I can relate to the drinking so much. When I turned 31 in September, I wanted to change my life, so I quit everything! Smoking cigarettes/weed, drinking alcohol, porn. It was tough at the beginning, but now I'm 4 months in, and I feel fantastic! Of course I miss the old days where I drank with friends and had tons of fun, but now that I'm always sober, it's different, but I grew to like it. You have your weekends, especially the Saturday! You get up early, be productive, and feel rested, not hungover! If you have the idea of quitting something, remember that it will be hard, but stay with it, grow your will-power to resist the urge to do the activity, it will empower you!

Thats awesome! Keep going. You'll definitely gain a lot of positive things for sure!..I turned my life around and havent drank for 2 years now. Stopped smoking 9 years ago too. NOW im changing my eating habits. I decided this week I would try more vegetarian home cooked meals. So far its day 6 and I just realised all my meals have been vegan lol So far so good hehe I just need to keep trying out different recipes hence why I found Simnetts channel. I loved his vegan sauces on one of his videos. But seriously, I'm a foodie and I LOVE big flavours mainly spicy Asian cuisines like Vietnamese, Thai and Cambodian food! Absolutely love the asian flavours and food but now I have to adjust and see how I can make vegan asian inspired meals and still feel some sort of satisfaction lol Anyway. All the best on your journey! You've got this!

for me i quit alcohol cold turkey for a few months and felt like a whole different person after only 2 weeks. i wasnt tired all the time, i wasnt groggy anymore, i could wake up at 6 am without issue to take my dog for a 1h walk before work. these few changes made it so worth while for me that i actually wanted to not drink at all during 2022, but in the end i drank maybe 4/5 times, which is an amazing improvement for me, considering my old drinking habits. but i got to admit, the morning after drinking i just asked myself the same question each time "and what was the point of that?". i no longer see any point in drinking, and thats one of the best things that happened to me in 2022. not much for some, a lot for me as 2022 was a shitty year in general, but hopefully this year will be better. happy new year everyone! thanks for the vid!!

You guys did so well recognising this problem so young. Took me until my mid 50's to realise the harm of daily alcohol use and the associated health issues (mental and physical) it created. Specific and measurable goals are really important to maintain focus. These daily goals really help me to get through the day without drinking and to ensure I partake in positive habits such as meditation, sports, healthy diet etc. I can tell you that a lot of my friends in my age group, 55-65, drink way too much, all are functioning and productive people but silently I would say dependent on alcohol. That daily bottle of wine becomes a crutch that is extremely difficult to live without, but it really can change things for the better, when you remove drinking from your life. Never too late to start..

Alcohol is maybe the only drug that when you tell people you *don't* use it, they assume you've got a problem. "I don't do cocaine" - Oh, that's good! "I don't shoot heroin" - Oh, happy to hear that! "I don't take meth" - Why would you?? "I don't drink" - Oh, I'm sorry - do you have a problem with it? 🤦‍♀ Thanks for the video Derek, you inspire a lot of people

Thanks for saying what you said about moderation not always working. I've had lots of problems bingeing food in the past. I've finally got it under control, but I have to eat whole foods plant based all the time. If I stray from that even once, I fall back into old habits. I'm constantly getting lectured by friends and family that I'm being to extreme and that I need moderation. I need to treat myself every now and again. They just don't get that it doesn't work that way for everyone. It's nice to hear that someone else feels the same way. Happy New Year!!

Great vid bro thanks for sharing. I’ve been sober 8 years and vegan seven years. Never been healthier or happier. Same for me- when I was drinking I thought it would be the end of the world if I stopped. “The party was over” In my mind. I couldn’t see a way out. Boy was I wrong. I had help through a 12 step program which led me to meditation and Buddhist teachings. I now go to gym 5 days a week, yoga twice a week, hikes, bike rides, jumped out of a plane, surfing, can’t stop reading books. A life I have now I couldn’t have ever imagined. Anyone out there feeling the same, another life is possible. Reach out, you’re not alone. 🙏🏼

The beginning of the pandemic really was the rock bottom of my relationship with alcohol. It took me until the beginning of 2021 to face my demons that drove me to drink. When I finally stopped drinking, my anxiety and depression lifted and I could see myself again.

