Pee pads can also come in handy, to avoid a big mess indoors should you forget or miss to take him out to potty on schedule. “Come/Come Here” (say the command while holding out your open palm, urging him to touch your palm with his nose, giving him the treat the moment he comes close to touch your palm with his nose), this should also be taught early and treats coupled with a lot of patience and repetition, really work when teaching this command. You might also want to switch your long leash to a regular leash, at least while you’re training him. A long leash would allow him to be far enough to lose focus on you and what you’re asking him to do. I hope this helps and I wish you and your Chow the best! Stay safe and healthy always!