Derek, Great story, thanks for sharing. I quit drinking, it will be 33 years ago in March. I was depressed, flabby and 32 years old. I started working out that first day, fortunately with a hugely buff and oh so patient Marine bodybuilder buddy. My energy and attitude changed and continues to do so. I'm currently 65, 8% body fat. I cycle daily, workout in an extravagantly fantasy gym and practice my yoga daily. Derek, many years after I quit I had a stroke, leftover from a head injury, I'd been hit by ANOTHER drunk driver. The yoga brought me back, those teachers and the practice saved my life. Addiction? Hell, cycling, gym and my daily asanas. Oh, well, a couple of lattes. I don't miss the booze. And btw, my peers from those long ago years are either dead or they look as if they died. BRAVO TO YOU and ALL YOUR FOLLOWERS! THANK YOU, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

1 year and 22 days here. At 37 this is the proudest achievement of my life. The last year hasn't always been easy, I've moved om from old friends, struggled with sugar addiction (which I'm starting to think most of my cravings for alcohol were actually sugar), I've had an ADHD diagnosis, but I wouldn't change it for the world. Conversely, I've stepped out of my comfort zone, been to gigs sober, been on solo holidays, met up with a bunch of strangers and gone wild swimming, went to a deep house night on my own (which was a truly beautiful experience sober).

Sugar addiction is a bigger problem than most people realise. It’s probably as bad as alcohol. You have to ween yourself off it and basically avoid any from of refined sugar (honey, agave, sugar granules, etc). Get sweetness from whole fruits and monkfruit if you really need something sickly sweet.

,,being content with just being" - that sentence really struck a chord for me. Even years after quitting my bad habits and turning my life around I still feel like I struggle to be present and simply enjoy life as it is. I feel like over the years I've turned from being a lazy video game addict to the other extreme, focused only on becoming the best at whatever I do - anything that isn't ,,productive" feels like a waste of time. I feel like sometimes I'm just constantly building for a tomorrow that never comes, working towards an illusionary goal, while life is passing by.

Quit drinking almost 5 years ago, put it down and haven't had a drop since. Quitting made my life so much richer, not even talking about my bank account! Then I year later I went whole food plant based and my body got so happy with me! One day I just put on my sneakers, left the house and started walking every day. My relationships are better, my life is so much easier - the hard things are still hard, but instead of hiding from life in a glass and a burger, I'm experiencing life and it is so worth it! I quit drugs in 1974, drinking in 1975, and smoking a few years later (tougher to quit). Began hanging with other people on the same path. I don't miss any of it one bit, my life is now fully in my control. The ONLY reason to do those things is because you want to, any other argument holds zero water if you're honest with yourself. Recent medical research clearly shows that zero tolerance is the way to go. Great video, Derek, we need more of these to show people that many are making the switch.

Thank you for sharing your story! I think the only other thing I would add to your suggestions is to not feel like you need to go full-tilt-boogie on making changes. If you want to go vegan, eat whole foods only, drink more water, etc., start with one thing and dial that in. I think a lot of people (me included!) want to do it all and that can easily lead to feeling overwhelmed and then they end up throwing in the towel on the whole shebang. For today? Drink more water (or whatever). We have to be kind to ourselves. We didn't get our bad habits all in one day. Why should we feel we can reverse them in a day? Thanks, as always, for your inspiration, Derek! Big love!

Wow Derek, I am proud of you. I too share the same relationship with alcohol and made the same decision to quit drinking 13 years ago. This was a major life changer. My mistake is I kept smoking pot and indulging on sugar (in the form of ice cream). I have since quit Pot and ice cream 🎉 and I couldn’t be happier. For those wanting to quit drinking be aware that alcohol is loaded with sugar. When you quit drinking it is easy to allow yourself to keep the addiction going by indulging in sugar. I found that I would look forward to indulging in ice cream at the end of a hard day. I have since quit that awful habit of switching habits(from drinking to ice cream). Also, people like us that have addiction issues should quit all drugs. I continually allowed pot to take over the place of drinking. It got so bad that it was beginning to ruin my life but I would not let it go. Although I quit nicotine 25 years ago and quit drinking 13 years ago, pot became the new problem. I had quit smoking pot for two years and felt great (so great that I began smoking again ) and then life hit hard with my Dad dying from Cancer. I used my pot addiction to mask over the reality of losing my father. This year I finally had a moment of clarity and connected the dots that all these negative habits had to change. I quit ice cream, quit pot, started getting up at 5am everyday and eating healthy/exercising regularly and my life has changed 1000% better!!! Derek, my wife turned me on to your channel and I am so inspired by you !! Thank you for all you do to help us live a better lifestyle

My son also doesn't drink, he doesn't like it, our diet is wfpb so he's not your usual 23 year old, I always say it's good to be different and if people like you they will except you whatever you are. Trust me as a mum who has done all the partying and had a problem with drink, giving it up 3 years ago was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I used to be an alcoholic, but luckily I'm sober now. During the therapy I realized I used alcohol to avoid my trauma and emotional pain and also to be more confident. I had a low self esteem and drinking "helped" me to talk to women, dance and be loud. Gabor Mate said: it's not about addiction it's what you get from it - psychologically and emotionally. I learned that it's not about what you do but why you do it. The intention. If you do something to distract yourself from your emotions then even the most noble thing can become toxic. If you go to the gym, eat healthy, work, pray, meditate to avoid yourself and what's coming to surface then you will feel like shit and fall into a trap "I'm doing right things, why I don't feel good?". Are you running away FROM something or are you heading TO something? Thank you Derek for being an inspiration, your videos are important and help me to live better life. You are great, one love :D

Very interesting story. I never expected that this was part of your past. At the age of 17, I was in a minor accident while drinking. Luckily, nobody was hurt. But it was a wakeup call. Later my allergist discovered that I was allergic to alcohol. Did you know that most alcoholics are allergic to alcohol? Lucky that I quit when I did. My life could have been so much worse.

Much love brother! I quit drinking 8 years ago at the age of 22. I was at the lowest point of my life. I somehow by gods grace started getting into yoga and meditation, and I slowly started to stop my bad habits. 8 Years later, every day is my highest blessing and Im extremely grateful. I gave up drinking in 2021, and I can’t recommend it enough. I don’t miss it at all. As I got older feelings of shame and anxiety crept in when drinking no matter what I was doing. Ditching that has been such a game changer. Alcohol free beer and wine is so good I honestly haven’t missed it at all. Thanks for the blog! All the best for 2023!

I grew up in a family where my mother and older half-brother were both alcoholics. It killed my mom at 60 and it made my relationship with my brother non-existent. I haven't seen or talked to him in over 25 years even though he is sober. He just couldn't handle the embarrassment of his actions while drunk and thought that I felt the same, which I didn't. Addiction is devastating to the struggling person AND the family unit. Cheers to you for finding that out early on in life. Thank you for this video!

This is so inspiring! I've been alcohol-free for 7 months now, and it's been absolutely amazing. Never going back! If anyone is interested in changing their relationship with alcohol, I would highly recommend Annie Grace's work. She talks about how alcohol addiction happens because the alcohol itself is an addictive drug/substance. Addiction to alcohol is a natural progression, just like becoming addicted to cocaine with repeated use is a natural progression. It's been a game changer for me.

It's funny how information can find you when you need to hear it. Over 4 years sober (from alcohol), I started drinking again recently thinking I was missing some part of life, and that I could control it. Anyone who has struggled with alcohol knows that this is a fallacy. Not alone, definitely better off not drinking. Thankfully I have good outlets and hobbies to take away the need / want. For anyone struggling out there, waking up Saturday morning feeling fresh is one of my favorite feelings. I also suggest taking yourself out of the environments that trigger you.

wow, this was me too! alcohol was my best friend. i was a daily drinker for years.. red wine was my bff. Everything I did had to be accompanied by booze to have fun. then, it stopped working.I was chasing that euphoria only to get a 15 minute buzz then the depression would set in big time.. it also arrested my development I see that now. I stopped drinking and I'm a year sober as of this Christmas day! If you are struggling and thinking that life will never be fun or you will never stop craving alcohol and that it's too hard.. please, believe me it gets so much better than if you stayed in your addiction. I promise that it will be the best thing you will do for yourself and future. One day it will occur to that you hadn't thought of alcohol all day or all week or all month. If i can do it you can do it... Trust me. thanks for this video. So great to share your past with us Derick. This I'm sure will help someone out there struggling 🙏🙏🙏

As someone who is clean from alcohol and drugs for about a decade, it is well worth it. However, there are still issues that come up and can cause you to spiral. Bad habits can come in many forms even after the alcohol is gone. Just keep making as many good decisions as you can and make sure you focus on yourself. Our physical and mental health should be our top priority.

When I gave up smoking in 2014 I felt as if a switch had been switched off, I felt jittery for a few weeks, but it never crossed my mind to go near a lit cigarette again. Sadly, I had used nicotine as an appetite suppressant. Whenever I felt I needed to loose weight I smoked more. So here I am overweight and having stared obesity in the face, but never quite going there. There is no switch this time, because I want to keep eating. And I want to be able to enjoy the occasional fatty, sugary treat. Took me ages to figure out that mindfulness was the way to go. For all those who want to get rid of drugs or alcohol I hope you find that switch! And you will never find out where it is. If you fail, it only means that success is further in the future. Best of luck!

Ive been doing well avoiding the reefer, it's the living with a roommate who drinks every single day that's only adding to my on again/off again relationship with alcohol. I'm definitely not drinking hard liquor anymore or even drinking daily, but I'm just realizing I need to let it go all the way. 🤔🤷🏾‍♀️🙄 I'm so glad I came across his channel on a day like today and your comment resonated with me as well.
